Epic The Musical: The Circe Saga

Comments

This is probably already said but Hermes, one of my beloveds, is the chaos junkie of the gods

Luna

vi didn't fuck the police and eat the rich at the same time for you to say their time wasn't sexy

Ok, I regards to Hermes’ motives in helping Odysseus, the main one is that he is technically his great-grandfather if I recall right, but he is also the god of travelers, and is one of the few gods who do genuinely help heroes in myths.

EmberPanther

i cant remmember that for some reason how weird :)

Favourite Saga Time!

1) Hermes motivations: why not? 2) gods can't die so go ahead and call Hermes a fave😁

Phoenix Mackenzie

Fun Fact: the 12 long years like is a miswrite on Jorge's part it's suppose to be 10. Obviously that's not much a big deal but at the time people made jokes about it on Tik Tok.

Zora Brightwood

Commenting before watching, here are my 3 predictions for this episode: 1. Uncontrollable laughter at the “A Woman” line 2. Hermes and Cerci fueled Bi Panic 3. Laughing in agreement at Cerci calling men pigs Yep, I was right on all 3 accounts lmao

Puppeteer: I love the call and response in this song between Eury and Circe. It makes for an interesting tone for that’s different from most the others. Gigi’s animatic is also just… so gorgeous. I love their design for Circe. That full 360 shot while swapping between characters? So freakin good. Also the fact that Circe brought out a roasted pig for them to eat, girl. Wouldn’t You Like: A very catchy song, and again something we haven’t quite heard from the musical yet. So the reason Hermes’ design has shaded eyes is because his singer is always wearing shades/sunglasses. At least to my understanding. It also just helps give off that trickster vibe where you’re not really sure what he’s after. Also, Hermes is Ody’s great grandfather. So that’s a fun tidbit. Done For: Dude the flow for this song is so good. I love the approach that Circe and Ody want the same thing, to protect the people they care about: Ody with his men and Circe with her nymphs. The harmonies though! There Are Other Ways: Ugh, I absolutely love Gigi’s animatic for this song! I love all the little character details they put in. How Circe undoes and re-ties her hair, how she circles Ody, how the nymphs are weary when they see Ody but relax when Circe assures them it’s okay. The way the color palette changes when she mentions the Underworld, and the animation for the smoke, how it’s all sketchy looking. God, I could gush about this animatic forever. Again, I also just love this Circe design. She’s kind of has a lion motif happening. It’s really neat. The little drawing at the end that you missed with Ody missing his wife and Circe just looking so done is one of my favorite things about this already amazing animatic. It’s so cute and funny. And then about the song itself, that finally riff Talya Sindel (Circe) just belts out is everything to me. On top of them bringing Puppeteer back in? Someone sedate me. Also just how you hear Penelope’s little motif after Ody breaks free of Circe’s spell, letting you know before he says anything how he was able to resist. He just loves his wife so much and for a second there it almost turns into a venting session for Ody in which Circe is just like “what is happening?” But it’s Ody’s loyalty to his wife and the showing that he’s different than the men Circe has dealt with in the past (the ones that are implied to have taken advantage of- to put it lightly - her and her nymphs) that ultimately changes her mind and why she decides to help. I love this saga so much. My favorite of Act 1 for sure. Next up, the end of Act 1!

As someone else has already explained Circe is a minor Goddess and not a Siren. And the difference between Nymphs and Sirens is that Nymphs are essentially minor nature goddesses/spirits while Sirens are just flat out monsters with seductive voices and either mermaid like or bird like features.

BakaSama

Yaaaay! Great Grand Pappy Hermes here to save the day with drugs! But he honestly doesnt want anything in return, since Circe violated Xenia (hospitality rights) Hermes was here to help Ody set things right since a mortal versus a minor goddess/nyph what have you osnt exactly a fair match up

Callsign-Corgis

i like to add that technically gods/goddesses can't die, so you can say Hermes is your favorite without a worry. :)

Kassandra Vexus

There was one guy who died on this island but he was never brought up

I think in The Odyssey they largely stay for a while to recover/repair as well. Plus Odysseus is massively depressed, and finding belief that they could still make it home after all that happened isn't easy.

So let's get one thing sorted out: the Hellenistic Greeks had tons of gods, with the major ones being the Olympians. I bring this up because Circe is in fact a goddess herself, a minor one but a goddess nonetheless. Keep that in mind. So again, The Odyssey's main theme is detailing proper etiquette in regards to hospitality rites, and Odysseus' encounter with Circe is another story showcasing this. A key difference with EPIC is that it was rather rude as a guest to refuse your host. This was the main reason why Odysseus accepted Circe's seduction: refusing it would reflect badly on him. It also didn't help that Greek myths and tales are chock full of the horrible consequences of refusing a gods advances, so there's no telling what would happen to Odysseus had he refused. Also for some reason Odysseus and his crew stayed with Circe for a year. Neal Illustrator’s “Ruthlessness” actually presents a really good reason with the main mast being broken. Repairing it would take A LONG time, so them being stuck for a year makes sense.

EDHPlayer

I'm honestly surprised that neither Mosco or Elijah caught on to (or at least mentioned) that when Circe turned the crew into pigs, and the camera pulled back, there was the picture of a spider in a web on the wall behind her.... Or that the men were eating a pig brought to them...then they themselves turned into pigs. So...the crew basically ate ANOTHER man she had changed. DARK!!!!

Todd Lucas

We are weak to Gigi's design for Circe

Luís Pacheco

You can trust Hermes! He’s a helpful god, and Ody’s great something-grandpa. I think Hermes just wanted to screw with Circeits okay to like Circe! This is the only saga we see her!

jessie H

ANYWAY. “Wouldn’t You Like” is a banger and I love how “There are Other Ways” changes tones partway through the song.

In before all the comments being like “ODYSSEUS CHEATED ON PENELOPE IN THE ORIGINAL”, (and again, keeping in mind that there are many many translations and retellings and even the one we attribute to Homer isn’t the ‘original’) to say a few things. 1. It would not have been considered cheating in the Odyssey, so no. Taking aside that within the story it was explicitly told to Odysseus BY HERMES that he would have to sleep with Circe to satisfy her and save his men. Taking aside that in the time period men having sex outside of marriage was seen as pretty typical, add in the fact that you’re dealing with a LITERAL GOD and uhhh, you’re not saying no to that without facing dire consequences or straight up dying. If you’re lucky maybe the god will turn you into a tree. And that also doesn’t even get into how much you can even really offer consent in that situation! Which brings me to my real frustration when people use ‘Odysseus cheated on Penelope with Circe in the original’ like it’s some kind of “gotcha” because… 2. It just… so so misses the point of that section of the story. Odysseus is MISERABLE. Thinking about how much he wants to die. He just got SO CLOSE to home only to have it ripped away, then nearly ALL OF HIS MEN DIED. This part of the story, including sending him to the underworld, is about Odysseus finding the will to move forward, to even be brought back to life in a metaphorical sense. It is not him deciding to fuck off and take a sexy vacation with Circe. But people reduce it to that and it’s very frustrating. And I think the changes made here for the musical make sense with the story it is telling as well.

cosmotron

Oh excellent. Hermes *and* Circe time :3
