Steven Universe s2 eps21&22

The Answer & Steven's Birthday

I HAVE ASCENDED.

Steven Universe s2 eps21&22

Comments

I just realized Garnet starts the intro song with "We" because she's a fusion (probably not intentional, but if it is that's cool!)

Hulk Lover

Yep the answer is arguably one of the best and gayest episodes and everyone loves it! 😂

AZTEC NINJA

I freaked out when Hamish moved.

SweetCandle

Hmmm i see. I would understand a temporary change in pricing but a permanent oneeeeee? For the same frequency of uploads? Like i get it since we're ahead more but i also don't at the same time

peachy af

Yep. She did an extra episode last week so that Patreon would be ahead of YouTube by 3 episodes moving forward. Both SU and DT are now ahead by 3 episodes, and I assume Jentry Chau will be as well when that drops, provided it gets YT releases.

GalaxyMom

If it's just tmrw and Saturday like usual then whats the point of the price increase 💔

peachy af

Same- was a little sad to see that's not the case. But tomorrow!

Kayla

was also wondering

Luchendo

I had originally assumed we would be getting 3 SU vids a week from now on bcs of the permanent price increase, but idk anymore

Mizor

So are her SU uploads back to the usual Thursdays and Saturdays?

peachy af

Well maybe. Captured certainly, what exactly that would have meant is something we can only speculate on

Matthew Outlaw

First thought 0.5 seconds in: Hamish looks a bit different, LOL! Edit: I DID notice before you mentioned!

Angelus Lupus

Same. Love that I'm not the only who got to that conclusion

LikeCat

Mosco is like Hiccup giving Toothless the thumbs up lol

Stellar Kruize

Great video! You and your gf are adorable, have NO concerns about being adorable during videos ;) You two are definitely rivalling Ruby & Sapphire for cuteness. Keep up the good work! I love how so many of the shows you react to on your channel have such great lore behind them.

Tintros

I did the math and we've got 13 more weeks of SU reactions, give or take based on longer episodes. Hopefully she does the movie and SUF as well.

Gone

yeah, i think too many birthdays back in season one illustrated how it works, he is the age he feels he is, basically, and his body follows his mental state. I...think?

potato potato also another potato

sleeping beauty is what really comes to mind for me, all those sharp angles in the backgrounds and the dark color palette

potato potato also another potato

And from that point on, Garnet listened to Rose and stopped questioning things. Seriously: when she’s not “Cotton Candy Garnet,” her dialogue never has any question marks!

Timothy Heck

28:05 The Crewniverse said that a lot of the inspiration for the backgrounds in The Answer came from the work of Eyvind Earle. He did work for Lady and the Tramp and was the main background artist for Sleeping Beauty.

Arianod

My first kiss was seven years old and it was passionate and I can’t remember who it was was with bc it went pretty damn far from innocent luckily trauma got in the way

KassidySnakeyes

She brought it on herself, she gave you no choice in the matter 😌

Sekiro

This was my first thought when I heard her do the mosquito noices.

LikeCat

No, that was great! 😆

Sekiro

You could say its gonna be a ,,Mosco-ito"... Sorry, I see myself out.🤣

LikeCat

Mosco, now there are going to people who edit your hair onto a picture of a mosquito 😂

Sekiro

The writers have only stated that fusion represents different kinds of relationships (which CAN include sex.) Fans have issue with the fact that LOTS and LOTS of people (who hate the show) claim it's 100% about sex and nothing else and incorrectly claim that the writers have said it's sex.

Vilmu

There are also several people who straight-up lie and claim Rebecca has said fusion is sex. In reality, Rebecca has stated multiple times that fusion represents different kinds of relationships.

Vilmu

It is hinting at that. Rebecca Sugar and her husband are an interracial couple and the Homeworld Gems' hatred was (unfortunately) inspired by a real-life situation where some racist assholes harassed them and held her against a wall. Poor Rebecca suffered from mental and physical symptoms afterwards, but she got help with that later.

Vilmu

Yeah im surprised it was interpreted as an LGBT thing rather than that, i think maybe reactors that are POC (aka Scoot, he's awesome) would make the "mixing races" connection

peachy af

Jealous is an understatement on my behalf 😭😭😭

peachy af

"Her hair looks like cotton candy!" That's exactly why this form is referred to as "Cotton Candy Garnet".

ArcticBanana

First, again, you and Elijah are just adorable. Extremely jealous. Second, the whole aging thing. It's more on how Steven feels versus actual bodily growth. So while we normal humans can't stop our bodies from actually growing and aging, our minds do actually have an effect on how 'old' we feel. If you feel or act younger/stay excited for things/keep up with kids/teens, you tend to 'feel' younger and less worn down, as your body tries to keep up with those things because your mind says to do it. But if you slow down, let yourself feel every ache and pain and ruminate on it, you end up feeling older. Scientifically, this is what happens. You can't stop yourself from getting old, but it is partially a mental state. The show just takes this to the next level with Steven as the example. Also, is no one mentioning how Steven sees the future?!? Yes, sure, Connie being President. Perfectly fine and makes sense. He sees her as a go getter and changer of worlds. But he sees himself as 'first man'. You know. Married. Married! This teen already feeling like Connie is the one. Which she could be. And they are adorable. But when I first saw the episode, it hadn't clicked. On rewatches, it did. Wild.

WolfieOo

Personally I don't directly equate it because it's overly simplifying a deeper concept that embodies several nuanced things at once. Yes fusion can, in part, represent sex, but it doesn't have to and it's not a direct equivalent. Fusion involves a great deal of intimacy and most of the parallels with sex are also parallels with other intimate acts. Most of the time I would say they are more romantic coded than sex coded. There are, of course, certain lines and bits of animation, that invoke sexual comparisons in that specific instance but those always occur between characters who are older and effectively adults (nobody popping right out of the ground and doing it immediately, nothing with steven or connie).

Cloudcraft

it's probably a bit of both, and more broadly it's about stepping outside of your established role, hence peridot's bafflement at a pearl that can do engineering tasks etc. And, not that long ago I'm afraid, the scotus decision that legalized interracial marriage in the us is only 19 years older than I am, and I'm not much older than Mosco.

potato potato also another potato

7:39 I don't know what's more precious: Mosco banging her foot like Elijah did when she saw the Lumity kiss, or them doing the "Who cares?"-"I do!" thing echoing Ruby and Sapphire 🥰🥰🥰

Arianod

Mosco: WHO CARES!❤️ Elijah: I DO! 💙 They are Ruby and Saphire FR.

Alex

Really loving these reactions!

Antony Oscar

i feel like mixed fusion was hinting at mixed race relationships instead as they used to be heavily percieved badly a long tiime ago, even now if we count the multitudes of racists living in these modern times. but i guess you wouldnt be able to understand the concept.

Emi

anyone else think the blue, aristocratic, future seers, with a prominent eye: might be inspired by 40K's Navigators?

Tyrant-Den

Man these episodes were fun!!

Sirghostfreak

I love how you think anybody who’s a fan of Steven Universe wouldn’t want to listen to sapphics being mushy LOL

Megan Wells

True 😂

Sekiro

Awe, thanks! The collar isn't supposed to go that way 😉. Lol. Funny enough collars originally were designed to go that way to protect your neck from the cold. Either way, it's by far my favorite SU episode. ❤️

Link Chowschne

YES, it can be about FIRST KISS! So it means Fusion can be about ANYTHING between a relationship. That'll be up to you if you think of sex 😉🤣

Justine Herc Uy

To make it short: Fusions are about Relationships. So when the show is making it seem about Sex, that is because Sex can be a PART of a Relationship BUT NOT ALL relationships. So you CAN make it about sex but NOT ONLY sex.

Justine Herc Uy

Yeah I wished she went back a bit after pausing.

Justine Herc Uy

To explain why we refrain from fusion=sex talk is because bigots are using it as a reason to hate on the show. Steven is 14 and Connie is 12 so those dudebros on Youtube use it to call the show weird. Again, fusion = relationship and it CAN be about sex but focusing on ONLY sex is harmful because if WE gays focus on only that, then the homophobes will use OUR statement against us saying "eVEn GaYS sAy iT'S sEx, sO TheY ArE pEdOs CauSe StEvEn iS 14"

Justine Herc Uy

I mean it's not a metaphor for sex, but fusion is not not a metaphor for sex. fusing is about love of all forms, platonic, familial, romantic, and sometimes in romantic relationships sex happens. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, the writers can say whatever they want but they used it as a basis for adult jokes, they knew exactly what they were doing when they kept bringing up fusing

bloodyshadow1

In this house, we respect and support gem fusion ^^

Arianod

I don’t think most have said that fusion can’t be a metaphor for sex. At least, basically every post here only says that fusion doesn’t EQUAL sex, which is definitely true. It just depends on the relationship the show is portraying, and it’s meant to be a nuanced thing without a single correct answer. The reason it’s a sticking point for some has more to do with certain bad-faith interpretations of the show that got really popular. There were some very very loud sections of the internet trying to claim Rebecca Sugar is creepy for having Steven and Connie fuse, and things along those lines. So I think people being a little defensive about clarifying it is understandable.

There's something odd about Hamish today, but I can't put my finger on it... 🤔

Arianod

I think you missed the full "who cares" line. The full thing is "Who cares, there's TONS of me!" Ruby didn't see herself as being any different from any other ruby.

Cloudcraft

But anyone who claims Ruby and Sapphire are not super gay must be watching a different show

Courtney Boike

I always view it as: fusion CAN be analogous to sex/romance, but it is NOT exclusively. So what happens is people see any hint of a fusion and assume those characters are now being sexually paired together, which is decidedly NOT the case for some. What I like to emphasize, coming from an ace-spec perspective like Matthew on this thread, is that romance does not automatically equal sex and that there are many kinds of love and intimacy that are not romantic. And as the majority of these characters who participate or attempt to participate in fusion are either aliens who don't have the concept of sex or literal children (who have cute teenage crushes and nothing more at the moment), I think these are important distinctions.

Courtney Boike

7:45 oh...my gosh. These two. "Who cares?!" "I do!" accidentally referencing the Jailbreak Ruby/Sapphire reunion while watching an episode about them AAA

Jasmine

I mean The cluster is short for clusterfuck (not to be taken seriously)

Porpoise Power

I don't think you are 100% wrong with how the show portrays fusion. Early on the first examples that we see of it are the fusion dances that are very sexual, like the ones that result in Sugalite and Sardonix. But I don't think you are 100% right either. It's notable though that in 'The Answer', Ruby and Saphire's dance is more romantic than it is sexual. I think 'The answer' is as explicit a thesis statement on fusion as you could possibly want. The Key to Fusion is LOVE. Some fusions are explictly about Romatic Love, some less so. I think (speaking as some-one who is ace-spec) it is important to make the distiction that Love and Romance is not always sexual. And sex isn't always linked to Love. But I agree the show muddles the presentation of this a little bit. And any one who tries to claim that Ruby and Saphire aren't romantic needs to have their gem examined...

Matthew Palmer

I totally forgot elijah had a dog, I know i've seen it before in her videos, but it's been a while. All that fur must be brutal in the florida humidity. Hopefully she has good AC.

potato potato also another potato

that'll be a fun one too, it's filler, but excellent filler

potato potato also another potato

I think it's pretty exclusively because steven and connie are young so the analogy becomes a little problematic. As well as at least one other notable fusion. Fusion is absolutely an analog to sex. But rather than just, ignoring the handful of times that the analogy doesn't work, they instead insist it's something else. I don't mind instead saying it's about emotional intimacy rather than physical, but, it's mostly about sex.

potato potato also another potato

It's their song! ETA: I absolutely adore your icon

Mina Beavers

I've never gotten why every gets so upset when people associate fusions with sexual relationships. Like, sure, plenty of the fusions AREN'T romantic relationships, but particularly at the beginning, a lot of the fusions ARE metaphors for types of romantic relationships, so it's not like people are making it up based on nothing. They are literally just going off what information the show gives them. Eventually, they will get to the less romantic fusions and they will likely reinterpret fusions as they get new information, you know the way media analysis WORKS. Like, it's one thing if someone is asking or just saying that future fusions are different, but to bristle or overreact just because someone is going off what information they have is just ridiculous. For instance, the whole episode with Greg wanting to fuse with Rose. To insist that someone viewing that episode is wrong to assume fusions are a metaphor for romantic/sexual relationships when the whole CONCEPT of that episode is that Greg wants to be able to fuse as part of making their relationship "offical" and being everything for Rose is just.... At that point, you're getting mad at people for basing their perspective directly off what the SHOW ITSELF is giving them! And that (along with The Answer) is only one instance of moments where the show is clearly using fusion as a way to discuss romantic relationships. Besides, every audience member will have a different perspective based on their own life experience. How they interpret fusion is entirely up to them ss individuals. Getting upset about it comes across as though people want to undermine other'd valid interpretations and experiences. Also, I kind of have to say that so often people who get overly upset about people associating fusions with romantic/sexual relationships, it KINDA comes off like they just want to pretend that Ruby and Sapphire aren't OBVIOUSLY in a romantic relationship. Too often it comes off as a being defensive, as if they want to be able to like the show will ignoring the queer undertones. Why else would people get so upset over people assuming fusions are romantic at first? Again, just by waiting and allowing people to watch through the series on their own, they will start seeing more examples of fusions that are nonromantic in nature. When their main association with fusions is Garnet, Stevonnie, and Sardonyx and the associated storylines, OF COURSE they pick up on the romantic undertones. If they don't, they're actually going to miss out on one of the layers of the storytelling. But when people react to new viewers accepting the premise as presented by the show by insisting to the point of coming off as angry that they're "wrong" for assuming fusions are romantic (which, for the record, ISN'T EVEN WRONG. Just because not EVERY fusion is a direct one to one metaphor about a romantic relationship, does not mean that absolutely no fusion can ever be used in the story as a way to depict and talk about romantic relationships. What is gained from "correctlng" people when the episodes themselves are using fusion as a stand in for a romantic partnership? It really does seem like people getting defensive because they don't like interpretating Garnet as a gay relationship when, again, if you're going to claim that people associating fusions with romance are WRONG, you're ignoring a very obvious element of Garnet and how the show very much so presents Sapphire and Ruby as being partners.

Mina Beavers

Fun fact the record Greg was holding during the birthday was a shout out to Garnets VA

BaseNikon

24:30 we never gonna convince mosco otherwise are we? 29:30 i kinda love the joke about gems being naturally gay and garnet being straight Steven age was kinda a shock to the Fandom back then as the album confirms he basically dint change since 8 yo (to be fair he was kinda big for that age). this means he is fairly close in age to Ronaldo and Lars that.

Filipe Oliveira Ladislau

“Is blue diamond mor of a peacekeeper?” A certain kind of peace. Yes. You could say that.

A Magic Duck

Connie for President. 🇺🇸

Tasia Cooper

It’s too bad Gems don’t get married because then the shirt could say “I Support Gem Marriage”. Could you imagine a Gem wedding?

A Magic Duck

This reminds me of that woman who had cancer when she was like 8 and the medication they gave her stopped her from growing she's like 24 now but looks like a literal child. shauna rae is her name

LobotomizedBarbie

this is the spiciest reaction ive ever seen

Omegasigma

Connie for President, Fuck the orange bastard.

LobotomizedBarbie

Just wait until the diamonds fuse in the final battle with the crystal gems :P

Porpoise Power

Mosco went from person to bird to bee in the span of one episode lmao

ShadowFox1412

Supercut of every "I need answers!" 🤜😠🤛 since Jailbreak pleeeeease 🤩

Craig Rangoon

I love that the song Ruby and Sapphire hum is the melody to Stonger than You <3

Link Chowschne

DOAGGIE!!!

Nuk Limpear

They made a book (in the style of the Little Golden books) of The Answer! Also the Stella album Greg pulled out in Steven's Birthday is a reference to Estelle's (Garnet's VA) album, Shine. Looking forward to the season 2 finale!

Kayla Ryan

Pre-viewing comment: eeeeeeeeeeeee

Gone

My favorite part is the realization that if garnet never came to be, rose and pearl would have been captured and the earth would have been colonized by gems. The world was saved by love!

Wolfie

Everything she's been asking for since Jailbreak omg

Craig Rangoon

AAAAAAAHHHHHH

Ari

The Answer is one of those episodes that’s ALWAYS a tear jerker. When Ruby and Sapphire dance and Sapphire starts humming the melody to “Stronger Than You” it’s too much. Plus we get our first glimpse of Blue. We see Rose and Pearl in action and really why Garnet is so devoted to Rose. She’s the first person to accept their relationship.

A Magic Duck

Yes! We’re here! Finally! 🥳🥳🥳❤️💙🌈

Liam Gradwell

I'm so excited ommggg
