2023-05-31 04:03:57 +0000 UTCwhen mika says space what he really means is spacetime: 3 dimensions of space, and 1 dimension of time. you can imagine this as a grid of cubes. so picture a normal grid of squares, but add another dimension to it. now the edges of each cube can extend over the x, y and z dimensions (up, right, forward) the time dimension just means that change can happen in this spacetime. you can just picture this as the whole grid literally moving forward through the dimension of time, each step being an image of the current state of the universe. on the "small" scale, spacetime curves because of concentrations of mass: stars, planets, black holes, etc. that is what gravity is. what mika means by space being flat is that the grid itself doesn't curve. if you imagine that grid of cubes bending, creating a sphere of sorts, with a center and a surface, that implies that the universe is finite. the center would be the big bang, and the surface would be the "end" of the universe. because we have no evidence that supports the claim that the universe is finite, it must be flat; a.k.a. a grid with straight lines only. about seeing in two dimensions, mika is right, tho his explanation is a little confusing. indeed, each eye captures only a 2D image of the world. depth perception comes from the brain calculating how far something is from your eyes, based on the difference between where a point is in the image of each eye. it might be easier to understand this if you imagine a 2-dimensional creature. take Mario, for example, from the older games. picture a single frame of the game: imagine you printed it. if you look at the paper from one of the edges, you see just a line. that is what Mario sees. he can't see left or right, because that would be the depth dimension from our perspective. hope this helped someone understand spacial dimensions better 🤓🤓🤓
