Epic The Musical: The Cyclops Saga

Noooo you were looking down and missed one of the best shots in the second animatic! Odysseus turns the sword and it reflects the Cyclops eye

I'd have figured Mosco was done having favorites when she saw how things go in RWBY. :) And yes...my favorite leaders are also Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Or as I call them...Felon 47 & the International War Criminal

So!! Cyclopse saga!! I want to preface that one of the biggest changes that Jorge did that clashes so viciously with the Odyssey is this saga. To start with; Polyphemus. So as mentioned before xenia is A REALLY BIG DEAL to the Greeks. It was a constant theme in the Odyssey and a source of so many of Odysseus’ boons (when xenia is upheld) and problems (when xenia is violated). In this part of the epic, when the crew arrived on the island, it was obvious from the start that this cave was someones home. Which meant it was in the domain of xenia. Ody and his crew waited patiently for Polyphemus to return and invoked his aid, as per xenia, to provide shelter and food for his crew. Now what happened? Polyphemus VIOLATED xenia. Instead of giving respite to the sailors like he was obligated to, he immediately sealed up the cave with a rock and started eating the crew. Now Epic? Odysseus is the one who violated xenia. He and his crew broke into someones home (even if he didn’t know its someones home doesn’t change that it was a violation of xenia. People irl don’t get a free pass for home invasion just because they ‘didn’t know someone lived here’.) Killed one of his sheep, and instead of APOLOGIZING, Ody tried to brush it all under the rug with “Yeah well, we killed your friend so have some spiked wine in return”. In ancient Greece, Ody would have been the most cancelled king out there for that. He is the one who escalated things. Blinding the cyclops!! What Ody did was a huge deal, you don't mutilate someone like that and not finish them off. The ancient greeks were terrible. They were misogynistic. They were racist. They were very ableist. Blinding the cyclops and denying a proper death was, by no fucking means, a mercy. So not only is sparing Poylphemus going to cause Ody problems in the future because he had to be a dumbass and dox himself, but he did THE CRUELIST THING POSSIBLE by blinding him but forcing him to live. So if you ask yourself when Ody becomes a monster: it's this saga. Now I will give Epic this: in the poem Odysseus handles the doxing aspect even worse, because Odyssey!Odysseus had some very important knowledge about who Polyphemus was that Epic!Odysseus does not have atm, information that would make any ration person think twice before mocking and taunting the person he just mutilated. (Hell, even in the poem, Polyphemus is blindly hurling rocks at them while Ody keeps taunting him and his own crew is going "What the fuck Odyseus, please shut the fuck up." - ["Hard one, why are you trying once more to stir up this savage man, who just now threw his missile in the sea, forcing our ship to the land again, and we thought once more we were finished; and if he had heard the voice of any of us speaking, he would have broken all our heads and our ships timbers with a cast of a great jagged stone, so strong is his throwing"] Book 9, line 494-450, his crew trying to explain to Ody that the more he taunts, the more at risk he puts the crew, not that Ody cares) Now My Goodbye? This song is in my top 3 for songs I absolutely despise because of how Jorge writes the gods. Musically its good, the piano is beautiful, the vocals are lovely. The lyrics and story make my blood boil. By no means, by no fucking means, should Ody have survived that encounter. You don’t talk to a god like that. You don’t treat yourself as EQUAL to a god. You don’t talk shit to a god. But that is a thing with Epic, Jorge really wants Ody to be seen as right up there on the same level as the gods, like they’re peers. When that’s not how it works. It also defeats one of the main aspects of the Odyssey: In the poems, Odysseus begs to know why Athena abandoned him, only for Athena to reveal that she never left him. That she had trusted and believed in him, knew that he would be fine, that he didn’t need her guidance and hand-holding to make it home. And while she wasn’t directly there at his side, she never once abandoned or left him. Now Polites dying here was another change. Not only did Jorge inflate his importance, but he killed him off super early. In the epic, he most likely survived to either book 10 or 12. So its hilarious to me that he was given so much importance only to be killed off immediately.
