2023-10-01 02:43:26 +0000 UTCMr Lloyd, this might be a good time to note that the extended versions in this trilogy are less painstakingly edited than the original versions. You might notice some minor but annoying continuity issues, for example, that we didn’t see in the theatrical release. And a few scenes are added to the extended version that were wisely left out of the originals, like the rather silly exchange you noted with Pippin and Merry after the trees flood Saruman’s tower. The only reason I’m bringing this up before you watch the third and final film (my personal favorite) is that the extended version is going to contain a couple of minor scenes that might seem not to match the timeline. They don’t distract from the story, but might have you wondering how much time has passed. (Continuity problem.) Return of the King deserved its many Oscars including Best Motion Picture, at least in part because the theatrical version didn’t suffer from any editing or continuity errors such as you might notice in the extended.
