THE best film I’ve seen in years, tied with Poor Things for sheer originality. I argued with a friend that Sinners is not a horror movie; it’s a musical fantasy with jump scares and blood. But mostly, from my old white Southern woman perspective, it’s a story about colonization and the theft of cultural identity. Remmick the head vampire was an Irish pagan before the Christian colonizers came and forced religion on his people, while stealing their land; piano-player Slim talks to Sammy about religion being forced on enslaved people, and how their music is the holy thing that allows them to sometimes be free. The Choctaw Indians who are chasing Remmick have also lost their land to colonizers, and have had to fight to this day to hang onto some semblance of their language and culture. (Real-life members of the Louisiana Choctaw tribe appeared in the film.) In the end, Sammy must choose between the blues (and its association with sinning) and his father’s religion, which is in reality a white religion (everyone in the church is wearing white.) Sammy chooses the blues, the magic, and an independent life of his own design. The dance montage is so fucking perfect. And I love that Sammy’s Chicago club is named Pearline’s, after the woman who shared “the best day of my life.”

2025-10-02 23:20:14 +0000 UTCwhatever happened around 1:59:25 didn't seem right...they had no reason to back off after Annie was killed... that's one of the only inconsistencies i really noticed...along with the ammo count. Great film though. covered a lot of the vampire tropes.
