On the last adventure, he made it "edgy" and "cool" and "mature", in the hope that Zooble would like it. He was basically trying to impress the big kids

My comment is going to go into a very dark place here, so please consider this a cw for what comes next, but I want to share my insight because I think it's important to talk frankly about the topic.
Given the genuine smile while still crying profusely, I don't think falling backwards into oncoming traffic was an accident. I'm pretty sure this episode was intended to bring things like suicidal ideation/action, masking, and even possibly medication with it's many possible side effects into discussion. For example: if someone in your life suddenly seems happier, like a burden has been lifted, without an obvious cause, that *could* be a warning sign that they've made a decision and you should watch out for them.
Depression, and especially suicide, are heavy topics that are closed to my heart. Please watch out for the ones you love.
Also, I apologize to anyone for whom this was too heavy of a topic. But if we're too afraid to talk about these things, we can't combat them properly.

Thank you, AnakiK. I have not had issues for some years, now. The previous decades did leave a certain mental "muscle memory" if you will, that helps me relate to Gangle, though.

After seeing what happens when Gangle masks her feeling for too long, Jax constantly breaking her comedy mask might be doing her a favor.

Thank you for sharing your struggles. It does provide a new perspective into Gangle's character, and I hope you're doing better.

A disclaimer first. I have struggled with depression for much of my life, but I have no experience with bipolar disorder. Have not had a manic day in my life, so I may not know what I am talking about. That said, it struck me hard this episode that Gangle is not so much bipolar as they are masking their depression from others. I found myself relating to everything they said this episode with full force, to the point of tears. And there is a palpable relief, almost to the point of joy, when one is finally allowed to drop the mask. Her interaction with Zooble at the end rang especially true. True friends are what make anything barrable, especially when they feel undeserved.

See, there's this theory floating around that one of the humans might actually be an NPC (because of Caine's line at the end of episode 2, Chekhov's gun and all that - why would he say "who knows what might happen" if he loses track of who's human and who's an NPC if that scenario never comes up in the future?), and I'll be honest, personally I've been suspecting Gangle the most due to her Comedy and Tragedy masks (it's like Caine said, he doesn't have control over the humans' minds - so a character whose mood changes drastically based on which of her masks - a part of her digital body that Caine created - she's wearing seemed incredibly suspect to me). However, this episode completely debunked that, and now I feel like an idiot for not realising Gangle was *masking* this whole time (or for not noticing that the Comedy mask goes ON TOP of the Tragedy mask this whole time, for that matter...)

If you are open for more Youtube animated stuff: How about the 1 episode of "Space King". Its a satire to Warhammer 40.000.
Edit: A 2nd episode just came out. XD

One's the kind of shock/horror kind of hell, it's creepy and unsettling. While the other is a more subtle kind of hell. One causes panic and fear, the other depression and hopelessness. Frankly the latter sounds worse, because it's a grinding hell that breaks the spirit in such a way that it can be hard to fight.

The way I interpret it is that Gangle isn't actually happy wearing her comedy mask. She's quite literally "masking" how she feels. It's performative. Likewise, her "sad" default doesn't actually MAKE her sad. It just looks sad. Any control they have over her emotions is only control that she gives to them. Here she was driving herself crazy by forcing herself to be positive like she thought she was "supposed" to be. It's only when she thinks she's alone that she feels safe lowering the mask.

It's likely because the Circus only has one tongue asset.

The unicorn horn Jax mentioned is a reference to the Digital Circus promo comic in which Pomni had one. It's another clever fourth wall break.

One idea with Gangle, putting some of your concepts together: perhaps Gangle, like you said, wanted to be a manga artist, but was stuck doing shift work for low pay just to get by, and was depressed all the time as a result. She may have almost gotten killed by accident, but due to her depression, everyone assumed she had tried to kill herself instead.
Note that in his synopsis, Cain says she "went a little kooky and ran out into oncoming traffic," but we know that her almost getting hit by the truck was actually from her tripping on the step and falling into the road. And instead of correcting him, Gangle just went along with it, suggesting that maybe she thinks deep down that she might have actually tried to kill herself subconsciously?

I love that catch! That Jax might be doing Gangle a favor by breaking her comedy mask. And later in the episode he tells her that he likes her better sad, which we see that she likes herself better sad as well when she can finally take the mask off. I mean, going back to Episode 1 where he reveals he has keys to everyone's room. "You've all been fine." Is he taking care of them in some convoluted way? Tough love as it were? Later in the episode she mentions that her comedy mask is usually broken by this point. It's a strain to keep up the facade of being "normal".
I will confirm: "If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean!" is a commonplace managerial aphorism in the food service industry.
Zooble offering Gangle the mask in the first place may have been an allusion to a new med or a new outlook. That Gangle said it feels "normal". But we see in the end it didn't work, but Zooble is willing to help her try again. And until then, they want Gangle to feel accepted and loved as part of the group.
I am the Eeyore of my friend group. Low energy, depressive, typically low key. I've worked a variety of food service jobs, but my time at Five Guys stands out in this case. The job required we all be energetic, chipper, and positive. I am none of that, but I faked the fuck out of it to earn that pay and get those bonuses. So Gangle's allegory of putting on a mask really hit home for me in this episode. And props to the crew for really capturing the stark bleakness of a closing shift at one of these establishments. From the clinical silence to the "fuck my life" collapse you feel at the end of the shift.

I'm almost certain the tongue gag with Caine and Bubble was just meant to be a joke. I just don't see how either could lead to anything. I know you love to analyze these shows, I do too, but not every frame is meant to be taken seriously or has some fascinating deeper meaning behind it. Sometimes visual gags are just for fun.

Well, this confirms me never wanting to work at a McDonald’s. They made it even more Hell than the actual Hell in the previous episode. 🤣
Also yeah Mosco, I do see the Bi-Polar aspect within Gangle. Not to give too much, but my cousin is Bi-Polar and often she would have days where she is funny and outgoing and then days when she’s really sad and spiralling down bad. So if that is the case, I do like the whole mask aspect of Gangle that a lot of people go through when just being in everyday life. 💜

Gangle talking about drawing manga inspired comics (surely her dream since she like to draw) and getting isekaied at the end of the episode is pretty funny when you think about it.

Ragatha talking about packages falling on her head, tea parties and dancing lessons is a reference to the animated Raggedy Ann and Andy movie, which this show took a lot of inspiration from.

I know exactly what Gangle is going through. I can relate through my childhood experience. They are definitely bipolar, and Gangle specifically has a lot of what i do. Its Manic depressive episodes. Which is why Gangle specifically tells Jax it's a manic episode. Essentially the person will have emotional whiplash between being annoyingly energetic, and horrifically depressed.
The new mask represents medication used to level someone out. It makes you feel "normal" and you don't switch masks as much because its plastic, but it really makes you deep down feel worse, and not at all like yourself. Which is why Gangle is happy despite throwing the mask away. like ditching the medication. It's often better to just be sad than whatever "normal" the meds give you.
I also think Ragatha is a child, as she says she misses her horses, and that she had dance lessons, and tea parties. Like a child with over bearing parent.

One thing I also noticed that I forgot to add is that I realized that Gangle never once that the mask felt good, she only ever said it felt “normal”. When she requested for an adventure she requested an adventure that was “normal”. Just thought that was was something interesting to add.

I never realized how well Gangle works as bipolar rep, with the quick switch of emotions and depression. If that was the intention it is no joke the best rep I’ve seen, because as someone with a bipolar sibling, I get frustrated how little is, let along positive empathic ones. I also see Gangle as a potential autism allegory with the masking.

More Zooble is always appreciated 🥹
Also man that ending is good... I don't think Gangle needs a specific mask to be happy or to be sad...

I always hated when my manager at Wendy's (my job in college) & when I first started my current job always said that, "if you have time to lean, you have time to clean."
My guess is Ragatha might have been from rich family & owned horses.

HELLO MOSCO I'M HERE TO RAMBLE SOMETHING AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BIPOLAR. I've been speculating Gangle being bipolar for a while now, mostly because the tragedy/comedy mask IS one of the symbols for representing bipolar disorder! This episode basically confirms it for me that gangle has bipolar. The mask she wears, the sudden shifts in mood, AND her direct confirmation that she's having a "manic episode". The two type of moods in Bipolar is mania and depression, which are the key emotions she has in this episode! Therefore I think she has bipolar :)

I think the unicorn thing is just a throwaway reference the fact Zooble had a unicorn horn instead of one of their antennae in their introduction short.
