one of the reasons the 'communist threat' and the hunt for queer people were so intertwined back then is because people hated both so they used the excuse that queerness showed a blatant lack of morality or severely "weak morals", meaning they were more susceptible to being sucked into communism/becoming communists. people make the same moral argument today, just in a different way. same hate, different times unfortunately. ALSO you aren't alone, i was irritated with hawk for about 75% of the show xD (and no, this doesn't mean i think he's necessarily a bad person and i definitely don't think he's a bad character)

2024-01-30 00:40:07 +0000 UTCthe thing about the rooting out of 'communists' and queer people from government is that it all stemmed from an irrational fear of 'the enemy within'. the perceived threat of communism (which I could spend hours debunking, and also was just used as a tool to enforce far-right politics and demonise those on the left) and the perceived threat of queer people were things that right-wing politicians could scapegoat and use to persuade voters to elect them. it's a very interesting period in history mostly because you can see so much of it in modern day politics. McCarthyism is fucking disease.
