Shelby Rabara, the voice actress for Peridot, is also an accomplished dancer, and actually provided the choreography and foley for the tap dancing that Pearl did in this episode!

I rewatched "we need to talk" and a line in her song is very telling. "I like the way you humans play, and I like playing along" I think it was a game to her, at least until she met greg, he wasn't her first boyfriend, but he was the first one she truly connected with. She found humans fascinating, but they were the local wildlife on an alien planet, not equals.

You play as a group of immortals, and there is a big focus on the weird phenomenon of falling in love, watching your family age and die, and then doing it again, dozens of times over thousands of years, and how that colors their approach to love and grief. There are a bunch of these melancholy short stories you find that detail the character's previous lives and loves, as they live undying and aging while the world dramatically changes around them. The main story is a pretty bog standard fantasy rpg, but it's such a fascinating little detail that makes the cast feel so alien and lonely. Must be that way for the gems too, living for thousands of years with humans that only live a hundred at most. You get the impression greg was special, but he was not Rose's first love.

2025-02-20 21:09:42 +0000 UTCThe line in "it's over, isn't it" is "the men" not the man, she's implying Greg wasn't the first human man Rose took an interest in across the 5000 years the gems have been on earth, but before they'd been more like curiosities or pets (which is how we see rose treat greg prior to "we need to talk" I gather she loved earth and humans but didn't see them as equals, so much as the cute and entertaining wildlife, she's part of an alien race that had conquered earth after all. Up to that point greg was less her boyfriend and more a friendly stray dog she's play with here and there. It's why she's so taken aback when he demands she talk to him "like a person" saying she's not a person, it changed her perception of greg, it's when she started treating him as a partner rather than a toy. This is made clear in the a line from the song she sings with greg earlier in that episode, Rose sings "I like the way you humans play, and I like playing along" "We need to talk" seems to be when she stopped role playing a relationship with a human, and developed a real connection. It's when greg became special, and when greg became a true threat to Pearl in the battle for rose's affections. ....i mean...probably so much of this is up to interpretation.

2025-02-20 18:45:55 +0000 UTCYeah, "Mr. Greg" is an all-timer episode for sure! Iconic and moving while still a lot of fun, because who doesn't like a full musical episode! "It's Over, Isn't It" is just one of those classic SU songs that just hit you hard every time: a simple solemn moment when Pearl thinks she's alone and can't help but sing her thoughts...but of course her thoughts right now are all about her helpless jealousy. It's beautiful and tragic, and Deedee Magno Hall just knocks it out of the park. And that animation, especially in that rotating shot! Stellar! "Both of You" really shows how much emotional maturity Steven has gained so far, as well as being just a fantastic little ballad. What matters to Steven, in this moment and in his life when it comes to these two people, is the love shared between them all...but what matters less is Rose's feelings. She's gone, so why can't we just move on? And of course, I will always gush about Zach Callison's singing and acting performances: it really only gets better from here, and it's already so great in this episode!
