HGBW: Ch. 141

The moon light illuminated the remnants of what had been a fierce clash between the Konoha and Suna forces. Bodies lay scattered across the muddy ground, both friend and foe, while the rain had finally ceased, leaving behind a heavy mist.

Tanaka stood atop a small ridge, identifying the wounded.

"43 dead on our side," he said without turning as Hizashi approached from behind. "28 critically wounded who won't survive the night without immediate intervention. Suna lost at least 150, with another 30 retreating through the northern pass."

Hizashi came to stand beside him. "And the poison?"

"Still present in the lower valley. Anyone entering without protection will be affected within minutes. Tsunade is working on an antidote, but the molecular structure is complex. Chiyo has outdone herself this time."

Hizashi nodded, his own Byakugan scanning the surroundings. "The clan members performed admirably. Only seven casualties among the Hyūga."

Silence.

Finally, Hizashi spoke, "The wounded need treatment, defenses must be fortified, and our forces require rest."

Tanaka nodded. "I'll coordinate with Tsunade. We need to prioritize those who can return to battle quickly."

---

White tents had been erected in a sheltered valley, protected by natural stone formations. Inside the largest tent, Tsunade moved between patients.

Tanaka entered, immediately assessing the situation. Medical-nin, including many of the Hyūga Tsunade had personally trained, worked diligently on the wounded.

Tsunade looked up as he approached. "Tanaka. Give me your assessment of the battlefield."

"Suna has retreated to regroup, likely planning their next attack. We have approximately twelve hours before they return with reinforcements. The poison cloud is dissipating slower than expected, still making the northern valley impassable."

"Chiyo must have been developing it since the last war."

"May I?" Tanaka gestured toward a sample she had been analyzing.

"Be my guest. Maybe those eyes of yours can see something I've missed."

Tanaka activated his Byakugan, focusing on the molecular level of the poison sample. He studied its structure, comparing it to his knowledge of poisons and antidotes from both worlds.

"The poison has a dual-phase composition," he explained, pointing to specific molecules visible only to his Byakugan. "The primary agent attacks the respiratory system, but there's a secondary compound that lies dormant until medical chakra is applied. That's why your initial treatments were ineffective, the healing chakra triggers the second phase."

Tsunade's eyes widened. "Cleverly designed to counter medical-nin specifically. Chiyo knows I'd be here."

"If we modify the approach, using physical extraction methods first before applying chakra, we might bypass the secondary trigger mechanism."

Tsunade considered this for a moment, then nodded sharply. "It's worth trying. I'll adjust our treatment protocols immediately."

A medical-nin rushed into the tent. "Lady Tsunade! The patient in tent three just went into cardiac arrest after treatment!"

"Exactly as we just discussed," Tsunade said grimly. "Tanaka, take over here. I'll handle the emergency."

As she rushed out, Tanaka moved to the patient she had been treating, a young Uchiha ninja with severe chakra pathway damage from a puppet's poison senbon. He placed his hands over the man's chest, carefully extracting minute amounts of the poison physically before applying the gentlest healing chakra possible.

"Tanaka-sama," a soft voice called from behind.

He turned to see Mikoto, her uniform torn and bloodstained, but otherwise unharmed.

Their eyes met.

"Your clansman," Tanaka explained. "Puppet senbon, laced with Chiyo's new poison. I'm extracting it now."

Mikoto moved to the opposite side of the bed. "He's my second cousin. Thank you for helping him."

"How are you holding up?" Tanaka asked, his focus remaining on the extraction procedure.

"I'm fine. My squad secured the western ridge as planned." A pause. "The tactic against the puppets saved many of us. The Sharingan could track their movements, but your insight about targeting the chakra threads made all the difference."

Tanaka nodded slightly. "The Sharingan and Byakugan complement each other well in this type of combat. We should coordinate more closely in the next engagement."

"Agreed."

As they worked together in silence, he discreetly observed her with his peripheral vision. Her favorability toward him had increased during the battle, now at 84.

---

As evening fell, the leaders gathered in the command tent. Tsunade stood at the head of the table, with Shikaku to her right. Tanaka, Hizashi, and several jonin commanders formed a circle around the tactical display.

"Suna is regrouping here," Shikaku pointed to a position on the map. "Based on their movement patterns and supply lines, they'll likely attack from these three positions simultaneously."

"Their puppet corps took heavy losses," added a scarred jonin. "But intelligence suggests Chiyo has reserves, specially designed puppets she's been saving for a decisive strike."

Tsunade folded her arms. "And what about this unexpected Kiri involvement?"

The gathered leaders exchanged concerned glances.

"Kiri is officially neutral in this conflict," Hizashi noted. "This suggests either a rogue element or unofficial involvement."

"Either way," Shikaku interjected, "we must prepare for potential three-way engagement. Kiri may be testing both Konoha and Suna's defenses, looking for opportunities."

Tsunade turned to Tanaka. "What's your assessment of our Hyūga contingent's condition?"

"73 combat-ready," Tanaka replied without hesitation. "27 injured but recoverable within 48 hours with proper medical care. As I mentioned, seven casualties."

"And your recommendation for deployment?"

Tanaka stepped forward, studying the map. After a moment's consideration, he pointed to several key positions.

"We should position Hyūga observation posts here, here, and here, creating a triangulation network that covers all potential approach vectors. Each post needs only two Byakugan users for continuous surveillance, rotating in four-hour shifts to prevent eye strain."

He moved his finger to another section of the map. "The main Hyūga fighting force should be held in reserve here, equidistant from all three likely attack points. With our visual range, we can respond to any breach within minutes."

Shikaku nodded approvingly. "A solid defensive formation that maximizes your clan's strengths."

"What about the Uchiha contingent?" asked another jonin.

"They would be most effective here," Tanaka indicated a forward position. "The Sharingan's genjutsu capabilities can disrupt puppet control, and their fire techniques are effective against Suna's cloth-based concealment tactics."

Mikoto, who had entered silently during the discussion, spoke up. "I concur with this assessment. Our clan's techniques are well-suited for that position."

Tsunade studied the proposed arrangement, then gave a decisive nod. "Implement these deployments immediately. Shikaku will coordinate the remaining forces to complement this foundation."

As the meeting dispersed, Tanaka noticed a lone figure standing slightly apart from the others, Duy, the so-called "Eternal Genin," watching the proceedings with intense focus but contributing nothing.

---

Later that night, Tanaka sat cross-legged in his tent, with only a small oil lamp as a source of light. Before him lay a scroll containing notes on the Eight Gates, annotated with his own observations and theories. His mind, however, was elsewhere.

A soft rustle at the tent entrance pulled him from his thoughts.

"Enter," he said, knowing already who stood outside.

Hizashi slipped in silently, taking a seat across from him. "You should be resting."

"As should you , yet here we are."

Hizashi smiled wryly. "Old habits. I find sleep elusive before battle."

"We need to discuss the clan's position," Tanaka said, rolling up the scroll. "This war is an opportunity and a threat."

"How so?"

"If we perform exceptionally, it strengthens our position in Konoha politics. The Hyūga name becomes associated with victory, increasing our influence. However... If casualties mount, particularly among our most talented members, it weakens us for generations."

Hizashi nodded gravely.

"I've been analyzing our clan members' performance today. Some showed exceptional aptitude that wasn't apparent during training."

"Such as?"

"Homon and Tetsu displayed tactical flexibility beyond their years. They should be given field command of smaller units. Natsu's medical applications saved three lives today, we should expand that training program."

"And the vulnerabilities?"

Tanaka's expression darkened. "Our traditional formation is too rigid against Suna's poison attacks. We need to implement more fluid defensive patterns. Also, several younger members hesitated when facing human puppets, a psychological weakness Chiyo will certainly exploit again."

"What do you propose?"

"A midnight training session for all available clan members. We'll simulate puppet encounters and drill new defensive rotations. It sacrifices some rest, but better tired than dead, right?"

Hizashi studied him for a long moment. "You've changed, Tanaka. There was a time when you would have protected yourself above all others."

"The clan is my responsibility now," Tanaka replied evenly. "My strength means nothing if it falls."

The truth was more complex. He needed the Hyūga clan as his power base in this world, just as he needed his growing network in the One Piece world. But beyond cold calculation, he had genuinely come to value these people, Hizashi most of all, whose favorability toward him remained steadfast above 90.

"Very well," Hizashi said, rising to his feet. "I'll gather the clan for training. But promise me you'll rest afterward."

"I will," Tanaka promised, though both knew he would likely find other work before seeking sleep.

After Hizashi left, he closed his eyes, focusing inward. He carefully regulated his chakra flow.

---

The next day, Tanaka was standing alone on the ridge once more, watching the sun rise over the battlefield. The bodies had been collected, the wounded treated, and defenses reinforced. Yet the evidence of battle remained visible in the scarred earth.

He used his Observation Haki to scan the horizon for any signs of enemy movement.

Nothing yet, but they would come.

War was inevitable.

"Mind if I join you?" a voice asked from behind.

Tanaka sensed Tsunade approaching, looking remarkably fresh despite having worked through the night treating the wounded.

"Of course not."

She came to stand beside him, surveying the battlefield. "Your antidote suggestion worked. We've stabilized all but three of the critical cases."

"I'm glad to hear it."

"You know," she said after a pause, "when you joined this campaign, some questioned whether someone so young could handle the realities of war. I think you've answered that question."

"War is just another form of conflict," Tanaka replied. "The scale changes, but the principles remain the same."

"True. But most ninja your age would be overwhelmed by the responsibility, the bloodshed."

"I've seen worse," he said simply, thinking of the night he eliminated the Hyūga main house.

Tsunade studied him. Finally, she spoke again. "Scouts report Suna is mobilizing faster than expected. Chiyo seems determined to press her advantage."

"We have company. Three scouts, Suna uniforms, approaching from the northwest ridge. They're using earth-style camouflage, but their chakra signatures are distinct."

"Should we intercept them?"

Tanaka considered for a moment, then smiled slightly. "No. Let them observe our preparations. What they see will be... instructive."

"You want them to report back?"

"With very specific information," Tanaka clarified. "If Chiyo believes our forces are deployed according to standard Konoha doctrine, her attack will follow predictable patterns. We can use that against her."

"A misinformation campaign," Tsunade nodded approvingly. "Shikaku would approve."

"It was actually his idea," Tanaka admitted. "We discussed it during the night watch."

He turned his gaze back to the distant Suna scouts, watching them settle into observation positions. "They'll remain there for approximately three hours, based on standard Suna reconnaissance protocols. Just enough time for us to put on a convincing performance."

"I'll inform the jonin commanders," Tsunade said. "We'll give our guests quite a show."

As she turned to leave, Tanaka's Observation caught something else from an unexpected direction.

"There's something else you should know," he called.

She paused, turning back. "What is it?"

"We're being watched by more than just Suna. There's another observer, northeast quadrant, using a concealment technique I'm not familiar with."

"Kiri again?"

"Unclear." Tanaka narrowed his eyes, activating his Byakugan.

Tsunade's face hardened. "Keep tracking them. If they make any aggressive moves, we eliminate them immediately."

As Tsunade departed to organize their deception for the Suna scouts, Tanaka remained on the ridge, alternating his observation between the known the Suna observers and the mysterious presence lurking in the shadows.

---

From his hidden vantage point, the mysterious figure watched Tanaka with great interest. The young Hyūga had detected him despite his concealment technique, impressive, but not entirely unexpected. The boy's reputation was growing rapidly, even reaching the hidden corners of the shinobi world where normal information didn't flow.

"So that's him," the figure whispered to himself. "The one who broke the Caged Bird. Interesting."

He made a subtle hand sign, activating a communication jutsu. "Target confirmed. Proceeding with observation as instructed."

The voice that responded was distorted. "Determine his full capabilities. He is... interested."

"Understood."
