2024-01-15 09:02:44 +0000 UTCYou picked up so many details that I’ve missed even though I’ve rewatched Memento several times since seeing the theatrical release. Example, the changes in Teddy’s tag number. The kind of disconcerting mismatch that most viewers are maybe subconsciously picking up without it quite clicking. And a way for Nolan to remind us that we’re experiencing Leonard’s story through Leonard’s manufactured memories. What we “know” about anything including whether that’s an I or a 1, we know only from what Leonard wrote down before he had the tattoo done. So easy to switch a letter for a number. Thats crazy-focused filmmaking. Creating more than one license tag for the same character, just to mess with our heads. 👍

Well, technically the middle of the story is when the B&W fades to color, but either way its very clever the way the Nolan bros wrote this. The first scene we see is the end of the story, and the second scene we see (the first in b&w) is the beginning. Then, so that we call feel just as crazy as Lenny does, we are confusingly led through past, present, and future until they ultimate meet in the middle at the end of the film. Definitely a classic movie, some people have even edited the film in chronological order lol. BTW there's a great behind the scenes breakdown and discussion where Nolan himself breakdown the concept and how they wrote it, its available on YouTube

2024-01-13 05:52:44 +0000 UTCChristopher Nolan said the reason he told the story in reverse was because it forced the viewer into the same perspective as the protagonist. Every scene you enter, you don’t know how you got there. You have to just try to figure it out like he does.
