So glad I finally got the time to watch this. An absolute masterpiece. A movie that really hits a moral question. Now when u say this I'm not talking about Dahmers and Bundys and sickos that simply went out and killed for no reason. I'm talking about someone who robbed a store and it went wrong and they killed someone. Or got in a fight and killed someone. Situations like that where their primary motive wasn't to kill but it ended up happening as a result of their actions. If they did this pre age 25 as a young stupid kid, stay in prison into their 60s or so and are actually a completely different person at that point and of no danger to anyone, should they be allowed to re enter society (Like Red). I ponder this often and can still see both sides of the argument. As far as the accents I think maybe it was just too hard to find enough good actors with Maine accents lol. With the extras I always thought they kept switching most of them to represent how often people come and go and this movie does time jump a lot. Nonetheless, excellent reaction bro.

The biggest cinematic travesty of all time is that Shawshank and Pulp Fiction lost best picture to Forest Gump in 1995

I DONT CONSENT TO MONTHLY CHARGES

Also, aren't federal prisons full of people from all over? Like, rearely you go to the same one in your state resulting in different accents??

Matt Rumsey

If you notice at 57:45 the corridor carries on round the end edge of the wall after andy's cell explaining where brooks went with his cart!

I'm super late Boyd, but the word "penitentiary" is derived from "penitence," and you can blame the quakers for that. The idea was that if you put someone in solitary confinement, the only person they could talk to would be God. Hence the warden.

Nick Chevalier

I loved this one, Mr LByod. Much appreciated πŸ™

Damn near a perfect movie

At the end of the movie he removes his prison attire and we see the suit underneath. When he goes through the wall we see the big plastic bag attached to his ankle. I think the suit, change of clothes and the shiny shoes are in said plastic bag because the bag looks black inside that would mean the jacket is wrapped around everything. Which means if the bag does get wet inside at least the jacket is ruined and not the more important shirt and pants. Great reaction! Love this movie :D.

Larry is great. when he first started his channel I listened to him tell his whole life story. Fascinating stuff.

Your Marilyn Monroe/Dumb down speech made me think of the song "Dumb it Down" by Lupe Fiasco, please react if you never heard it before. Your analysis of that songs lyrics would be incredible.

Ashley

You are the only patreon subscription I have because of what you said on your Marilyn Monroe talking point. I love you and your channel because I never watch a single video of yours without being intellectually or morally challenged based on your criticisms of the media being watched. I deal with enough passivity on a daily basis and look forward to disagreeing with your statements to be honest lol it exercises my mind and strengthens my own values in conjunction with becoming more accepting and understanding of others. I appreciate you.

Likewise sir!

The different extras could be easily explained by people leaving when their time was up. In a jail like that people are always coming and going. Not everyone is in for murder. a felony can range from 1 year to life. Now you were spot on about the accents which oddly enough I never even thought about that. Good catch.

I watch another creator on YT named Larry Lawton. He was America's biggest jewel thief, got caught, and ended up doing 12 years in prison, mostly in USP Atlanta. He tells a story about his first day after his release. He's on a Greyhound back home when they stop for lunch at a truckstop with a Subway inside. He waits in line, studies the menu, and when he gets to the register and the cashier asks him what he wants, Larry has a full-blown panic attack. He bails. Runs outside to get some air and catch his breath. He was completely overwhelmed with his newfound freedom, and the choices that came with it. Even deciding what sandwich to order was too much for him to bear after spending 12 years in prison. Brooks spent more than four times that long at Shawshank. It's un-fucking-imaginable.

The Rita Hayworth movie the inmates were watching is called 'Gilda'.

Braavosi

The movie wasn't a big hit when it came out because it was a Stephen King short story and it wasn't horror. So folks weren't interested. I was guilty of skipping it in the theaters even though I was an avid King reader. I finally watched it when it came out on DVD and I got it free from Columbia House. It is easily one of my favorite films and I've seen it at least 20 times. I guess I can add +1 because I just saw it again along with you.

TigerMyth

Happy to see this on my day off! Thanks for the reaction, going to watch it a bit later :). Have a great weekend, bud!

Divorce was much different back then. Very hard to get one. Reno had very easy quick divorces. And they didn't have one yet, she said she wanted one after being caught.

TigerMyth
