I'm sure someone has made these points:
1. Dune takes place 20k years in the future. The year 10, 000 is AG or after guild
2. The Spacing Guild was formed 1-2000 years after the BUTLERIAN JIHAD. Humanity's war against AI thinking machines, that had enslaved them. The war scorched the Earth, and humans spread in every direction. Arakkis had been found. Humanity had learned how to fold space for space travel. But before the guild, 10-20% of ships just disappeared. The Guild Navigators live in tanks full of spice, and are transformed by it. Mutated. But they are the only beings that can provide 100% safe interstellar travel.
3. No computers or thinking machines, because of the previous enslavement. That's why mentats exist. The human thinking machines with the line tattooed on their bottom lip.(Guy with the parasol in Dune 1)
4. All the scenes on Geidi Prime(the black and white planet), were shot on infrared lenses
5. Dune is not a hero's journey, rather a cautionary tale.

I loved it when it came out but I hadn't read the books. I piss people off all of the time by saying I prefer the 80s score. But I do. Toto nailed the 80s epic sound. Zimmer is great but I don't think this is his best work. I prefer a lot of his other scores over this one.

She threw out a line that I don't think is enough to explain. She now has the memory of every female ancestor. In Dune lore, memory and past ancestors memory is encoded in every human being but it takes the water of life to unleash the genetic memory. So yeah Jessica is different now. she has an insane number of memories and skills now that she didn't have the day before. Don't think about the logistics. That is what happens when you drink magic juice. Which has killed every man who has ever attempted to drink it. The whole Bene Gesserit breeding program was to try and create a man who could survive drinking the water of life.

Annnd we're done! Took me 2 view's to get through it though. (Had ta work) Honestly , a much better film than I expected. I was beautiful , and had amazing VFX. And the reaction was killer as I expected. When you get caught up in a film , just makes it even better Sir. Just a few things then on to Chernobyl. The Baron reminded me alot of Brando in Apocalypse Now. ( lol) , I did get some Blue Rasberry Kool-Aid to mix w/ Rum for the Film's Beverage, and the "talking baby" just freaks me out. : ] Ok , time ta get onto the next! Peace

Another Denis Villeneuve. One of my favorite directors out right now, you have checked out and liked all the films of his you've seen, and you'll probably like the others you haven't.
An atomic blast can be the result of a fast projectile hitting the shields, which is why hand to hand fighting became the norm. You don't want a nuke going off when you shoot someone point blank.
As far as the lack of computers and advanced technology, thousands of years before the time of this story there was a galactic war against AI and so "thinking machines" aka computers became pretty much illegal. This was called the Butlerian Jihad.
The baron is just so fat that he can't easily move, so the thing on his back is part of his "hover" tech he uses to float. The black liquid is just like some type of spa thing for him. Don't judge.
Also she can infact talk to the baby, she also came into contact with the worm juice and thus affected her mental powers while still in the womb.
The black and white scenes in the Harkonen home world were actually filmed using infrared cinematography which is why it looks so unnatural, fits with the theme.
He didnt want to go south because of his visions, but not because of Zandaya, it was more because he saw the death and suffering that him gaining power would lead to. but in the end he realizes that its the only way.
Zendaya is mad because he became exactly what she didnt want. You could say shes antifa and hes showing signs of facism. That's part of the theme of the books, how misguided power and religion can corrupt.

2025-01-28 13:55:08 +0000 UTC
I don't know how you figured he wouldn't go south because of Chiani. He was a afraid of going south because he has a recurring vision of billions of people across the galaxy dying in a holy war or starving to death. In the same vision where he sees his mother leading him.
Both Paul and Chiani know the prophecy is a lie planted by the Bene Gesserit, which is why she isn't happy that Paul is taking advantage of it and the people of Arakkis.

Finally someone who agrees with me about Star Wars! π€£ It just doesn't have much to *say* as Science Fiction goes, which is all about holding a mirror up to society and us as human beings.
What makes Dune different from other 'chosen one' stories is that it isn't about a destined hero there to save the day. It's a cautionary tale about charismatic leaders. The prophecies were planted by the Bene Gesserit, Paul is the result of their breeding program, and while he has compassion for the Fremen, his motives are ultimately self-preservation and revenge.
The 80s movie is a trip, but it's fantastic in its own right and fleshes out other aspects of the story. Same for the HBO show which focuses more on parts of the world building like the history between the great houses, the leading factions, and the situation with the technology that are left out of the movies.
As for the art, personally the design for the Imperial family makes my eyes hurt. The desert settings look great, but the art direction for the noble families that are supposed to be ruling the universe is too understated for the culture it's trying to convey. These people have been using their wealth and power to intimidate each other for millennia.

The Dune movie from the 80s is kinda hilarious. It's got some good actors in it, Patrick Stewart. But it tries to tell the story of these two movies in 2 hours, it's very rushed. And at times unintentionally funnyπ

There is a TV series set in this universe, recently aired with Mark Strong. Its set many many years before the films and it centers around the Great Houses/The formation of the Bene Gesserit and the end of the AI Wars/Butlerian Jihad (Crussade against thinking machines)

Yeah, I think it was a good choice for this adaptation to have her be more aware of that, because it's something that people often miss about Dune. Given how the story progresses, I'm glad they gave her more awareness of what she's getting herself into. It also adds to the tragedy of her love for Paul while hating what he made himself into.

Iβm so glad you love the series. There is also a prequel tv series currently airing, and if you are craving more of the series, definitely read the books, there are 6 in the main chronology and the first 2 movies only cover the first book. The books are wild.

Zendaya was mad cause she knows the prophecy isn't real. It's a form of subjugation over the Fremen. She knows that Paul will sacrifice her people for his vengeance.

MrLBoyd, to help you understand the use of 'older technology' like swords etc.
The shield will stop fast moving objects, like bullets, hence why then swords are used for fighting.
Lazguns, the firearms they use, will cause a cataclysmic reaction and kill both the shield user and shooter, so lazguns aren't used in situations where shields are employed.
That's why the fremen didn't use their heavy lazguns against the harvesters until the shielded ornithopter was taken out by a projectile weapon.
Also why the Harkonnen commander at the beginning, says no shields when they're ambushed.
Also, this is more like 18000 years in the future, from memory.
The year they give, the number started from the end of 'the butlerian jihad', which was a battle against 'thinking machines' or AI.
Computers, complex machines or any machine that thinks like humans is prohitbited, hence why they rely on humans as they have to complete any and all tasks.

They can't use them on people, it's against their nuclear conventions. So he uses them on the shield wall/mountains to allow the worms to enter. Also to prove that he has them at his disposal for when he makes threats with them.
