Al-'Ula - Saudi Arabia - Advent Day 20

Day 20!

When I was thinking about what to add into this haul of content for the Advent Calander, I though I’d reach out to some of my old clients to see if they would allow me to share some things.

This is one of those tracks, a small track in the Deserts of Saudi. AlUla is an ancient Arabic oasis city. And we built a race track in it! This track is kind of a ‘best of’ of the area, featuring all of the landmarks in a condensed space.

The most famous of which is probably the elephant rock, which the track wraps around his trunk in a large banked corner.

This is a fairly unusual track as it’s designed for quick hop on hop off sessions of a simulators so the layout is short, and simple, with lots of run-off areas. So why this track may not be for everyone, it is a bit of a blast from the past, and an interesting look at some of the work I have done outside of Patreon.

The starting Grid is 3 wide, which is fun. Ai and Replay cams all work. Night lighting too!

I have bought the track to life with some modern day features such as the night lights, and screens.

I did a bit more testing (kunos car, Huayra BC, 20 cars, day and night). Very little drop on most of the track (average 55/57fps, locked at 60 : all good), but could clearly feel the drop when several screens are in the FOV. It happens at mainly one point on the layout, where you have a clear view on most of the track for a few seconds, and a few others a bit too. Looks like it's not really one screen the problem, it's more of a bunch of them at the same time ^^ I tried altering the ext_config to remove the screens, without success. This track is a CPU monster with everything going on. It was built quickly for a specific purpose, and a few machines with great hardware. This won't be one I'm revisiting to be honest. Crest however will for sure be optimised. The screens add very little if any performance drop for me though. I can send you a build with the screens disabled if you like, just to check if it makes a difference?

Finally had time to try it out, and verdict : deleted. Not because it's bad or what, just wayyy too heavy on the CPU with the lights/screens/effects/etc. The newer Crest is close to unplayable too, because of the screens (and 99% of my other tracks are perfectly fine with 20+ ai). Don't forget the potatoes, please... :D
