The senator's suicide was based on a real senator's suicide. In reality, there were several factors. It wasn't just "oh no he can't do his job boo hoo poor straight guy." He was actively being threatened repeatedly by Republicans. McCarthy and his cronies went out of their way to put pressure on him and bring his son to trial for things that prosecutors wouldn't bother with normally. Even fellow Republicans at the time voiced concern over how overt the threats were against him and his son. On top of that, President Eisenhower was actively trying to bribe him not to run again because he wanted a Conservative in his place. Importantly, if he had resigned, the then-current Republican governor of Wyoming could have simply appointed a Republican to replace him. With his death, it had to go to a vote. In polls before his death, he was getting 55% of the vote and his closest opponent only had 19%. After his suicide, a Democrat was elected to replace him. As an aside, that Democrat was then instrumental in the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. ...I'm watching the show with you, so I hope that doesn't spoil anything I don't know is in future episodes lol.

I hated (and still hate) the name “skippy” cus it just sounds so patronizing and it irks me. But I will say they fill in all the gaps by the end and having knowledge of the full story made other things make more sense. I see Hawk and Marcus as mirror images of each other of how they chose to survive at the time. Hawk just had more power because this was the 50s. So I empathized with both Tim and Frankie the most. I will also say that Tim is 100% autistic and I will die on this hill. He is like exactly me and I love him so much. Except I would’ve dumped Hawk so fast lol.
