Not to start a full theological discussion in the comments of a podcast but I feel like the other responses were very dismissive and I hate the rise of anti-intellectualism recently so I just wanted to respond. Also I feel like you had some interesting points that I wanted to respond to. (If you saw my earlier comment its cause Patreon is fucking STUPID and I hit enter to go to the next line and it just decided to post the comment? Come on). Anyway, as an atheist I’m definitely not as well versed in all of the Christian lore and theology as you are and I’m gonna try to keep this respectful but just based off what you said and my own knowledge I have some questions: 1. I understand your point in saying that God has a plan and that he allows struggle to take place because it all works out as part of a bigger picture/creates character development but I feel like there are many cases in which this just isn’t true. What about people who lose their lives to natural disasters or murder or any other evil act? There’s no bigger plan for them, they just die. You could say that this is part of a bigger plan for their loved ones or people affected by their deaths but I feel like that’s just cruel, sacrificing some of his creations for the benefit of others. Additionally, why is it that some people go through more struggle than others? People with mental illness, addiction, or those who experience trauma are objectively dealt a worse hand than those whose struggle is due to external factors or trivial things. Why is there this discriminatory bias against certain people but not others? Especially children who are killed or experience child abuse, they hardly get a chance to reach the higher plan if they’re fucked from the start. 2. As for your point about Adam and Eve and the original sin I don’t have much to say on it because I honestly don’t know a lot about it but if it’s supposed to be our purpose to repent ourselves of sin by believing in God and living a life of Christianity why is it that this is made easy for certain people and difficult for others with no rhyme or reason. A person who is raised in a Christian household, going to church every Sunday, and being taught about God is infinitely more likely to believe than someone who was raised atheist or had an experience that made them renounce God. Additionally, if God is all knowing then he would know which events would have to transpire to make each and every Christian lose faith. Knowing this, how is it fair to put certain people in that situation but not others? If God is all powerful, why is it that he chooses to make it so that some people have a higher chance of believing than others and then discriminate against those who were given less of a chance? It seems unfair. 3. Hopefully not a long paragraph for this one but is the concept of free will not contradictory to the belief that God has a plan for everyone? If your life is predetermined and God already knows and chooses which situations and events will happen in your entire life, how is it also true that we also have free will to determine our own futures? I suspect the response would be something like: we have the free will to believe in God and trust that he has a plan and will make our situation better but in response to that I would refer back to my previous point that the choice to believe in God is also predetermined by God for the most part and certain people will not, or can not choose that path. All in all I hope this wasn’t offensive in any way and sorry it was pretty long, I was like β€œI’m just gonna post a quick reply” then I started typing and it became a whole essay. I just genuinely want to know your thoughts on this and I like debating people lmao.

As a catholic, just wanted to explain some stuff from my point of view :^) this is all in good fun btw, i’m not an extremist when it comes to religion and i believe everyone should be treated with respect and love no matter what they believe in, unless that belief brings harm to others. I wanted to start with the reason evil exists in humanity, and the reason why bad things happen. This starts with the first main reason, and it is that God knows it will all work out in the end. When I was young my father lost his job. It was a dark period of time where my parents worried for their abilities to take care of me and my older brother, and caused my mother to pick up the job she had previously quit to spend more time with us. My dad eventually picked up a job for the city’s electrical company, however his salary had decreased significantly. About a month ago he was promoted to CIO of that same company. God always has a plan in mind even when things seem the darkest. The second reason is due to original sin. Because of the deeds committed by Adam and Eve, every person is born a sinner. This is why the catholic church strongly suggests that you get your child baptized at a very young age if possible. If a baby is to die, baptism ensures they will die free of sin, ready to be accepted by god, however I believe that all babies go to heaven because thinking otherwise is just cruel. But even so God still loved Adam and Eve, therefore they were allowed to have children and continue to populate the Earth. So why do bad things happen if God loves everyone? Well, God could keep humanity away from sin and doing evil, as we are all born sinners, but this would have denied us free will. And true love requires free will even if it opens the possibility for people to commit evil deeds. God’s only begotten son Jesus Christ was crucified and sacrificed in the name of saving people from the powers of sin, evil, and death. He was resurrected and is now seated at the right hand of the father, and though sin and evil and suffering are all mighty and persistent, love and life won over all in Jesus Christ and we are still able to find love in ourselves even when overcome by the worst.

Honestly was not expecting Hume, Aquinas, the tripartite theory of God and the problem of evil to come up in here of all places. Currently doing philosophy to a higher level, so it's interesting to see what people think of those theories.
