He wanted this role because when his sister was 16 she came out to him and he regrets how he responded to it, so he did this movie to try to "rewrite one of his mistakes". You can also see this in some of the scenes where he has a bowl of Skittles on his desk because when he played for the Seahawks he was notoriously known for eating Skittles.
