A Binate-Berry

The “berry-girl” sub-genre of expansion never quite grabbed me the same as it’s done for some. As a kid, I’d already had a thing for unusually big girls by the time I got exposed to the fetish-reactor core of Willy Wonka’s Violet Beauregard, so instead of awakening to a newfound fascination with blueberries and spheres, I just came away from it with a memorable example of “girl suddenly gets huge”...but the “berry” part of it wasn’t all that significant to me.

Still, the Venn diagram of Kink tends to look a lot like a piece of Spirograph art: there’s a lot of overlap going on between genres that might not strictly adhere to one or the other, but can strike a chord if you do it right...So when my friend Trydianth cautiously approached me with the opportunity to try my hand at a freestyle interpretation of “berry-girl” characters, I didn’t need too much of a push 😆

“J” here was already a pretty different kind of character than I’d drawn before, even aside from the blueberry element; a multi-limbed “binate” fusion of two individuals named Jade and Johnah. I think what sold me about them was their enthusiastic, explorative, and good-natured (if slightly hedonistic) personalities...A lot of BG art I had seen was often focused on helplessness, incapacitation, or unwanted growth and transformation that verged on—or went full into—a kind of body horror dynamic that wasn’t very appealing to me. Jade and Johnah seemed a lot more sanguine or even eager about such things, and I liked that about them.

And, to be honest, I felt the conventional “spherical berry-shape” was pretty...well, boring...Happily, Trydianth gave me free reign to mess around with shapes as I pleased, and with J already being a hodge-podge of limbs and funky proportions, I enjoyed the challenge.

This set was the first of what unexpectedly turned into a little universe of BG art and adventures involving Trydianth’s characters (and eventually my own Allie as well). There are a few mistakes and inconsistencies as I was still getting my head around J’s design, but it was a refreshingly fun and cartoony start 😅

I wouldn’t have guessed it myself if I just read the basic list of ingredients, but this pair turned out to be a lot of fun 😊

Personally, I don't like the whole conjoined thing (looks more like body horror to me than regular blueberry inflation) BUT this is done so well that I still kind of like it.

J is the first conjoined character(s) I particularly enjoy. Part of it is your art, part of it is their characterization, like you said, and another part is Try's joy and love of it all

This was such a personal on the fence personal thing to me and you’ve really hit it out of the ballpark when I was so timid about sharing it, afraid I would scare you off in some way. Apparently that happily was not the case! I’ve had gotten BG art of J before, but your take on them was such a refreshing departure from the norm of art that I was accustomed to from the genre that it really resonated strongly with me. Ah, for those that have a touch trouble trying to follow who’s who, Jade is on their left (short jade green hair with red streaks) and Johnah is on their right (long maroon hair with Jade green streaks) their hair swatch swapping was a by product of their merging.
