It's joke after joke and there's a lot of meta and 4th wall breaks. A great break to whiplash us into the sht that's gonna happen afterwards. Reminds me a scene in the Bismuth episode. hehehe

2024-12-14 05:49:55 +0000 UTCI actually like Say Uncle. It’s charming in its own way. I didn’t watch Uncoe Grandpa, but I used to babysit someone who did so I was familiar with the characters. The fact he was treated like the monster of the week was fun, and each of the Gems had a line that I just love: Garnet’s “That would explain a lot,” Amethyst tripping over the text and just hollering “WHY?!” and Pearl’s “That’s not my baby!” Honestly, most of Pearl’s bits in that episode were great, even her incoherent screaming.

2024-12-12 23:10:08 +0000 UTCin retrospect that seems pretty intentional, when we see her through stories she's portrayed in exaggerated terms though the eyes of the storyteller, when we see her in flashbacks she's more down to earth and just...normal. It's such an interesting way to write an absent character.

Most people, myself included, just find uncle grandpa incredibly obnoxious, that said, Pearl's descent into madness in response to his antics is pretty entertaining, i'll give say uncle that.

2024-12-12 22:34:19 +0000 UTCI haven't watched Uncle Grandpa, but that lizard dude seems chill and I've read that the realistic tiger has the personality of a stereotypical teen girl (she likes shopping, makeup and boy bands) and that's honestly amazing and sounds like a 10/10 character to me. And just for clarification: Amethyst isn't a literal child in the flashback. All Gems are created fully-grown and do not age. Amethyst is just very short and she had more childish style and behavior in the past.

2024-12-12 20:53:13 +0000 UTCStory for Steven is just great. It packs in a lot. We learn that Greg has always been a fan of space and giant women ("Oh here we go, how tall was she?") Right there with ya, buddy. We learn that Greg abandoned his career to persue Rose after only speaking to her twice (hey, remember that sci-fi romance novel we saw in his storage unit?) . We learn that at first Rose just sees Greg as an amusement/toy/pet ("I really wanna play with you") and we see a happy, close-knit family group she will ultimately abandon to have Greg's child. It's sweet and heart-breaking all at once. Pearl's "Hey, I can sing!" always gives me a chuckle. We know our girl Pearl gets jealous easily (remember "Strong in the Real Way"?) and here it is again. When Greg drives back to the beach we breifly see an election poster for Buck Dewey. We know this Buck can't be Bill's son from two episodes ago, so have to assume this must be some older relative. Perhaps we will learn more of the Dewey Dynasty further down the line...

I do like that when Steven goes to find the Gems they are in the middle of assembling some furniture, just everyday mundane stuff for a change. You can tell Amethyst is not big on following instructions from the state of one of the stools. Uncle Grandpa is a treasure trove of Pearl reaction gifs, but yeah, I don't like UG's voice either. It does feature the 9th variation of the end theme, basically redone in the style of the UG title theme.

It includes hints to major plot points too and just overall such a better episode than people who are plot-only tirants could ever appreciate it.

2024-12-12 18:56:26 +0000 UTCHey, yes there was filler but I did notice a few things; 1- Shirt Club; Those Guitar Lessons Don't actually go to waste, you'll see it later on. 2- Say Uncle; Steven actually has control over his shield after this episode so even though it's 'not cannon' he still can control it. 3- Story For Steven; Don't forget about Valadia Specifically, she doesn't have much of a character now, but she does show up next season.

Giant Realistic Flying Tiger was probably the best part of the show. She farted rainbows. That's how she flew. Then there was his counterpart Aunt Grandma who, following the rules of animation, actually resembled a woman as opposed to the homunculous that was the protagonist. Story For Steven is a sweet one. I love so much about this flashback! The "younger" designs are great. I love kid Amethyst. And even Pearl looks like an awkward teenager. But it's really sweet how the two of them met. Greg just... knew. The moment he saw her. This was the world he wanted to be a part of. Not just pretend he was part of.

Rebecca Sugar has gone on record calling the two "sister shows", due to being developed in the same office and the two crews socialising a ton during development.

If you hadn't realized already, "Say Uncle" was an April Fools Day episode. I just think it's goofy fun not meant to be taken seriously, and it really presents itself as such. I don't think it needs so much hate, but definitely not a necessary watch.

I'm guessing Cartoon Network requested this episode to try and drum up some viewership for it. I guess it worked because - bad as it was - it got five seasons. You could have just skipped it, really, we wouldn't have complained. Well, someone would have - it's the internet - but 99% wouldn't. "He's worse than Draco." Well, he *is* an agent...;)

Although I'm still happy to see reaction videos nonetheless. Edit: Does anyone else have difficulty hearing these videos? They're just really quiet and I have terrible hearing.
