Cyberpunk VR Room
Added 2020-09-30 10:20:10 +0000 UTCI've had a VR themed room in my list for a while and last time I did a room design, I saw someone posting a request for a Ready Player One inspired artwork. And I'm still hyped with Cyberpunk 2077 coming very soon, so I just enjoy making stuff like this right now.

Before I jumped into reference search, I needed to figure out some details. Am I going to make a treadmill style VR set? Or will this be more of a sci-fi direct neural connection? I've settled on more of a Matrix style seat capable of full immersion )

I just love anime drawing style like you see in a classics of Akira or Ghost in the Shell. There is just something about the bulkiness and boxy geometry with a lot of panels and bolts, that makes it pop. So in my search for a reference, I've saved some images, that had something similar in them, like you see on the first chair, or the room illustration.
For a moment, I started to explore more of a Deux Ex style environments, where the cold cyberpunk tech meets art deco and classic furniture. But I quickly realized, that it would be too much and that I need to focus on a particular one style to be able to deliver consistent feeling with the small scope of a single room.

I really wanted to include a plant behind a glass somewhere again, so I built my layout around that corner. I also wanted to have a door and a window, to be able to convey a style with architecture elements. The window is directly inspired by one of the images in the reference board, even though the pattern was slightly modified.
I also borrowed the sofa style, I really loved how boxy and futuristic it looks. After that it all came to the chair, I really wanted to include some screens and cables too, so it's all kind of a mashup of things I like.
After the sketch and layout was ready, it was time to move to Blender. As you can see below, I used a lot of bevel and boolean techniques to create that technical and anime feeling.

That was the Cyberpunk VR Room scene for you this week. Thanks for reading and I hope it will help you with your next work.
