Super Watermelon Island and Gem Drill
THAT WAS CLOSE!!
Omg your intro to this episode…. I never thought about the strawberry fields and why they were so big. Maybe it was Rose Quartz with her tears after the gem war. Tears from her fallen comrades.

That's if they fuse with unrelated shards, kinda curious now what about if they accidentally managed to begin to fuse with their own shards

Sorry, the shards are so damaged that they can't recognize their other parts. When they being to fuse with unrelated shards they form Geodes, mindless zombie gems.

That's just us having wishful thinking tho. The only reason we don't see shards on the surface anymore is mostly because it is thousands of kilometers deep underground. The cursed fusions we see were from the surface tests, not the ones buried with the cluster.

One of the most PHYSICALLY strong. I would say that the ability to straight up see the future is a bit OP, Sapphire just haven't been shown to be powerhouses the way Lapises and Quartz are.
Which, for a race that is so focused on colonialism, you think they would elevate brawn over brain, but from what we've seen, Rubies and Quatzes are sort of "common soliders", with Peridots being more engineers (Peri clearly belives she out ranks Jasper) and Sapphires being "inner court" and so the highest ranking out of all the Crytal Gems. The only reason Peri considers Amythest to be the obvious leader is because Sapphire is in a fusion, and a Fusion with a low ranking Ruby at that.
Okay, so spoilers from here down:
I also think that, just because of the way Gems are very much constrained by the hierarchial system, for as strong as Lapises are, they are not considered fighters. When we meet the other two Lapises, they indicate they are new to using their abilities in a battle. On top of the fact that Lapis and Jasper aren't in a fully consensual fusion, it coild be that Lapis lacks battle intuition and strategy, so Jasper is carrying them here.
It's kind of like.... You can do MAJOR damage with a car, far more than a human normally could, but we're trained to see cars as being vehicles with a specific, non violent purpose in mind and so most people do not associate cars with weapons, and we'd probably be fairly clunky trying to use it as one, as opposed to someone who grew up learning car-atie.

I considered saying slave, but since all the gems "are made to serve the Diamonds" (and a Pearl would be serving the Diamonds by acting as a servant/bulter, regardless of what gen they were assigned), it seems more just a result of the hierarchy than Pearls being slaves while other gems aren't. But I agree, it shares a lot of the same traits.
It explains why Peridot associates Pearls with a lower cut of gem, but we see Blue and Yellow Pearl acting with authority and all three of them acting somewhat sanctimonious/elitest. I just think labeling Pearls as just being low level servants doesn't capture their position in the hierarchy.
Like, one assumes all Peridots, for instance, are kindergarten techs and engineers, and for the most part are probably of similar "ranks", like how the Rubies were, where as Pearls attach themselves in part to their owner's "rank", so Blue and Yellow Pearl would likely see themselves as outranking another gem's Pearl. So while Pearls might be low enough to be widely considered servants who belong to an assigned Gem, there is a huge difference between a Pearl of a Diamond and a Pearl of a lower Gem.

same reason we have a bunch of nuclear weapons, some mix of paranoia and supposed preparedness. The gems are an imperialistic spacefaring race, they've presumably made lots of enemies. They probably want super weapons to use as a threat against rebellion and against resistance from new worlds they plan to conquer. It's less about a specific threat and more about just...having something scary up their sleeves at all times to chill dissent.
Kinda like the death star, it was less about fighting the rebellion specifically (the death star project started long before the rebellion coalesced iirc) and was more about Palpatine just having a giant boot to crush anyone who questioned his rule in the future.

which makes sense when you consider her role. She'd have to be tremendously powerful to do her job. (which hasn't been stated yet so I'll keep it vague, but it can be pretty easily inferred from her power set)

i'd imagine malachite is also severely weakened because Lapis and Jasper are more focused on fighting each other for dominance than Alexandrite, so she's fighting while very distracted.

somewhere between servant and slave. They seem to be treated as butlers/maids/attendants, but it's made explicit a couple times that they are the property of their masters, not in their employ. Peridot is a low member of the hierarchy as an engineer, or something of that nature, pearl was a slave/servant. So initially peridot is exhibiting the classic idea of low class folks punching down to make them feel better rather than blaming those above her, keeping her down.

She might not know her gems, but she's figured out that Rose, Amythest and Jasper are all quartz.
About Peral being "low in the hierarch", I think Pearls are like the equivalent to house servants; while they're servants, they're status is much more attached to their master's, and they consider themselves "higher up" than other servants.

They are a military fascist economy. They probably once had a real enemy they defeated. Now, as we learn from (spoiler) What's The Point Of Feeling Blue: they seek out new enemies before they become threats.

Notice we stop seeing attacks by shards after this though. The shard mutants are seeking out other gems, they may now all just being drawn to form with The Cluster now. they may have a way to let shards into the bubble.

it was an experiment i always took it as a 'i want to see what would happen if we did this' type of thing, plus after the rebellion and loosing earth maybe they want to in case it happened again so thieve got something to end it or at least use as a threat

We're probably not even seeing Malachite's true powers. Lapis and Jasper's powers are still manifesting separately. A true fusion would probably have an apocalypse crown or something.

Lapis took control of the entire world's oceans and made water clones and stuff WHILE SHE WAS STILL DAMAGED. For as much as Malachite is whaling on Alexandrite, those water powers could probably still be way stronger.

Peridot's heartfelt "Wow, thanks" is so special to me, cause she finally appreciates how much of a gift Steven's friendship is! I love that she allowed herself to be so emotionally honest and vulnerable with him, however briefly! She's growing!
I also love that the Watermelons worship Malachite like a god because she's watermelon-colored. I wonder how long they were doing this...

They were afraid they wouldn't get funding Combo, so they Rebecca Sugar stopped the show herself. She said that she might do even more with the Steven Universe series, but for now Future and the Movie was about all they planned.
They experimenting with fusion with the cluster. Yellow Diamond just wanted to destroy the earth, so after the fight with the Crystal Gems that were shattered they buried it and left. Figured they would let the planet get torn apart. I won't go into more for fear of spoiling, but it was definitely a planet destroying weapon against rebelling civilizations.

yeah, i guess you could call log date the finale of peridot's integration into the group, since that was the broad arc of s2 but...gem drill is so obviously the season 2 finale, clearly something went wrong with the broadcast schedule there.

seeing how it was made out of shattered crystal gems from the war I assume it was mostly just revenge against the planet for the rebellion. But yeah if the show hadn't been canceled maybe it would have been expanded upon

Now that I think about it, I feel sad for the shard fusions that were separated from the cluster (ones attacking the drill) since they're not fused to the cluster that are communicating with each other. They're still there beneath the crust separated yet alone at the same time.

One question they didn't seem to ask at the time was why did the Diamonds want/need a giant Geo-weapon like the cluster in the first place? Who was it meant to fight?

It really is! SU gets far too much hate about it's artstyle- It mainly stems from the character incosistences between episodes, but I never really minded those, as I actually love how each artist gets to bring in their own flavour! The backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous, unlike in any other show! The artstyle is vibrant, and the character designs range from the simplistic, chibi-like charm of Peridot, to the realistic, statuesque elegance of the Diamonds - All perfectly utilized for their intendend characterization! The show's art is so uniquely it's own, yet it remains consistently stylish and vibey throughout. It's a beautiful blend of western animation with a hint of videogame and japanese aesthetics!
