I always loved the subtle character moment from Steven in “Rose’s Scabbard.” After Pearl said a genuinely horrible thing to him and ran off, one of the first things he says is “is she okay?” Despite him wiping away a tear, clearly affected by what she said, his first thought was about Pearl’s wellbeing.

Rose's Scabbard always make me cry. We already knew at this point that Pearl's controlling nature was an attempt to tamp down her anxieties, but now we know she's been freewheeling without Rose to guide her. She knows she's in uncharted territory without a compass, and is desperate for any sign. She's grieving deeply, in a way that perhaps the other Gems cannot fully appreciate. Then again, we also see another glimpse how much pain Amethyst is in about it when she gets angry at Pearl for claiming her relationship with Rose was more special than with the others.

Rose and Pearl's relationship is... complicated. There's a LOT of [redacted for spoilers] going into that assessment; but I'll say that you're definitely not imagining things with respect to Pearl's relationship with Rose being, shall we say, "unequal". There's a lot more to it, and "unequal" in this context doesn't necessarily mean what you're expecting, especially [REDACTED FOR MEGA SPOILERS]... it's a really thorny issue, with a lot of complicated elements. Suffice it to say, this episode is going to change how it hits you many, many times as more is revealed.

FAOD, the shorts are spoiler-free once you've finished season 1. The extended intro is cute and was originally a con panel exclusive; it's essentially the S2 intro with a lead-in, and does contain a glimpse of a character who's been mentioned but not shown so far. The Classroom Gems shorts spell out some foundational "this is what Gems are" info that's been shown but sometimes implicitly in S1 (and may answer a couple of your questions).

And if Connie being in a wedding dress here made you uncomfortable, just wait until the series AFTER the movie, 'Steven Universe Future', where Steven proposes to Connie! He uses the one last Cookie Cat he had saved in the freezer all these years, instead of a ring. Connie is naturally upset by this, and she rejects the proposal and dumps him. The rest of the series follows Steven struggling with clinical depression and PTSD, building up resentment towards and lashing out at everyone he loves, disowning Greg as a father, and even becoming physically abusive towards and even accidentally killing one of the Crystal Gems. His negative emotions from all this end up manifesting as a "giant woman" taking the form of Rose Quartz and rampaging through Ocean City like Godzilla, which is only stopped by all of Steven's friends and family giving Steven an intervention and convincing him to see a therapist.

You're not reading too much into it, Pearl and Rose were definitely a couple, which will soon be revealed to be the reason she hates Greg so much! However, as the show goes on the two of them eventually bond over their memories of Rose and grow quite fond of each other, and in the movie after the series, Pearl ends up falling in love with Greg! Amethyst gets jealous and shapeshifts into Rose again in an attempt to upset them, but it backfires, and Pearl and Greg fuse for the first time and proceed to fly around the room playing an electric guitar. It's pretty radical.

Except that half the fun of the "fake spoiler" rule is working in that tiny grain of truth. Like how, in the final season, Steven nearly transforms into a bird before leaving for college.

Garnet is actually a higher ranked gem than Rose. The appeal of Rose being a rebel leader was that she was a "low-class" gem. Sort of a Goku vs Vegeta thing.

Learning more about Pearl and Rose is one of my favorite parts about the show. I find so many of the character dynamics interesting. I am glad you are going in release order. No spoilers, but as someone who originally watched the series in release order, the pacing can be really weird with it to the point I even googled if I was watching the episodes out of order which is how I discovered there was a different intended order.

Man, Rose’s Scabbard is such a special episode for me. While I was already hooked on SU by the time I got around to this episode. It wasn’t until I watched Rose’s Scabbard that the show became an All-Time favorite for me. Beautifully written, atmospheric, emotionally raw, and impeccably acted. Although some Season 2 episodes come close, I still think it’s my favorite episode of the show to this day

I loved Rose’s Scabbard. I think what I like the most is how they show Pearl’s clear infatuation for Rose. Like you can see it from her eyes how she worships her and the ground she walked on and just how much she dedicated her life for Rose, even going against their own people. Whereas we don’t know the full relationship from Rose’s side. Pearl clearly thought their relationship was honest and open, but the Lion is possibly living proof that there was a side hidden from Rose to even Pearl. And the way she says how Steven reminds her of Rose and asks whether he remembers their time together. That is so cute. 🥹💜🌈

Yeah. In gem timeframes, it's like they "lost" Rose just a few days ago. That emotional wound is still fresh for all of them, and they are all handling it in different ways. The only one who's had what might be called a 'normal' amount of time to come to terms with her absence is Greg, thanks to the comparatively brief lifespan of humans.

Her actions in this ep weren't okay, but it's hard to imagine that she spent 5000 years with Rose in one way or another, and she's been gone less than 20. It's a fraction of a fraction of her life and I don't think people every really comprehend that. I love Rose’s Scabbard so much. It’s such an amazing glimpse into Pearl and Rose’s relationship and Rose’s personality especially. Pearl knew EVERYTHING about Rose. Was her closest confidant for thousands of years. And she still didn’t know about Lion. Makes you wonder what else nobody knows about Rose.
