There are a lot of Great White Sharks in Cape Town, South Africa and so one of the main beaches has shark spotters & flags to tell you if there've been sharks. It's so much more chilled than this, but I can tell you that when the warning sirens go off every single surfer manages to catch a wave and every swimmer becomes Michael Phelps.
A boat then comes in and guides the shark away from the shore, and everyone goes back in. At the other breach where there's no vantage point to see the sharks, a boat checks the area and a net is walked out every day from the beach. Permanent shark nets can trap the sharks inside the nets and/or kill other animals (which also attracts the sharks).
As a matter of random interest, the great whites in the Cape of SA are all being killed by a pair of orcas called Port and Starboard. They surgically remove the sharks' livers. It's shaken up the ecosystem.

The largest white shark ever recorded was 21 feet roughly slightly smaller than one in Jaws...This will really blow your mind in 2023 they tagged a healthy 19 foot male great white. They lost contact with it than in April the same the tag tagged washed up on the beach...The recording that it dove down deep than recorded a elevated temp increase before the signal was lost...They think it was ate by something that was way bigger than 19 ft

The USS Indianapolis was a Portland class heavy cruise around midnight on July 30th two torpedoes slammed into her hull. 900 sailors went into the ocean only about 300 were rescued...Because of their orders of stricked radio silence no one even new she was a missing it was only by luck that a patrol the survivors...The captain was brought up with court martial with charges of neglect because he was not evading submarines by zigzagging. In fact the captain of the Japanese sub testified at the court martial and said it would not have mattered if they were they they were unescorted we would have sunk them either way... In fact they had spotted her on Aug 26th but decided not to attack her ironically that choice may have altered the out come of the war...

I feel like we've got to cure you of this hate for old movies you've got going. 😂 Lawrence of Arabia is a great candidate. It's the movie that inspired modern filmmakers like Spielberg and Villeneuve, and is still considered the greatest movie of all time by many. Also it has an intermission, so you can watch it in two parts.

That mom had a point. She didn't know the mayor was the one who convinced the chief not to close the beach, but he's still responsible for public safety and he should have stuck to his guns. Her son died because of his negligence. And he then tried to do the exact same thing and pretend the shark was caught!
You can't just pass the bucket of responsibility on when you know something's not right.

“Amity Island” is a fictional location that Spielberg set somewhere in New England. It’s not set in NY… Thus, the accents.

It wasn't idiocy, it was 1.100 men becoming 365. And if he didn't push the engine and the shark caught-up it'd basically be... well... that.

No it doesn't make him the Captain. The Captain is whoever is in-charge of the boat, who has authority over it and it's crew. Whoever steers the boat is the Pilot or Helmsman.

It's a common misconception that boats float because water is outside the boat and not inside the boat. Boats float because they displace (push-away) water equal to a mass that is more than the mass of the boat itself. A little water getting in is fine, if the holes are small and the pumps are working you can still maintain the mass of the boat to where it's less than the mass of the water your hull is pushing away. Too much water comes in, that mass adds-up and puts you over the limit and Glub-Glub-Glub.

The Indianapolis sinking and the fate of it's crew is a pretty famous piece of nautical history and prior to Jaws was the poster-child for 'this is why you should fear sharks'. The story Had to be told to give us why Quint is so emotionally invested *Specifically* in shark-hunting (at the time I don't think sharks were a very profitable fishery), and it HAD to go that long in order to draw-out the tension.
PBY, a Catalina flying-boat. One of the mainstays of maritime aviation especially in the Pacific during that period. Surplus ones became real popular on the civilian market, so popular I think there's a start-up somewhere trying to develop and market a modernized version for the civil aerospace market.
Fun fact, they had such problems with the shark prop that Spielberg re-worked the screenplay to substitute appearances of the barrel for appearances of the shark-fin to elevate tension and to foreshadow, "Shark's here guys, Shark's gonna do somethin'."
Keep in mind, this is not an action movie, it's a 'Suspense-Thriller'.

I dunno how common that is today, but it makes sense. That shark was NOT supposed to be able to pull that barrel underwater. The shark is supposed to fight the buoyancy of the barrel until it tires out and starts moving to the surface where they can get gaff-hooks and big harpoons into it. That it can do that is supposed to be one of the indicators that this is not an ordinary shark.

Back then they weren't all that persnickety about filming locations. Most people were more enthused about going out to see a picture than nit-picking about whether the set-piece actually was where they claimed it was.
But I hear you, I'm still peeved as an Oklahoman about the first episode of Star Trek: Enterprise called 'Broken Bow' claiming to have started in Broken Bow Oklahoma and it all being flat corn acreage instead of hills, pine-logging and chicken-farms.

'Rubbers' in this context could mean two things.
1) The type of high-traction rubber-boots commonly used onboard working boats, especially those that work in typically rough seas like the north Atlantic.
2) Prophylactics.
Judging from Quint's laughter I'm guessing he meant the one literally and the second figuratively.

"Farewell and Adieu, you fair Spanish Ladies." variations on that song go all the way back to the British Royal Navy in the 1600's. Quint is singing it here as a diss to Hooper indicating he thinks poorly of his survival prospects at-sea. (Keeping in mind, 1970's, shark cages and using them to get in the water with real Great White sharks was 'New and Exciting' at the time.)

Broncos, maybe, depending on the era. But generally small-town police/sherrif's departments serving mostly rural areas far from big cities will typically have some form of 4x4. Bronco, Blazer, Jeep, 4WD pickups etc... making up the most significant part of their vehicle fleets. Today it's mostly big SUVs like Suburbans and Expeditions.

Jaws 2 is the only sequel that is decent. Isn't as good as the first one, but isn't as bad as the rest. Jaws 2 does have Sheriff Brody back. But Spielberg did not direct it. So maybe watch Jaws 2, but don't go any further.

And , we're done. (Only with the movie. I still need about 30 more min and done with the Lego Set) I had a BLAST watchin this one Sir. You really had a great time w/it. (I will forgive your comments about Quint , as he's my fave. LOL) I did get all done on the Set but a bit of the base plates. : ] I do recomend the book for any readers out there. Also , this movie did more harm to peoples perception of sharks than anything else. As Psycho gave fears of showers , so Jaws gave fear of sharks and ocean swimming. Thanks so much for this reaction Sir! Well done. Peace

The shark scene with the shark cage was shot by Valerie Taylor, yes that was real shark footage. She spent her life studying sharks in Australia and is now a driving force behind shark conservation and the conservation of their habitat. She demonized sharks until she saw a worldwide decimation of every shark species after the release of Jaws.
BTW...this was the best reaction to Jaws that I've seen.
MrLBoyd, you are very good at forecasting the direction a movie is going. This one had you guessing the whole time, and you felt uneasy. 😅

Even if your not a Lego fan , but are a Jaws fan , the set is killer!! Ok , checklist time.. Edibles eaten - Check - Cones packed , Check - Beer freezer cold - check , Smokes and Zippo - Check , AND Brody , Hooper , and Quint Lego Mini Figures standing on the display stand , a big ol Check! What a classic. The shark’s name is Bruce and it was an animatronic you can find videos/pictures on the internet of the way it functioned. And yes there is a few JAWS sequels but honestly you’re right, there’s no point. None of them come even close to this one.

The reason it was shot so well: directed by Steven Spielberg. This film pretty much was the first "hollywood summer blockbuster".
The sequels are not wort it. The shark turns into a slasher villain to the point that it even starts stalking people and following them to different countries to seek revenge, lol.

That was a real meteor caught on film in the scene where the chief got his revolver. That's why no one addressed it. They didn't even notice it till the editing of the film, but of course, they had to use that take.
