God I love this movie. Overlong and flawed though it it is. I'll take Bill the Butcher, as the best villain any day. And THE method actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, stayed in character the entire time they were filming. Did all his own knife throwing, and butchering. And apparently smelled like old blood, and perfume for months. Can you image having that scary fuck be next to you at the urinal?? The day they wrapped, he immediately went to wash and cut off all his long greasy hair. Speaking of DDL, Last of the Mohicans is also a blast.

2024-02-02 06:05:34 +0000 UTCYou know the part where he taps the tip of the knife against his fake eye? Apparently DDL actually put in a contact, and though it was thick and painful, taught himself to tap it without blinking, over the course of a month/

2024-02-02 05:58:59 +0000 UTCFruit trees, ripe crop, company town. And all the gold is in a bank in the middle of beverly hills... in somebody else's name. There's never been a paradise in California, or anywhere else. That's just the line those with power give to those without power to tempt them into becoming more exploitable.

2024-01-31 22:59:46 +0000 UTCBTW, the would ghoul started to rise into common use in american english around the 1850s. It's plausible that even having a good vocabulary, Bill might not have been familiar with this word, specially since it's from Arabic origins. You also point out the ridiculousness of them praying to god to help them in violence against other men. It's really not that ridiculous, it is one of mankind's oldest traditions dating back to the birth of religion itself. There are very few gods in which this isnt the case.

2024-01-31 21:13:41 +0000 UTCYou missed the "Directed by Martin Scorsese" credit there right at the end, again. lol. This movie has a few "impossible shots" that are actually possible and done in camera. You know Scorsese loves his "split diopter" shots. Basically this lens is split down the middle with two separate focal planes.

2024-01-31 19:50:29 +0000 UTCWhatever has happened in California in recent years, it was once a true paradise for people seeking an escape from the mean streets of East Coast cities. Green hills, mild climate, fruit trees and clear skies. We hadn’t broken California yet and it was a garden.

2024-01-31 18:29:19 +0000 UTCAnd the Twin Towers are part of that skyline in the final scene. More carnage was to come.

2024-01-31 18:26:05 +0000 UTCI’d be thrilled if you’d follow this up with the current Scorsese masterpiece, now on Apple TV, Killers of the Flower Moon.

2024-01-31 04:35:24 +0000 UTCEerie seeing the twin towers there at the end. More blood and tribulation. Endless.

2024-01-30 23:28:48 +0000 UTCSir, because of you I now obsessively notice teal-and-orange in movies. Please explain why it’s so popular?

2024-01-30 22:59:03 +0000 UTCThe Old Testament is all about tribal warfare. Heinous acts, from the rape of enslaved women to the murder of the enemy’s male babies, is Biblical. Is there a monotheistic religion that doesn’t use its scripture to justify murder?

2024-01-30 22:48:40 +0000 UTCExcept in the movies, no means no.

2024-01-30 21:54:45 +0000 UTCI don’t think a prostitute in a slum in the 1860s was in that line of work because she liked having lots and lots of customers. She was there because she was out of choices.

2024-01-30 21:21:26 +0000 UTCMr L, yes it’s a perfect movie for the time we’re in. And its bookend is Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese and a much older DiCaprio telling another American story that isn’t in our history books.

2024-01-30 20:13:28 +0000 UTCScorsese is someone whose work I didn’t appreciate when I was younger. He’s a master.

2024-01-30 19:53:37 +0000 UTCThe final scene is beautiful and sad at the same time. The city rising in the background. While what used to be disappears and is mostly forgotten.

2024-01-30 08:50:08 +0000 UTCgreat movie! love Daniel Day-Lewis in this one. I think, aside from religious views (personally i think someone's faith is a silly thing to kill for), it always comes down to "the other" the invader from afar that's taking your wealth and jobs and livelihood and whatever other rhetoric gets pedaled. Either way, whichever gangs controlled the five points controlled the political power in the region. Therefore, because of groups feeling the need to assert their ideals, the gangs fought. Makes sense, just not logical sense lol.

2024-01-30 07:51:34 +0000 UTCYour conclusion that you can't care about either side... I think that was the actual point. Both sides treating these events, the scheming, the power-plays, all with the utmost gravitas as these are the highest of stakes possible. This is how they see the world, this IS their world, and they are the biggest players in it. ...and in the end, their stories don't end with an epic showdown of epicness... they end with the bigger fish coming in and sweeping them all into the ash-bin of history without ever having known who they were.

2024-01-30 06:14:55 +0000 UTCSince humans have prayed to gods, they've prayed for the death of their enemies. Those who have or will pray to the Christian concept of 'God' are no different, singing 'Onward Christian Soldiers' to the man/myth who preached the turning of the other cheek... and seeing no hypocrisy in it.

2024-01-30 06:14:17 +0000 UTC1000 percent agree with your take. Exactly my point.

2024-01-30 05:34:37 +0000 UTC"San Fran Sis Co." This wouldn't be the first time the siren song of California lured people in desperate straights to head west. Watch/Read 'The Grapes of Wrath' for another... Also, the way you make money in a Gold Rush isn't by mining for gold, it's by selling shovels and pick-axes to the miners.

2024-01-30 05:20:14 +0000 UTCThe monologue Bill gives while wrapped in the American flag, describing his reverence for Priest Vallon to Vallon's son, unbeknownst to Bill... telling Amsterdam what it meant for him to kill the only adversary he's had that's worth remembering...it's fucking intoxicating. Daniel Day Lewis is an example of an actor who is NOT overrated. He deserves every drop of praise.
