Behavioral therapy does exist, but there are different modalities. Cognitive behavioral therapy for example operates under the assumption that feelings, thoughts, and behaviors are all reciprocal in their impact on one another. To your point Dr. Melfi seems to be taking a more psychodynamic approach which I guess would be more "talking" as opposed to CBT. CBT is usually shorter, and includes treatment options for negative behaviors. Therapy must be backed by empirical research, and often has beneficial results.
