2025-08-26 23:25:03 +0000 UTCIn Charles Addams's original cartoons (1938), Gomez had a somewhat grotesque appearance, with a tubby body, a snub nose, a crooked tooth, and a receding chin. So the current portrayal in Wednesday is actually closer to the real old "old school" version of the character. Addams had stated that Gomez's look was somewhat based on NY Governor & failed Presidential candidate Thomas E Dewey - look them up https://www.tumblr.com/baronvonkrieger/694137204936769536/how-hispanic-are-the-addams-family Addams sometimes hinted that Morticia & Gomez were not actually married. Most of the charm that later actors portrayed was based on John Astin's original 1962 TV performance which recreated & fleshed out the character. The Addams response to family situations is always going to be what "regular" people consider odd, strange or just plain wrong. That's the point of the Addams Family. Morticia cuts the heads off roses to make the thorns grow longer. Gomez shares his cigars with Pugsley. Parenting advice? Do the opposite! Run!
