STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE FULL REACTION

Comments

George Lucas wrote the story, I have the original books. He started at the 4th episode because they came to the conclusion that having the first chapters released the movie would fail because it was mostly laying the foundations of the story and there would not be very much action so, they released IV, V and VI then went to 1 and onwards.

Maryanne Murphy

George Lucas loved WWII movies and wanted to replicate the pilots getting ready for a bombing run. So, he copied the things done in the WWII movies. For someone not thinking scientifically, it's awesome to see and build the energy of a pre-fight very well. However, to answer your question, they use a variety of power sources, including photon and electrical and ion. Depends on the object and purpose on what they use. (I, myself, prefer to have my character carry an ion blaster in any situation to knock out electronics in an area, including armored suites and droids. But that is during an Star Wars TTRPG game.)

I think the ships are powered by crystals. I’m not super into it or well versed in the lore, perhaps someone that is can elaborate on that

David Nettles

Dude , you can't look in sci fi and try and put Earth tech and compare with other technologies. It may not be electric. those guys could have been cooling the engines until lift off. they could have been un plugging the electric wires. The could be mixing water and milk for some new power source. Dont think that hard. NO LORE...It was all built from here. Sometimes they build backwards. Empire Strikes back will answer questions.

The scene where you commented on the special effects and how they did't look 70's tech , was because that scene wasn't in the original. It was added later . Lucas went back after he developed the technology and added some scenes . originally, this was just Star Wars. Lucas went on to develop the special effects we see today in many other movies.

When you were asking about, "What is the purpose of these robots, who are they to her(leia?), who are they to him (vader?)... I... I thought it was pretty obvious in-context. The opening crawl said the rebels (who Leia is obviously working for) found the plans to the Galactic Empire(who Vader is obviously working for)'s ultimate weapon. Vader was interested in 'The Plans' and was looking to search Leia's ship stem-to-stern to find and secure them. We see Leia slip something, obviously some kind of hard-media, into R2-D2 (the blue/white trashcan) under it's main optical lens. I don't know how you couldn't interpret that as her loading the plans onto the droid and then having the droid shoot it'sself out of the ship in the escape pod. Vader himself said, "They launched an escape pod and there were no life-signs aboard? Obviously they loaded the plans onto it somehow." I... I just... Help me out here, how was this not obvious? Do movies nowadays just not do foreshadowing like they did in 1977 anymore?

Just to point out, when Lucas was creating the Jedi Order and the mythology around 'The Force' he was inspired mostly by Buddhism and other Eastern religions primarily, respect and worship for wisdom and life in-general rather than any central deity.

The Expanse, Farscape, and Stargate is my holy trinity of TV Shows. Don't get me wrong, love all the others too like Star Trek, Firefly, etc. Though when it comes to full universes Star Wars is amazing. Especially love the Knights of the Old Republic games, The Clone Wars, Rebels, Mandalorian etc tv shows.

Matthew Langley

I love Garrack! I think I'd want Sisko if I were going into battle, Picard for exploration, and Janeway for away missions.

Jake Martin

Same bro, especially when she went all Ripley on those Macro Viruses. The episode "Counterpoint" really won me over. I adore Sisko and Picard too, of course. All for their own merits. Damn man, the writing for those 3 series is masterful. You're a classy dude, Mr. L. Boyd- always thought so.

Jake Martin

It's ok to feel as if you have missed something, after all, the title lets you know that this is Episode 4 of a much larger story. There's three trilogies in what they call the Skywalker Saga. Episodes 4, 5, 6 (The Original Trilogy) (1977-1983) Episodes 1, 2, 3 (The Prequel Trilogy) (1999-2005) Episodes 7, 8, 9 (The Sequel Trilogy) (2015-2019) + Rogue 1 (2016) I think specifically with Episode 4, what keeps people coming back to it and getting swept up is the classic Hero's Journey or the monomyth tropes that are the core of many stories since the beginning of time.

David Melo

Great reaction. This is the remastered version of the movie, so most of the modern looking CG scenes were done in the early 2000's I believe.

Billybob350

Ok so Yavin 4 is where the rebel base was located. It is a moon orbiting the planet Yavin. When they came out of hyper space they had to orbit around the planet to get the moon in their sight. The hyperspace lanes are very precise so that's as close as they could get. All the ships do require fuel and that is what those guys were doing. You are no different than anyone else watching this for the first time. There are still a great many questions to be answered and you will find out a lot in the next one, The Empire Strikes Back. You will be more invested after that one. Then when you watch the prequel trilogy you will have a great many answers. Star Wars requires a lot of patience.

Drewcliff82

The effects were just insane for the time. Other than 2001, nothing was remotely close to Star Wars. Logan's Run which came out a year later looked like a high school project in comparison and i loved Logan's Run. The popularity of Star Wars ( all of the promotional material and advertisements just called it Star Wars and not New Hope) launched a myriad of low budget rip-offs which made the effect all the more impressive.

TigerMyth

Bro you need to do the sequel called Train to Busan presents Peninsula.

D Montano

Sand People.... Droids are Slaves. and much more slavery to come.

Ashley

You should know that Star Wars trades in ethnic topes and racist stereotypes. I choose to believe that George Lucas used them with good intentions.

Ashley

Why the fuck didn't Chewie get a medal?

Ashley

lore in star wars is retro active. its meant to be mysterious. you learn more as you go. its been going for over 40 years now.

Ashley

The force aka The Jedi Order is a tangible religion. They don't follow a god per se they follow the force. I won't say more for now because spoilers.

Ashley

That man in the bar is a Ball Chinian for sure. Also George Lucas was a pioneer of composite shots and green screen. which made it possible for him to add in all the CGI in the late 90s when that technology came online. But the true genius of these movies is the puppets, miniatures and practical effects.

Ashley

HAN SHOT FIRST! In the original it's uber clear he got the drop on Greedo. That's why his(Greedo's) shot goes so wide, but Lucas recut the scene to try and make Solo less of an antihero.

Mike MIchelsen

love that movie will check that reaction out kind sir! look forward to seeing RRR one day

Billy

Awesome to see you reacting to Star Wars!

Stephen ODaniel

Ok I watched most of it and will have to finish up tomorrow. I love this one bc it's the first and without it we wouldn't have all the rest of Star Wars. The next 2 in this trilogy are much better. The comment about the accuracy of the storm troopers but then they miss everything, Luke not caring too much about his aunt amd uncle dying but being devastated about Obi-Won or them knowing they're being tracked and going to Yavin anyways lol. I get it but even then it's still such a great movie. You will like the next 2 a lot more and you will love the prequel trilogy. Okay here's the best way I can explain the force. It is a force that controls everything in existence. Some beings are "Force Sensitive" and have the power to manipulate the force. Not just anyone can do it. They are few and far between but they exist. The Jedi were a group of force Sensitive beings. The stronger the force user is the more they can do with it and the faster they can master it. You will learn more as you go but that's the basics.

Drewcliff82

This movie did look really good for its time; however, it is important to note that the CGI that you see in this version is actually a 2004 remaster of a 1997 remaster that was done to it.... In the original 1977 movie, Jabba was actually played by a human. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw1gkNd6Z_8

Alice Aria Allen

But but but... TNG. Picard has got to be the best cap. Altho i'll grant you that ds9 has the best character with Garrak. Incredible writing.

Hugobertram Wasenloge

Tons of lore but you're not missing anything a first time viewer would've had when this came out. The lore is filled out throughout the franchise. I have a feeling you will enjoy picking up on these things when they come up in future movies. For example: keep in mind when you asked about lore of the canyon from his home planet when he was talking about flying the x wing for the first time.

Brandon Tracy-Hurst

George never thought the movie would b a success so thr reason it's episode 4. After the success of this one he took every dollar he made from it and turned around and made the empire strikes back and then did the same thing with return of the jedi. So essentially episodes 5 amd 6 were independent films 20th century fox ony produced the first film george paid for everything himself for the next 2 movies. then after the original trilogy blew up like it did fans wanted more so we got the prequel trilogy which became episodes 1-3 later on. Everything that you see was completely new to everyone. after the original trilogy came out alot of fans weren't sure if there would b anymore star wars so alot of fan fiction novels were written and later approved by George Lucas which led to alot of the lore we know such as how certain star fighters ran what droids did which how the force is perceived and so on. It wasn't until George seen the reaction that the fans had and the technology to advance enough did he decide to to the prequel trilogy and then later the clone wars and rebels cartoons.

Convulsion Gaming

When there were knights, and they got into fights, using sabres of light.

Christopher Wichman

You got me super scared bro

Lenear Boyd

Sorry!!! (not sorry)

Lenear Boyd

I absolutely love DS9 and VOY. Captain Janeway is one of my absolute favorite characters.

Lenear Boyd

Lmao it was a joke 🤣 I apologize

Slimsycentaur37

It's on my list but I actually watched Train to Busan, which is a foreign movie

Lenear Boyd

I'm texting the editor so it can be treated with extra care. Thanks for the heads up

Lenear Boyd

Btw if Disney copyright strikes you it counts as 3

Slimsycentaur37

Star wars is happy meal Stargate just saying not trying to start a fight but no lies here

Slimsycentaur37

Mannnn i really wish this community could get you to react to RRR. First foreign movie on the channel I think and it would be a great one to go with

Billy

I was like you once, but with Star Trek. I'd seen all the big sci-fi tent-poles, but I never watched Star Trek cause I didn't think I'd be into it. NetFlix changed everything, bro. I binge watched every episode of TNG, DS9, VOY and loved them all so much that they became my go-to comfort TV shows.

Jake Martin

Goddammit, dude. I was, yet again, about to go to sleep.
