Yeah, got to agee with everyone here. I think you read it as romantic when that wasn't intended. The most telling line was "I had someone there for me until she started hanging out with YOU." Greg and Amethyst were buddies but Greg's relationship with Rose pulled him away from that. (Your read was from a more mature mindset. Try to remember this is a kids show 😅) Also, I don't think Peridot was very interested in negotiating. She interrogated Steven and once she stopped seeing him as a potential threat, she was ready to smash him.

2025-01-02 01:27:46 +0000 UTCI don’t think anything ’innapropriate’ happened per se, but Amethyst definitely crossed a line back then turning into Rose. Greg told Steven the last time he and Amethyst watched the show he was really young, so it was not that long after Rose died. I always theorized that Greg had to pull away from Amethyst to take care of Steven and a similar argument happened. For Greg to see Amethyst turn into Rose in that context, with her death being so recent, it drove a wedge between them and they stopped hanging out.

2024-12-12 20:41:51 +0000 UTCI feel like you may have convinced yourself of something that just isn’t there, I don’t want to overexplain too much, but I think Amythyst’s habit of being crass and gross and using the word “junk” led you down a very funny path of dominoes which led to the impression of a romantic relationship, I’m trying to put this using only what you’ve already seen, and you have seen at the Kindergarten how Amythyst hates herself and has Issues. I know we’re always on the lookout for subtext, but I have seen and experienced this kind of situation where you’re depressed and watch 3 seasons of TV in a day, I really think confidently there’s a 0% chance Greg and Amythyst were ever romantic, I might go so far as to say it’s negative 100%

Greg seems to be one of the few people she doesn't feel judged by, and she is desperate to keep that. The bitter irony is that such desperation is the most likely thing to cause her to lose it.

She's not coming on to Greg, not really, she wants him to stay and hang and do their shared fun thing and be consistently 'there' with her in a way she doesn't feel with the other Gems. And that's what happened before, I think - she got jealous of him taking Rose away and took it too far. We do know that Amethyst - and the other Gems too! - tends to bottle things up and put on a goofy mask until the dam breaks.

2024-12-08 03:40:34 +0000 UTCI was gonna say, you know, I THINK the whole "I've seen your junk before" was just a throwaway line, buuuuuuut... if you wanna see the kinda cursed ships Rebecca Sugar can make, go look up the recent leaked sketches, lmao. AmeGreg isn't even the craziest combo she's thought of. Also I really do like how they HINT at it! We don't know EXCACTLY what their relationship was, but I mean... they were both close, they both lost someone they loved, they both had a lot in common... I can see how they might have tried looking to each other for some comfort and it didn't turn out well. The Steven-only POV can be annoying sometimes but I love the veery small glimpses we get into the personal lives of those around him, especially the adults.

I can see why the throwaway joke makes it seem that way to a lot of people. But to me this line "I had someone who was always there for me until she started hanging out with you" is the critical one. That is the feeling Amethyst has been bottling up and ignoring, not romantic feelings for Greg.

Rebecca has posted some other Steven Universe sketches, but nothing with content like that, so I don't think they were ever supposed to go public and Rebecca herself would not have posted them.

2024-12-06 19:43:58 +0000 UTCThere are an infinite amount of possible futures what Garnet does is she predicts what's most likely to happen which is easier when she knows the person {as in these behaviours / personality quirks make it more likely you will choose this path} with these limitations it makes it so Garnet doesn't solve everything - she's allowed to make mistakes, and grow. I think that makes for a much for fun character.

And it seemed to be an ongoing thing between them. So to me the sketches kind of confirmed the theory that something similar had happened with Greg.

I feel like she probably shape shifted into Rose while Greg was still mourning her to keep him around bc she liked him. And it went to far and really messed with his head.

We know she lived on her own for a very long time before Rose found her, so Rose would have been her first attatchment to another person. When Rose starts hanging with Greg, Ammy gets jealous and has never quite let that go. Mind you, the time Rose and Greg were together, plus Steven's life up until now is but the blink of an eye to a gem, so to her it's probably like it all happened yesterday.

I think if the line had any story implications, that they'd avoid that kind of thing in a kids show. But it was such a standout bit of raunchy humor coupled with intense emotions in the episode, I can see how it can send a misleading message.

My favorite passage, because I was in addiction at the time I read it, is, "The men of this town gave me spirits and let me drink until I fell asleep, and then they took my armor from me...I want it back, and then I shall never need spirits again." Cried so much when I read that.

2024-12-05 19:18:41 +0000 UTCI always struggled with this one, I get the reasons, i think...but all the same, Amethysts behavior here is...monstrous, in a way I struggle to quantify, I can't fathom forgiving somebody for that. I understand that it's meant to show how immature she is, and it's meant to be like a child lashing out cruelly when they can't regulate their emotions, that she doesn't mean it, and just lost her cool in the moment, but even so, it was really tough to get past the dislike of her character that this episode instilled in me going forward.

Since amythyst is younger than the rest and was basically abandoned at the kindergarten until the gems found her, I presume she saw Rose as somewhat of a surrogate mother, and was jealous when her attention turned to Greg, similar to a child acting out when a single parent starts dating. I think she was just feeling lonely and insecure, and attacked greg emotionally in a moment of weakness. I think she saw greg as something akin to a step dad, that she liked and respected him because he made Rose happy, not that she had a crush on him. So when they lost rose, they bonded in a somewhat volatile, but not romantic, way, to help with the grief. Also...when it comes down to it I don't think she's ever shown much romantic interest in anybody, she seems to treat steven as a sibling and the other gems as older sisters, and doesn't seem interested in humans in general, so there isn't much reason to read it that way.

My read was just that they’re trying to recapture the feeling of when Rose was still around and using each other to fill that void. If that weird, codependent behavior turned… physical? It’s open to interpretation. I think Amethyst just gets resentful when Greg tries to pull away and doesn’t 100% understand why turning into Steven is inappropriate. So then she just starts trying to annoy Greg because she’s definitely the kind of person who will accept negative attention if she’s feeling ignored or abandoned. Turning into Rose feels like she was just trying to do something so extreme that he couldn’t ignore her. And she realizes how bad she fucked up when she sees Steven’s reaction to her basically disguised as his dead mom as a prank.

I'm not 100% certain what happened during Greg and Amethyst's "Little Butler" binges, but the way it's addressed here definitely reeks of regrettable hook-up energy. I don't *think* that's what happened, but it feels like that's what they're alluding to. I think they bonded over these videos in the wake of Rose's passing. That Greg tells her to not do this again, means this is probably what caused the rift last time. Either she did it as a means of upsetting Greg (much like we see here) or a misguided attempt to comfort him. Instant regret. Made it weird. That Steven sees it makes Amethyst realize she went too far. Steven crushed the metaphor with his rant at them. "I get it. It's hard to deal with stuff from the past. You want to put it off because there's tons of it and it's really heavy and it means a lot to you, so it's hard to let anything go. But you got to. Because this thing is full!" Oh yeah! This was a New Years episode! Would have been more timely if you'd gotten to the Thanksgiving episode. Although you might get to that closer to Cinco De Mayo, which, coincidentally, is Steven's favorite holiday.

Man When Peridot creates her own kindergarten on earth using human agriculture to combat the crystal gems and invade earth is gonna be so interesting to see. And then the plot twist of the watermelon Steven's joining the fight and saving the crystal gems was so unexpected and good writing IMO. There power was so shocking to see. What a good finale for season one!!! I can't wait!

I think the implication is at least that they bonded after Rose died and used the show as a distraction from their grief + like Amethyst said, she resented the fact that Greg took Rose's attention away from her back when Rose was still alive (she said Rose used to be the one who was always there for her.) According to one of the show's writers (Matt Burnett,) Amethyst wasn't into Greg and they were just friends, but Amethyst was upset about Rose being gone and blamed Greg, messed with him and eventually went too far and lashed out. Greg has been shown to be uncomfortable with shape-shifting in past episodes.

Also getting more Peridot in Marble Madness is great. I didn’t think I’d ever like the character but once they reveal she’s basically the Gem equivalent of his niece, things get really fun.
