1954 Australian Grand Prix.

Hey everyone,

Sorry it’s been a bit of a slow month in terms of content! I’ve finally got around to catching covid, and it hit me pretty hard. Lots of bed rest, and painkillers have set me on the mend though and I’m feeling a lot better now, still not quite 100%, but getting there.

The rest of this month I’ll be attempting to squash some bugs with existing tracks and doing some more managable updates, so there’ll be a few smaller update posts on the way, but for now, I have a whole new track for you!

It’s a bit of an obscure one, the 1954 Australian Grand Prix.

With no suitable permanent circuit available, a course was mapped out on roads in sparsely settled coastal land 2.5 km south west of Southport, and just to the north of later circuits, Surfers Paradise Raceway and the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit.

It’s a fascinating track, over 9km long, it’s super narrow, with a really thing bit of asphalt down the middle, bordered by a few meters of gravel either side. The track has been tweaked slightly to get it to work with Assetto, as things like the pitlane were different back in the day. However the layout is as close as I can get based on the available reference materials.

So just to re-iterate, this track is extremely narrow, by design. Overtaking in modern cars will be very difficult indeed. You might find racing older, narrower cars to be the best idea for this one.

The 2D spectators for this were kindly leant to me by Fat-Alfie

Thanks,
Tyrone
