Great film! Glad you liked it.

Mamalhama

Its a movie not a documentary on Roman history. I was entertained with the film and don't have the same cynical viewpoint as others.

SmooothE 🇺🇸🇺🇸

One of my favorite movies of all time. Great commentary and reaction as always!

I DONT CONSENT TO MONTHLY CHARGES

They say Marcus Aurelius was too kind hearted and better leader than Gaius Julius Caesar Vipsanianus, but that is not truth. Aurelius 1st and Julius were same level about brutality....enough is enough...but like in this movie Marcus Aurelius son was total nutjob and real life he WAS! Cannot stress this enough

VitaminPete616

Hes son was total psycho like Nero or Caligula

VitaminPete616

Marcus Aurelius was a good man on hes time, but hes son was something Roman empire never watch with honor

VitaminPete616

Aurelius did not have that, Julius Caesar was war expert!

VitaminPete616

If you like looking at fun things on Google Earth the sets are currently back up and visible on Google Earth for filming of Gladiator II. Just search Fort Ricasoli in Malta. This location was also used in Troy and as the gates of Kings Landing in season one of Game of Thrones.

Wes

And Quintus would have definitely known it. I always assumed he was the one who sent the men that killed his family from the "your family will join you in the afterlife" or he was the one who told Commodus. Either way he knew that the men were sent.

Twiska Brand

I saw this for thd first time recently and was honestly just disappointed. Possibly the most overrated movie of all time.

Teth

One of my favorite spectacles of a film. APOCALYPTO is the only movie that comes near. Movies that have me in awe.

SLEEPY_KING

Hello ... great reaction. Just an observation for future watchers, Mr L Boyd, the movie audio is way louder then your voice.

Nícolas Tosatti

This movie was as big as they get when it came out.

Nick Kessler

Definitely one of my all time favorites!

Bray

Yeah. This movie is in my top ten.....

Alejandro Guerra

Love this one. Been a long time since Ive seen it. Great reaction and for keeping it together at the end. The death of truth and honor and the hope of the end not being the end. I get teary at ends like these.

Kami

Love this genre of movies. After watching this I think it would be really dope to see you react to the show "Spartacus" in future. I thoroughly enjoyed this just as much as your reaction to the movie "300" that you did which was also epic aswell.

itsRichErich

Usually killing your master would be problematic, even if you could overcome him and his guards. You would most likely be hunted down, even some of the more successful slave rebellions ended badly for the slaves.

gak9319

The location of Maximus' home would be a matter of record.

gak9319

A large part of the Roman empire was conquered even before it was an empire😅 Nevermind under the rule of Marcus Aurelius. He was however the last great emperor of the golden age of Rome. There were many great leaders after him, but with every generation after Aurelius the empire weakened bit by bit.

gak9319

Love this movie, but it is full of historical inaccuracies😅

gak9319

He did SPR before he started releasing things on Patreon, you'll find it on YouTube🙂

Yes, leaving maggots in the wound will actually help it. They eat the dead flesh/bacteria but the not the healthy flesh.

...continue. Ancient Greek society was built on valuing strength of mind, they went to see plays and the recitation and debate of philosophy. Ancient Roman society was built on valuing strength of might, they went to see people kill each other. Germania was important because Rome's economy was built exclusively on property and it's division, distribution, acquisition and inheritance. Romans had little concept of and even less respect for the economic contributions of artisans turning raw material into useful items or for merchants trading those items so they ended-up where they were most needed. To a Roman, Rome's fortunes could only increase so long as the Empire increased and if it ever stopped growing it would be a catastrophe. Sound familiar? The tales told of the old Colosseum at it's height are wild. They built it so they could actually flood the arena and hold mock naval battles in it. Very cunning of Lucilla, advise him to punish The Legion and he'll make an enemy of the military... something you NEVER want as an autocrat. Gladiators Were the rock stars of their time, not only the 'studding' sessions but also... the gladiators 'bathed' by rubbing themselves in olive oil and scraping it off with a curved piece of bronze, saving the 'result' in clay pots which were then sold as perfume to rich ladies. Yes, your wife too could enjoy 'Eau de Maximus'. That way to greet the crowd was Roman long before it was used by fans of the funny mustache man, in fact they stole it specifically from Rome because 'Rrrr, WESTERN Civilization!' Fun fact, originally the thumbs up was the sign to kill and the thumbs down was the sign for mercy... Thumbs up was good, give the crowd what they want; but now everybody assumes it meant good for the fallen gladiator so that's how it's depicted in modern interpretations of those stories.

Damn.. Hands down in my Top 10 Fave Reactions Sir! Epic film , epic reaction. If you look online , you can find a few other deleted scenes and more. The special features on the physical media are very interesting. Ridley Scott is sorta known for big epic films. From Alien and Blade Runner , to Black Hawk Down , American Gangster , and a few other damn good ones. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us. Peace

Madmanmarz1981

2:45:03 * Commodus yelling "Am I not merciful!?" Mr. LB " This man is a Supervillian ! " Had to pause from laughter for a few there Sir. Also , Film Fact - The yelling of the line was an ad-lib and the reaction from the actress was real.

Madmanmarz1981

Also, have we done Saving Private Ryan yet??

Mike MIchelsen

This is one of the all time greats. The end makes me cry every fucking time. Dune is epic like this... Cannot wait.

Mike MIchelsen

You're almost right about the slaves. Juba was a hunter. Barbarian guy was a... uh... Barbarian. They weren't conditioned, they just weren't stupid. Slavery was purely an economic class in Rome. The lowest. You are property. You have no rights under Roman Law. But there is a (low) chance that you can win your freedom, or buy it. Sure Maximus could've killed Proximo, but he literally couldn't have gotten away. Hunted. Crucified.

Mike MIchelsen

Let's go! Fun fact, Roman Legionnaire's full kit included picks and shovels as well as weapons. When marching on-campaign in new territory they would stop well before nightfall and dig-in making a small fort for the soldiers to camp in overnight. Maximus was a General, and a Roman Citizen (Citizenship in the Roman Empire wasn't a notation of where you were from or where you resided, it was an indication of political status, Maximus having never set foot within Rome before means nothing to his citizenship) where his home and family were would've been a matter of public record. 'Just leave the maggots in'. Yes, in fact I'd expect they were deliberately placed there. Using maggots to debride wounds is an ancient and highly effective practice since the maggots will only ever eat dead flesh and putrification and won't touch healthy flesh. It's even used today in modern hospitals when people come in with wounds that were left untreated for any any amount of time prior. Two things... one, most of those slaves were likely slaves before being bought by Proximo so they've been conditioned to accept servitude even if it means death. Overcoming such conditioning is something you can be glib over but it's not actually any small thing. Two, snapping a grown man's neck is not nearly as easy as they make it in the movies. It requires not only significant strength but also technique. Okay, three things. Three, for every one of them that may have thought of that, there's no telling how many would jump you if you made a move just on the hope of winning favor with the new master. Of course he 'cares' about ethics, this is the Roman Empire and slave-holding is a time-honored tradition. ;P to be continued...

This came out when I was in college. We had a $1.50 theatre in my town that played this for a month - I saw it 18 times.

Scott Asher

First time seeing the Extended Edition. Beyond giving some larger context to the politics of Rome, and the motivations of the Roman Senators, I don't think it added much. Like most cases where a "Director's Cut" exists, the Theatrical version is the superior film, imo...

Carl Lyngholm

Hmm, it's 12 a.m... but I only have one day of work left, so let's go.

Rabbit S

Hot Damn!!!! So glad to see this pop up! I do so love a great period film , especially one with action and gore. This film is a prime example of what an epic film should be. It's not quite perfect , but damn close IMO. Also glad your doing the extended cut. (Always do extended/unrated versions.: ]) I can't wait ta see how long it takes you to call Commodus trash or some such thing , lol. (But Joaquin NAILS the part. He's so much fun to hate in this.) Film Fact - Sir Oliver Reed (Proximo) died of a heart attack during a break from filming , so they had to use a body double and CGI for his death. Checklist time - Edibles kickin in , Check - Cones packed , Check - Smokes and Zippo , Check - Beer freezer cold , Check. And with that done... "Me , who is super high , salute you!" Peace

Madmanmarz1981

I don't normally like to play this card cause it's been beat to death, but the very idea of making a sequel to this film is straight-up repugnant to me. Like, does War & Peace need a sequel? Macbeth? Antigone? LEAVE. SHIT. ALONE. Hollywood is a creatively bankrupt cesspool of tepid ideologue schlock and artless, design-by-committe, fourth-rate goofies throwing good money after bad... Sorry, that was a lot. Love Gladiator, though. Gladiator 2 can only denigrate it's legacy.

Jake Martin

the best fun fact of this movie is that they wanted to make Rome as real as possible and when they showed the original cut to test groups, they HATED it and said it was unbelievable... the part that they couldn't believe? They created billboards with the gladiators on them because they were used in marketing and would endorse products.

This movie is a masterpiece

Royal Williams

i don't want to spoil anything, but Thor Love and Thunder, touches on similar concepts , i think you are doing the marvel movies at a reasonable rate but i just had to note that

ArabianPrince

I haven't seen this movie in ages. Cool.

Brandon Tracy-Hurst

It's funny you're doing this movie now.... the lead actor, Russe Crow was supposed to play wolverine, and was already cast, when he decided to leave the project to do this movie. I think it worked out well for both actors lol

Shawn Leaf

No way! I was literally searching your Collections looking to see of you've reacted to this when I got the notification! One of my favorite movies!

Scott Asher

ooo extended version

Liam

Just starting to watch this now. Glad you're watching this classic masterpiece. Also, shame on you, you uncultured swine. "Is this animated" as im typing this out... shame on you. New studio sounds great. Happy Friday, have a good weekend and as usual, positive wishes from the UK

Chris Robson
