UCAW: Ch. 05
Added 2025-05-13 14:20:08 +0000 UTCThe morning sun shown through the paper screens of his room. Takeo sat cross-legged, eyes closed, focusing on the warm flow of chakra through his body.
A sudden cool sensation brushed against his neck, causing him to open his eyes. Gastly hovered inches from his face.
"Gaaaastly!" it exclaimed, performing a playful somersault in midair.
He sighed, but couldn't suppress a small smile. "Good morning to you too. I see you're eager to start the day."
Gastly bobbed enthusiastically, expanding and contracting its body with excitement. It swooped around the room, passing through various objects. Each time it emerged, it laughed.
"At least one of us is in a good mood," Takeo murmured, rising to his feet. "We have a lot to accomplish today."
He opened his system space to check his status.

Takeo's eyes narrowed at the new mission. Someone in the clan was feeding information to Danzō, and according to the system, he had less than a day to find them. The reward would be extremely valuable.
"Gastly," he called, drawing the Pokémon's attention from where it was making faces at its reflection in a small mirror. "We have a problem that requires your unique talents."
Gastly floated over, its expression becoming more serious as it sensed Takeo's tone. It swirled around him once before settling in front of his face, eyes focused attentively.
"Someone in the clan is reporting to Danzō. Specifically about the auction preparations and..." Takeo paused, opening his desk drawer to reveal Master Roshi's magazine, "this item in particular."
Gastly's eyes widened. It had been present when Takeshi and Renji had discovered the magazine. The Pokémon made a low, eerie sound.
"Exactly," Takeo nodded. "Only a few people know about this: Takeshi, his assistant Renji, and myself. Yet somehow, Fū knew about it yesterday. I need you to follow both of them discreetly today. See if either makes contact with Root operatives."
Gastly's gaseous body became more compact and focused.
"Be careful," Takeo warned. "These are not ordinary opponents. If they detect you, withdraw immediately. Your safety is more important than information."
Gastly circled around him once, brushing against his shoulder, before phasing through the wall. Only a faint, quickly dissipating mist indicated it had been there at all.
---
Takeo arrived at the Police Force headquarters to find an unusual amount of activity. Officers hurried through the corridors with, and conversations fell silent as he passed.
He found Hiro waiting in his office.
"What's happened?" Takeo asked, closing the door behind him.
"The elders have called an emergency council meeting. Apparently, Yashiro is questioning your authority to organize the auction."
Takeo's eyes narrowed. "On what grounds?"
"He claims you've overstepped by inviting certain individuals without proper consultation. Specifically, he objects to Danzō receiving an invitation."
Just as they'd confirmed a traitor existed, Yashiro was creating internal division.
"When is this meeting?"
"One hour from now. In the main clan hall." Hiro hesitated. "There's something else. Tenma's faction has grown. Nearly twenty clan members now openly question the auction's purpose."
"And Fugaku's position?"
"He's remaining neutral for now. Says he wants to hear all perspectives before weighing in."
Takeo nodded slowly. The clan leader was playing a dangerous game, allowing this challenge to his authority while maintaining plausible deniability. It was politically shrewd, but potentially disastrous for their escape plans.
"Who else supports Yashiro?"
"Inabi and two other elders. The remaining elders are still with you, at least outwardly."
"And Itachi?"
"Absent. Reportedly on an ANBU mission."
"And Shisui?"
"He returned from a mission this morning. His position is unknown."
Takeo considered this information carefully. The timing was too perfect to be coincidence. The traitor was not only feeding information to Root but actively working to disrupt their plans from within.
"I'll attend the meeting," he decided. "In the meantime, I want you to quietly alert our most trusted clan members. Have them prepared to move on short notice."
"You think it will come to that?"
"I think we need to be prepared for all possibilities," Takeo replied. "This sudden opposition feels coordinated."
After Hiro left, he activated his Sharingan, staring at his reflection in the window. The pattern of his Mangekyō looked back at him. He had hoped to avoid internal conflict, but it seemed increasingly unavoidable.
---
The main clan hall was filled to capacity when Takeo arrived. Clan members lined the walls, their expressions ranging from curious to concerned. At the front, the seven elders sat in a semicircle, with Fugaku at the center. Yashiro sat to his right, looking unusually confident.
He walked calmly to the open space before the elders and bowed formally.
"I understand there are concerns about the auction preparations," he said. "I'm here to address them."
Yashiro spoke first, not waiting for Fugaku's acknowledgment. "Takeo, you have taken unprecedented liberties with clan matters. Inviting Danzō, a known opponent of the Uchiha, to an event where our most valuable possessions will be displayed shows poor judgment at best, treachery at worst."
"The purpose of the auction," Takeo replied calmly, "is to convert physical assets to more portable wealth. For that to succeed, we need buyers with resources. Danzō, whatever his feelings toward our clan, represents significant potential purchasing power."
"And what of the rumors that you're planning something beyond a simple auction?" Yashiro pressed. "That this is merely the first step in some greater scheme?"
So that was the angle of attack. Takeo glanced at Fugaku, whose face revealed nothing. The clan leader was waiting to see how he would handle this challenge.
"If by 'greater scheme' you mean securing our clan's future prosperity, then yes," Takeo said, addressing not just Yashiro but the entire room. "The Uchiha have faced increasing restrictions and suspicion from Konoha. Our businesses are regularly shut down on arbitrary pretexts. Our mission assignments grow more dangerous while our representation in village leadership diminishes. Converting our assets to gold gives us flexibility. It allows us to invest where opportunities arise, rather than remaining vulnerable to the village's shifting political winds."
"Pretty words," Yashiro said dismissively. "But they don't explain why you've been meeting secretly with certain clan members, planning contingencies that haven't been shared with this council."
Takeo felt a flutter of concern. How much did he know? "In times of uncertainty, prudence dictates preparation. Any contingencies I've explored have been with the clan's best interests at heart."
"Then share these contingencies with us now," Yashiro demanded. "Let the entire clan judge whether they serve our best interests."
A trap, and not a subtle one. If Takeo revealed their evacuation plans, Yashiro or whoever the traitor was, would immediately report to Danzō. If he refused, he would appear to be hiding something.
"Very well," he said, deciding on a partial truth. "I have explored the possibility of establishing Uchiha outposts in territories beyond the Land of Fire. Areas where our skills would be valued rather than feared. Not as a replacement for our presence in Konoha, but as an expansion of our influence and a diversification of our vulnerabilities."
This was plausible enough to be believable while vague enough to reveal nothing of the actual plan.
"Expansion?" Yashiro scoffed. "Or exile?"
"That's enough, Yashiro," Fugaku finally spoke. "His plans, whatever their scope, have been conducted with my knowledge and tentative approval. The auction will proceed as planned."
Yashiro's eyes widened in surprise, clearly not expecting Fugaku's support. "But—"
"The decision is made," Fugaku said with finality. "Takeo will continue to oversee the auction preparations. Any specific concerns about implementation details should be brought to him directly, not aired as public accusations."
Takeo bowed to Fugaku. "Thank you, Fugaku-sama. I will ensure the clan's interests are protected throughout this process."
As the meeting dispersed, he noticed Tenma watching him with narrowed eyes from across the room. The younger Uchiha made no attempt to hide his suspicion or disapproval.
Naori appeared at Takeo's side as he exited the hall. "Takeo-sama, a moment please."
He followed her to a quiet corner. "What have you learned?"
"Tenma met with an unknown figure last night, outside the village walls," she reported quietly. "I couldn't get close enough to identify them, but the meeting lasted nearly an hour."
"Did you see which direction this figure came from?"
"From the Root headquarters area," she confirmed. "But there's something else. After the meeting, Tenma didn't return directly to the compound. He went to Yashiro's house first."
So father and son were coordinating. But was either the actual traitor, or were they being manipulated by a third party?
"Keep watching them," Takeo instructed. "But be extremely careful. If they're working with Root, they'll be on alert for surveillance."
---
Takeo was in a secure room within the Police Force headquarters, examining Master Roshi's magazine more carefully. If this item was of such interest to Danzō, perhaps there was more to it than he'd initially realized.
He studied each page meticulously, using his Sharingan to detect any hidden elements. The content itself was exactly what one would expect from such a publication. But the real value lay in its very impossibility. The printing techniques, photographic quality, and paper composition were beyond anything available in the shinobi world. To a knowledgeable collector, this alone would mark it as an object of extreme rarity.
A soft mist seeping under the door indicated Gastly's return. The Pokémon materialized fully once the door was closed, looking unusually agitated.
"What did you find?" Takeo asked, setting the magazine aside.
Gastly floated closer, projecting a series of images. Takeshi spending the morning organizing auction items, nothing suspicious in his behavior. But Renji...
The images shifted to show the young Uchiha entering a small tea shop, sitting alone in a corner booth. After several minutes, a plain-looking man joined him, Fū, without his Root uniform but unmistakable to Takeo.
"So it's Renji. Did you see what information was exchanged?"
Gastly swirled in frustration, conveying that it couldn't get close enough without risking detection. But its impressions showed Renji passing something small, likely a note, to Fū before departing separately.
"You did well," Takeo assured the Pokémon. "Now we know who the traitor is. But we still need to determine Yashiro and Tenma's role in this. Are they also working with Root, or are they simply creating internal division for their own purposes?"
Gastly made a low sound.
"We could confront Renji directly," Takeo mused, "but that would alert Danzō that we've discovered his spy. Better to feed him false information, lead Root exactly where we want them while our real preparations continue elsewhere."
He picked up the magazine again, an idea forming. "And I think I know exactly how to do it."
---
Takeo sought out Takeshi, finding him in the auction preparation area, supervising the cataloging of items.
"Takeshi, I need a private word," he said, gesturing toward a secluded corner.
Once they were alone, he spoke quietly. "I've discovered something potentially valuable about the magazine."
Takeshi's eyes widened with interest. "More than we already knew?"
"Possibly. It appears to contain some kind of hidden information, unique techniques or secret knowledge encoded in the images themselves."
"Are you certain?" Takeshi asked, intrigued.
"Not entirely, which is why I haven't mentioned it until now. But I've been using my Sharingan to examine it more closely. There are patterns that suggest this isn't merely an exotic entertainment item."
"That would explain Danzō's interest," Takeshi said thoughtfully.
"Exactly," Takeo agreed. "I want you to casually mention this possibility to Renji when you next see him. Say that we're conducting a more thorough analysis and may need to reconsider including it in the auction if it proves to have strategic value."
"Considering his father's interest in rare publications, that should certainly get his attention," Takeshi noted.
"One more thing," Takeo added. "Tell him we've moved the magazine to a special secure storage area, the old shrine at the edge of the compound, for further study. But be subtle about it, make it seem like an offhand detail."
"You suspect him," Takeshi realized, his expression growing serious.
"I have concerns," Takeo confirmed without elaborating. "Just follow my instructions precisely. And don't let him know you're suspicious."
"Of course, Takeo-sama."
As Takeshi left to carry out his task, Takeo turned his attention to the next phase of his plan. If Renji was the traitor, he would relay this information to Danzō, who would undoubtedly be interested in this supposed hidden knowledge.
---
It was already dark when Takeo prepared the old shrine. The building had been abandoned for years, used occasionally for clan ceremonies but otherwise left to gather dust.
He had arrived hours earlier, carefully placing subtle traps and sensory triggers around the perimeter. Not enough to deter a determined infiltrator, but sufficient to alert him to their approach. The magazine itself was prominently displayed in a special case at the center of the shrine.
Gastly hovered in the rafters, nearly invisible in the darkness.
Takeo activated the Stealth Enhancement Seal affixed to his back under his clothing, making his chakra signature nearly undetectable. He then created a shadow clone and positioned himself in the shadows of the shrine's alcove, completely hidden from view.
His clone sat in plain sight, appearing to meditate while Takeo closed his eyes, extending his senses outward.
A faint vibration from one of his perimeter triggers brought him to full alertness. Someone was approaching.
Another trigger vibrated.
Closer now.
Above, Gastly remained perfectly still.
Takeo could hear the faint sound of breathing just outside the shrine's entrance. The intruder was good, almost undetectable to normal senses.
A shadow slipped through the entrance, moving across the wooden floor. From his position in the alcove, Takeo observed without moving while his clone remained seemingly unaware.
The figure approached the displayed magazine, moonlight now revealing their identity: Renji.
So he is doing his own infiltration rather than simply reporting to Root. Interesting. Is he working independently, seeking to prove his value to Danzō? Or is this a test of his loyalty?
Takeo waited, curious to see what Renji would do. The younger Uchiha examined the magazine case carefully, checking for traps before gently lifting the lid. He removed a small object from his pocket. It was a camera, primitive by the standards of Takeo's original world but advanced technology here.
As Renji began photographing the magazine pages, Takeo's clone finally spoke, "Collecting material for your father's collection?"
The young Uchiha froze, then whirled around, kunai instantly in hand. "Takeo-sama! I was just—"
"Betraying your clan?" the clone suggested, standing up with normal Sharingan activated. "Spying for Danzō?"
"No! I was..." Renji's protest died as he saw the coldness in the clone's eyes.
"You were careless," the clone said, circling him slowly.
Fear flickered across Renji's face. "Are you going to kill me?"
"That depends entirely on you," the clone replied with a smile. "I want to know exactly what you've told Danzō. And please, don't leave anything out."
"I can't," Renji said, his voice showing more loyalty than Takeo had expected. "He protects Konoha from threats. Even internal ones."
From his hidden position, Takeo frowned. How did Danzō secure such loyalty?
"And is that what you believe the Uchiha are? A threat?" the clone asked.
"The clan is planning something," Renji said, finding some courage. "The auction is just a cover. He says you're preparing for a coup against the Hokage."
"Danzō sees conspiracies where none exist, Renji. What we're planning is survival, not rebellion."
"Then why the secrecy? Why convert everything to gold? Why the private meetings and plans?"
"Because Danzō and those like him have already decided our fate," the clone said coldly. "The Uchiha are to be controlled or eliminated. The only choice we have is whether to accept that fate or forge our own."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean Danzō hasn't told you everything. He's planning a strike against the clan, perhaps even complete elimination," the clone said.
"No," Renji shook his head. "He wouldn't... He just wants to prevent a coup. To protect the village."
"Is that what he told you?" the clone asked, shaking his head. "Let me show you what Danzō truly intends."
In the shadows, Takeo activated his Mangekyō and used Kūmu Yurei. Dark mist began to form throughout the shrine, seemingly emanating from the clone.
Before Renji could react, tendrils of shadowy mist wrapped around him. His eyes widened in shock as he felt himself being pulled partly into the abyss, not fully transported, but enough to see shadowy visions Takeo projected.
Renji saw everything, Root's surveillance, Danzō's meetings with Council members, the architectural plans of the Uchiha compound they'd requisitioned, all the evidence he'd gathered of their impending action against the clan.
When Takeo released the technique, Renji collapsed to his knees, gasping. "This can't be real... He promised the clan would be protected... just the ringleaders arrested..."
"His promises are as substantial as this," the clone said, passing his hand through a wisp of mist. "He used you, Renji. Used your concern for the village to betray your own blood."
Tears formed in Renji's eyes. "What have I done?"
"You can still make it right," the clone said, his voice softening slightly. "Tell me everything you've reported to him."
And Renji did.
Between shuddering breaths, he confessed how Danzō had approached him months ago, appealing to his sense of duty to Konoha. How he'd been feeding information about clan activities, focusing especially on Takeo's movements and meetings. And most recently, reporting on the auction preparations and the mysterious magazine.
"He became very interested when I mentioned the magazine," Renji admitted.
"And did he instruct you to steal it?"
"No... that was my idea. I thought if I could bring him something of value, prove my usefulness..." Renji's voice trailed off.
"I see," the clone said. "And Yashiro and Tenma? Are they also working with Danzō?"
Renji looked confused. "No, not that I know of. He mentioned them once, said they might be natural allies against 'radical elements' in the clan. But I never saw them at any meetings... What will you do with me?"
The clone considered for a moment. "You're going to continue reporting to Danzō."
"What?" Renji looked up in shock.
"But now you'll report exactly what I tell you to. You're going to help save the clan you nearly destroyed."
"And if I refuse?"
The clone's eyes narrowed. "Then the clan will learn of your betrayal before your execution. Your family will bear the shame for generations."
Renji's shoulders slumped in defeat. "I'll do whatever you ask."
"Good," the clone said. "Your first task is to report that the magazine does indeed contain hidden information, techniques for enhancing genjutsu beyond normal limits. Tell Danzō we're planning to unveil this discovery at the auction to drive up the bidding."
"He'll want to see proof."
"Tell him we're still decoding it. That I'm personally overseeing the process and keeping the details closely guarded."
Renji nodded slowly. "And what else?"
"Tell him our security will be focused on protecting the magazine and other valuable auction items. That we've reduced patrols in the southern section of the compound to compensate. Your role in our survival depends on your performance. Fail me, and I won't be as merciful next time."
After Renji departed, Takeo stepped out from the shadows and dispelled his clone. Gastly descended from the rafters, circling Takeo curiously.
"Yes, I'm aware he might still betray us. But he's more useful to us as a controlled source of misinformation than as a corpse."
Gastly made a sound that somehow conveyed skepticism.
"Danzō believes we're planning a coup. Let's give him 'evidence' that confirms his suspicions while we prepare our real escape. And he never saw my Mangekyō - only the effects of it. That information remains our advantage."
The Pokémon performed a slow loop around the shrine.
"Besides," Takeo added with a grim smile, "if Renji does betray us again, you can have the pleasure of haunting him for the rest of his very short life."
Gastly grinned.
---
Back in his quarters, Takeo found Shisui waiting for him, seated calmly beside the low table.
"You took a risk coming here," Takeo said, closing the door. "ANBU surveillance has increased."
"I know," Shisui replied. "I disabled three listening devices on my way in."
"What news?"
"Danzō is moving faster than we anticipated. He's secured provisional approval from the Hokage for increased security measures around the Uchiha district, citing 'credible intelligence' of destabilizing activities."
"The Hokage believes him?"
"Not entirely," Shisui said. "But he's concerned enough to authorize limited action. For now, it's just additional patrols and monitoring. But Danzō is pushing for more invasive measures."
"How much time do we have?"
"Days, perhaps. A week at most before something triggers a more aggressive response." Shisui's expression was grim. "Danzō suggested to me privately that preserving Konoha's security might require 'surgical removal of the infection.'"
"Meaning us," Takeo translated.
"He specifically mentioned you, actually. Said that without your influence, the clan might return to a more 'cooperative' stance."
Takeo nodded slowly. "That fits with what we've learned. I've identified our traitor, by the way. Renji, one of Takeshi's assistants. He's been reporting directly to Fū. I've turned him, or at least I think I have. We're feeding Danzō false information now."
Shisui looked troubled. "Be careful with that approach. Danzō is more perceptive than most. If he suspects the information is tainted..."
"I know. But we need time to prepare our people. The auction is still our best cover for gathering resources and maintaining the appearance of normalcy."
Shisui stood, walking to the window. "There's something I haven't told you."
"Go on."
"I've been developing a plan. A way to potentially avoid all this, the conflict, the exodus, everything." He turned to face Takeo. "My Mangekyō ability, Kotoamatsukami, could be used to alter Danzō's perceptions. To make him see the Uchiha as valuable allies rather than threats."
Takeo stared at his friend. "You'd use your ultimate genjutsu on a Council member?"
"Yes." Shisui's voice was firm.
It was a tempting proposition. If Shisui could change Danzō's view of the Uchiha, perhaps they wouldn't need to leave Konoha at all. But something felt wrong about the plan.
"And after Danzō?" Takeo asked. "There are others in Konoha who fear and distrust us. Would you use Kotoamatsukami on them too? On the entire village, one by one?"
Shisui frowned. "Of course not. But Danzō is the primary driver of anti-Uchiha sentiment. Without his influence..."
"The sentiment would remain," Takeo said firmly. "It might be less organized and focused, but it would still exist. And eventually, it would find another champion."
"So you still believe leaving is the only option?"
"I believe it's our best option," Takeo corrected. "A fresh start, somewhere our abilities are valued rather than feared."
Shisui fell silent, considering this. Finally, he nodded. "Very well. I'll continue helping with the evacuation plans. But keep my alternate proposal in mind. If things deteriorate more quickly than we can respond to..."
"I will," Takeo promised. "And Shisui? Thank you. Your support means more than you know."
After Shisui departed, he activated his system space to check the mission status.

[Mission:
The Root of Treachery (Completed - Reward Unclaimed)]
---
Claim.
---
[Obtained:
- Points: 7,500
- Skill: Shadow Perception]
[Mission:
Exodus Preparations
Objective: Create and distribute emergency evacuation plans to all loyal clan members
Status: 0/50 Families Prepared]
---
As expected, the system had accepted his approach with Renji, neutralizing a threat didn't necessarily mean elimination.
Activate Shadow Perception.
---
[Shadow Perception (Active Skill: Blue Rank):
A specialized sensory technique that allows the user to detect hidden enemies, traps, and surveillance within a defined radius. By sending out faint pulses of void-infused chakra that interact differently with living beings versus inanimate objects, this skill provides a mental map of concealed threats.
Activation: Requires a specific chakra molding pattern and mental focus.
Range: 50-meter radius at base level. Range increases with proficiency and chakra investment.
Effects:
- Detects hidden enemies regardless of most concealment techniques
- Identifies active traps and surveillance devices
- Provides approximate location and number of threats, though not precise identities
- Functions even in complete darkness or through solid barriers (up to 1 meter thickness)
Limitations:
- Consumes moderate chakra while active (approximately 5% of reserves per minute of use)
- Creates a subtle void signature that can be detected by high-level sensor types
- Cannot penetrate specialized chakra-blocking materials or sealing techniques
- Effectiveness decreases against targets specifically trained to mask their presence
- Extended use (beyond 10 minutes) causes increasing head strain, manifesting as a dull ache and eventually minor bleeding from the nose
Synergy: This skill complements Kūmu Yurei, as both draw upon the properties of the Void. When used in conjunction with the Mangekyō Sharingan, the chakra cost is reduced by approximately 30%, but the eye strain develops more rapidly.]
---
Takeo felt a new ability integrate with his consciousness. He closed his eyes, forming the modified Ram sign, and activated the skill for a brief test.
Instantly, his awareness expanded outward in a sphere around him. He could sense two ANBU watchers on the rooftop across from his quarters. Further out, he detected several clan members moving through the compound.
"Very useful," he murmured, releasing the technique before the chakra drain became too taxing.
With this new ability, even ROOT's most skilled operatives would find it difficult to monitor the clan's preparations undetected. He made a mental note to use it sparingly, though, mindful of the strain it would cause with prolonged use.
The new mission confirmed what he already knew: time was running out. They needed to accelerate their preparations immediately.
