2024-12-23 18:00:37 +0000 UTCIRRADIATION MENTION!!! fun fact: as a radiation worker I am legally allowed to receive a total dose of up to 5 rem a year. Non radiation workers are only allowed to receive up to 2 rem a year. (In the US anyway. For international folks, 1 rem is equal to 0.01 sieverts.) Those limits are guidelines so radiation safety officers set up shielding correctly. Another fun fact: the two most important things to know about radiation protection is ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) referring to dose, and Time, Distance, and Shielding. Time refers to half lives, distance refers to the fact that the farther away the source is, the less the dose you will receive, and shielding which refers to using the correct material for the type of radiation it is. Lead is the strongest and is used for gammas, plastic is good for betas, and alphas can’t even penetrate skin. BUT DON’T INGEST ALPHAS. They will cause harm to your body if you do that. Unless it’s for cancer treatment and a doctor gives you a capsule of something, in which case it will kill the cancer cells nicely. Then you will pass the capsule and be quarantined until you have excreted or urinated out enough radiation that you’re no longer radioactive. There is a lot more information where this came from (off the top of my head)
