So when people buy exotic animals there's no funding to send them to conservations or rescues that can help them. The reason there's never any funding (at least here in the usa) is because sadly people don't think it's their problem to care. I wish more people did though, there are so many animals that are becoming extinct thanks to humanity and yet most people are unbothered because they assume it doesn't affect them. It would actually be a huge benefit if zoos did get turned into conservations instead. Honestly there's so much that goes into a topic like this, especially when looked at globally. Thank you for sharing your rant with me.

2025-02-22 20:27:01 +0000 UTCThere's also a nice pipeline (that could be expanded) between these sort of shelters and animal sanctuaries (think Maya Higa's Alveus) that specifically adopt animals for permanent (or long-term) rehabilitation when euthanasia would have been the only other alternative. Which becomes even more appealing when you consider how animals are purposefully bred in zoos for no other reason than human entertainment. Zoos obviously have a lot of potential for conservation of naturally extinct or near-extinct species (specifically for genetic diversity), though mostly because they have stronger funding due to being traditionally considered faunal analogies to herbariums. Sanctuaries are great additions (sometimes even replacements) for educational and research purposes. I specifically dislike the abundant focus on exotic animals in zoos. For instance: there is no reason, other than for human entertainment, to move orang-utans out of humid tropical climates, when there already are zoos and sanctuaries, in which they can be studied, in SE Asia. This is where you would find individuals in need of rehabilitation to begin with... On this issue specifically, the global south simply needs more funding for native biological conservation. There is, globally, a huge equity-issue here; most resources never leave the global north, which obviously has huge ties to post- and neo-colonialism (the wealth of Europe and North America has been built on oppression and theft). And this is only exacerbated by the huge amount of biological diversity in the tropics, especially in relation to the temperate systems of the colonial powers. Rant over.

2025-02-22 10:44:30 +0000 UTCyou want to know what sucks about kill shelters? they are unfortunately necessary, shelters that kill animals due to lack of space are horrible, I'm not condoning that. But if you've ever tried taking a stray cat or dog to non kill shelters, more often than not they don't take them in. Rescues and non kill shelters pick and choose animals they KNOW they can make a profit on. I used to work at an animal shelter that humanely euthanized only for extreme behavioral and/or medical reasons. In order to take in EVERY animal you HAVE to be able to euth, nobody else would take in an injured animal, or an animal at the brink of death and mercy them. If anything shelters that do HUMANE euthanasia need funds the most, at least at the shelter I worked at, we NEVER had space. We still took in EVERY SINGLE animal but we struggled constantly with space. We were constantly over worked because we were so understaffed, I can't tell you how many 11 hour work days I had a week. People who adopt are also at fault I can't tell you how many times people would adopt kittens or puppies and return them because they "need too much attention" or even turn them in as strays which is WORSE because of the shelter's policy. (honestly I could go on this tangent forever) I wish more people would talk about it. We've had Wolf Dog Hybrids, mountain lions, cows, poisonous snakes, injured pigeons, a lot of "exotic" animals to our desert environment and since there are no rescues in our area or places that could care for them a lot of times they have to be euthanized. I think a couple month ago we had peacocks and some rich lady who owns a lot of land near here adopted them. But I digress, there's a lot more that goes into shelters than most people know. Again I'm not saying ALL kill shelters are great, I know there's a few that wrongfully euthanize animals that don't need to be for "lack of space". The shelter I used to work at would hold adopting events to get rid of animals so we could have more space (most people returned those animals a week later)
