UCAW: Ch. 06
Added 2025-05-16 14:47:17 +0000 UTCThe pre-dawn sky was still dark when Takeo slipped from his quarters. Gastly floated silently behind him.
"Stay close," he whispered.
Last night's revelation of Renji's betrayal had accelerated his plans, but the new mission from the system was clear: he needed to create and distribute evacuation plans to loyal families. This would require delicacy, discretion, and perfect timing.
He activated Shadow Perception briefly. Two ANBU observers on the rooftops to the east, likely monitoring the compound's main entrance. He altered his course accordingly, keeping to the narrow alleys between buildings.
His destination was a small storage building near the edge of the compound, innocuous enough that it rarely received attention from either clan members or village surveillance. Inside, Hiro was already waiting.
"You're early," Takeo observed, closing the door behind him.
Hiro looked up from the scrolls spread across a low table. "Couldn't sleep. Not with everything that's happening."
Takeo knelt beside the table, examining what Hiro had prepared. Maps of the village and surrounding territories, schedules of guard rotations, and lists of clan members organized by family unit.
"How many can we trust completely?" Takeo asked, tapping the clan roster.
"43 families without question," Hiro replied. "Another 37 I'm reasonably confident in. The remaining 20..." He shook his head. "Too close to Yashiro or Tenma, or have expressed strong loyalty to Konoha above the clan."
Takeo nodded. "We begin with the most trusted. For this initial phase, let's target twelve families, those with the most vulnerable members and those most loyal to the clan's interests."
"And the others?"
"We prepare as if they'll come, but we don't inform them until the moment is right. I won't abandon them, but I won't risk the majority for those who might betray us."
Gastly circled the room, passing through walls occasionally to check for eavesdroppers. Each time it returned, it projected reassurance to Takeo.
"I've sketched out potential evacuation routes," Hiro said, unrolling a larger map. "The most obvious exits would be watched first if Danzō moves against us. These secondary paths are less direct but would draw less attention."
Takeo examined the routes, mentally comparing them to the ANBU patrol patterns he'd memorized. "These two are viable," he said, pointing to routes that cut through the less populated western and southern sections of the village. "The northern path runs too close to Root headquarters."
"We can't move everyone at once," Hiro noted. "Too obvious. And the civilians will need escorts."
"We'll need to organize them into groups," Takeo agreed. "No more than five families per group, staggered departures, with at least two combat-capable escorts per group."
They worked in focused silence for the next hour, outlining a detailed evacuation plan. By the time the first rays of sunlight filtered through the small window, they had a framework ready for implementation.
"I'll create individual scrolls for the initial families," Hiro said, gathering the papers.
"Good," Takeo nodded. "I'll handle the first distribution personally. Start with the families furthest from the center of the compound. They'll be watching my movements closely, but I have ways to avoid detection."
Hiro hesitated. "Takeo-sama, about Renji..."
"What about him?"
"If he was feeding information to Root, how can we be sure others aren't doing the same?"
Takeo considered this. "We can't be completely sure. But he is now a controlled variable. We know what information he's passing along, and to whom. Anyone else..." He shrugged. "That's why we're compartmentalizing. No one except you, me, and Takeshi has the full picture."
"And Fugaku-sama?"
"He knows enough," Takeo replied carefully. "But he's in a delicate position. The less detail he has about our methods, the more genuine his plausible deniability if questioned."
Hiro bowed slightly. "I understand."
As they prepared to leave separately, Takeo placed a hand on Hiro's shoulder. "Be careful today. Use civilian messengers where possible. Children running errands draw less attention than ninjas."
"And what will you be doing?"
Takeo's lips curved into a slight smile. "Creating a distraction, of course."
---
The Police Force headquarters buzzed with activity as Takeo arrived for his normal workday. He moved confidently through the corridors, greeting officers and reviewing reports with his usual efficiency.
To anyone watching, he appeared focused on routine matters.
Naori appeared at his office door shortly before noon. "Takeo-sama, a moment of your time?"
He gestured for her to enter and close the door. Once they were alone, she activated a minor sound-dampening jutsu.
"Tenma is meeting with his faction again tonight," she reported. "Seventeen members confirmed."
"Location?"
"The old training ground behind Yashiro's home. They're being careful, using civilian messengers rather than chakra-based communications."
Takeo nodded thoughtfully. "What's their agenda?"
"From what my sources indicate, they're planning to approach the Hokage directly. They believe if they present themselves as the 'loyal opposition' within the clan, they can secure protection and possibly favorable treatment."
"At the expense of the rest of us," Takeo said with a cold voice.
"Precisely." Naori hesitated before continuing. "There's something else. Yashiro visited Danzō yesterday."
This was unexpected. "You're certain?"
"Yes. One of my civilian informants saw him entering the 'official' Root headquarters. He was there for over an hour."
Takeo tapped his fingers on the desk, processing this information. If Yashiro was directly collaborating with Danzō, rather than just creating internal division...
"Did Renji know about this connection?"
"He claimed not to," Naori said. "Either he was lying, or Danzō is cultivating multiple sources within the clan."
"Or both," Takeo mused. "Keep watching them. I want to know everyone who attends tonight's meeting and everything they discuss."
"Of course, Takeo-sama."
"Naori, I have a special assignment for you. There are five families I need you to check on personally." He handed her a small scroll. "Assess their loyalty, discreetly, and their readiness to move on short notice. If you judge them trustworthy, give them these."
He produced five smaller scrolls from his desk drawer, each sealed with a simple cipher that only clan members would recognize.
"Evacuation plans," she realized, eyes widening slightly.
Takeo smiled. "Just in case tensions with the village escalate. Nothing more."
Naori tucked the scrolls into her vest. "I understand. I'll report back by sunset."
After she left, Gastly emerged from the shadow of a tall bookcase where it had been hiding.
"What do you think?" Takeo asked the Pokémon. "Is Yashiro working with Danzō directly, or just exploring options?"
Gastly floated closer, projecting impressions rather than words.
"You're right," Takeo nodded. "It doesn't matter. Either way, he's a threat to our plans."
Gastly made a low sound.
"No, we can't eliminate him. Not yet. Too many questions would be raised." Takeo leaned back in his chair. "But we can ensure he's occupied when the time comes."
---
Takeo made his way toward the clan's civilian quarter. Unlike the ninja sections where traditional architecture dominated, this area featured more modern housing, shops, and small businesses... the heart of the economic empire he had helped build over the years.
He had changed from his Police Force uniform into civilian clothing, deliberately understated. Gastly remained hidden, following at a distance.
His first stop was the small clinic run by Yūki, a talented medical-nin who had chosen to focus on healing rather than combat. Her skills had saved countless clan members over the years, making her both respected and well-connected among the civilian families.
The clinic was quiet when he entered, with only a single elderly patient dozing in the waiting area.
Yūki emerged from a back room, surprise registering on her face. "Takeo-sama, this is unexpected. Are you unwell?"
"I'm fine," he assured her with a small smile. "I was hoping for a private word, if you have a moment."
She led him to her office, a neat, sparse room with medical texts lining one wall and a desk covered with neatly organized patient files.
"What can I do for you?" she asked once the door was closed.
"I need your help with something delicate," Takeo began, carefully gauging her reaction.
Yūki's expression grew serious. "The auction? I've heard rumors it might be more than a simple business decision."
"The rumors are not entirely wrong," Takeo admitted. "The situation between our clan and the village is deteriorating. We're making preparations, just in case."
"Preparations for what, exactly?"
"For the possibility that we may need to leave Konoha. Quickly, and possibly under difficult circumstances."
To her credit, Yūki didn't react with shock or denial. Instead, she considered his words carefully before responding.
"The civilian families. They would be the most vulnerable during such an evacuation."
"Precisely," Takeo nodded. "I need someone they trust to help prepare them. Someone who can assess their medical needs, identify those who might require special assistance, and organize emergency supplies without causing panic."
"You want me to prepare them without telling them what I'm preparing them for," she stated.
"For now," Takeo confirmed. "Though as the auction approaches, we'll need to be more direct with those we trust completely."
Yūki was silent for a long moment. Finally, she looked back at Takeo. "I've watched the civilian families struggle under increasing restrictions. I've treated the wounds of our ninjas when they return from missions that should have been assigned to three-man teams, not individuals. I've seen the fear growing in our children's eyes... What do you need me to do?"
Takeo handed her a sealed scroll. "This contains instructions for seven families. Basic preparation guidelines, what to pack, what to be ready to leave behind. Can you distribute these personally?"
"Of course," she tucked the scroll into her coat. "I'll visit them as part of routine check-ups. No one will question a doctor making rounds."
"There's one more thing," Takeo added. "I need an accurate count of civilians who might need physical assistance during evacuation. The elderly, injured, pregnant women, young children."
"I can provide that by tomorrow morning," Yūki promised. "Though I'd like to know one thing, Takeo-sama."
"If I can answer, I will."
"Where would we go? If we had to leave? Our lives are here..."
"Somewhere we can rebuild," Takeo said with a slightly soft voice. "Somewhere our children won't grow up feared and isolated because of the eyes they were born with."
Yūki nodded slowly. "I hope it doesn't come to that. But if it does... the civilians will be ready."
As Takeo left the clinic, he felt a slight weight lift from his shoulders. Seven more families added to the preparations. Progress was being made, even if slower than he might have wished.
---
Time was passing quickly and it was already night. Takeo was in a rarely-used training area near the eastern edge of the compound.
He removed a scroll from his vest and unsealed it, revealing the Blade of the Ruined King.
"Perfect visibility, perfect deniability," he murmured to himself.
He began a series of training katas, drawing upon the Void abilities granted by his Nocturne enhancements. Black mist swirled around him as he moved.
As expected, within minutes of beginning his training, he sensed an ANBU observer settling into position on a nearby roof. Exactly as he wanted.
Let them watch.
Let them report back to Danzō about his strange new abilities, his connection to shadows and darkness.
Let them believe they were witnessing the physical manifestation of the Uchiha's darker ambitions.
The more focused they were on him and his supposed threat, the less attention they would pay to the quiet preparations happening throughout the compound.
He increased the intensity of his training, channeling more void energy into his movements. The black mist thickened, occasionally forming into ghostly blades that struck at imaginary opponents before dissolving again.
Gastly emerged from hiding to join the display, circling Takeo and adding its own ghostly techniques to the spectacle. Together, they created a performance designed to unnerve any observer.
After nearly an hour of this calculated display, he sensed a second ANBU joining the first.
Good.
Word was spreading.
He finished with a flourish, the blade cutting through a thick tendril of shadow mist and causing it to explode outward before dissipating entirely. Then, as if suddenly aware of being watched, he glanced sharply in the direction of the hidden observers, activating his Sharingan briefly before sheathing his weapon and walking calmly away.
---
Night had fallen completely by the time he made his way to Takeshi's home. The older Uchiha was waiting for him in a small garden behind the main house, a pot of tea steaming between them.
"Were you followed?" Takeshi asked without preamble.
"Of course," Takeo replied, accepting a cup of tea. "Two ANBU, probably reporting directly to Danzō. I lost them near the marketplace, doubled back through the civilian quarter, then used a shadow clone distraction for the final approach."
Takeshi said, sipping his tea, "Hiro reports that his team has distributed the first twelve scrolls. With Naori's five and Yūki's seven, that's almost half of our initial target."
"And their reactions?"
"No one has refused the instructions or reported to the authorities, as far as we can tell."
"Good," Takeo said. "We'll continue the process carefully. Any sign that Tenma's faction suspects what we're doing?"
"Nothing concrete, but they're growing more suspicious of any unusual activities within the clan. And there's something else. The magazine..."
"Has Renji reported back to Danzō as instructed?"
"Yes, but there's been an unexpected development. Word about the 'hidden techniques' has somehow spread beyond Root. I've received inquiries from three different clan heads about whether the magazine will indeed be part of the auction."
Takeo's eyebrows rose slightly. "Which clans?"
"Nara, Hyūga, and surprisingly, Sarutobi."
"The Hokage's clan?" This was an interesting development. "What exactly did they ask?"
"The Nara representative was subtle, merely inquiring about 'unique items of historical interest' in the auction. The Hyūga were more direct, specifically mentioning rumors of a foreign text with visual techniques. The Sarutobi messenger was the most interesting, he claimed the Hokage himself had expressed a personal interest in examining any items of 'cultural significance from beyond the Five Nations.'"
Takeo tapped his fingers against his cup thoughtfully. "This could work in our favor. The more interest in the magazine, the more attention focused on the auction itself rather than what it's concealing."
"Or it could bring unwanted scrutiny," Takeshi countered. "If the Hokage becomes personally involved..."
"Then we adjust accordingly," Takeo said firmly. "Confirm the magazine will be included, but be vague about its contents."
Gastly had been circling the garden during their conversation, occasionally projecting emotional impressions toward Takeo. Suddenly, it darted close, radiating urgency.
Takeo calmly said. "Someone's coming."
Moments later, a figure appeared at the garden entrance.
"My apologies for the interruption," Shisui said, stepping into the garden. "But there's news that couldn't wait."
"What's happened?" Takeo asked, gesturing for him to join them.
Shisui knelt beside the table, declining the offered tea with a small shake of his head. "Danzō called an emergency Council meeting this evening. I wasn't invited, but I have sources who were present."
"And?" Takeshi prompted when Shisui paused.
"He presented 'evidence' that the Uchiha are developing new weapons or techniques. Specifically, he described the new abilities of your strange blade, and abilities that manipulate shadows in ways unlike standard shadow techniques."
Takeo kept his expression neutral, though inwardly he felt a surge of satisfaction.
"What was the Council's response?"
"The Hokage was skeptical, pointed out that many clans develop specialized jutsu. But others were concerned, particularly when Danzō suggested these techniques might be derived from forbidden scrolls stolen during the founding era."
"A ridiculous accusation," Takeshi said with genuine indignation.
"But an effective one," Takeo noted. "What actions did they authorize?"
"That's just it," Shisui leaned forward slightly. "They didn't. The Hokage insisted on more concrete evidence before approving any action against the clan. He specifically mentioned waiting to see what emerges at the auction, whether the Uchiha are truly liquidating assets as claimed or if it's a facade."
This was unexpected. Takeo had anticipated Danzō securing at least preliminary approval for increased surveillance or restrictions.
"The Hokage is being surprisingly reasonable," he said, not bothering to hide his suspicion. "Why?"
Shisui looked uncomfortable. "I believe he suspects Danzō's motivations. There have been tensions between them recently over other matters. The Hokage may be using our situation as a proxy in his own power struggle with Danzō."
"Village politics," Takeshi scoffed. "While our future hangs in the balance."
"It buys us time," Takeo pointed out. "If the Hokage is restraining Danzō for now, we have more freedom to complete our preparations." He turned back to Shisui. "How long do you think this standoff will last?"
"Not long," Shisui admitted. "Danzō is persistent, and he has supporters on the Council. I'd estimate a week at most before he finds another angle of attack or convinces enough Council members to override the Hokage's caution."
Takeo nodded. "Then we use that week. By the time he makes his move, we'll be ready to make ours."
As the meeting concluded and they prepared to leave separately, Takeo placed a hand on Shisui's shoulder.
"Be careful," he said quietly. "Danzō will be watching you closely now, especially if he suspects the Hokage is using you as a source."
"I know," Shisui replied.
Takeo returned to his quarters via a circuitous route, using Shadow Perception at intervals to ensure he wasn't followed. Once inside, he activated his system space to check his progress.

[Mission:
Exodus Preparations
Objective: Create and distribute emergency evacuation plans to all loyal clan members
Status: 12/50 Families Prepared]
---
12 families.
A small start, but it was only the beginning. Over the coming days, they would expand their preparations, building the network they would need for their escape. For now, they had laid the groundwork, the most critical families were aware and preparing, and the distraction was in place.
Gastly floated near the ceiling, occasionally passing through the wooden beams.
