Future Vision & On the Run

Amethyst was WHAT!?!

Steven Universe s1 eps39&40

Comments

Screaming at the screen at the end. You don't have to go back! It's just more holes! Nooooo!

Ravange

I was listening to a Hunger Games podcast, and they mistakenly thought that Katniss' actual knowledge of artificial gems was sci-fi nonsense

Verdigree

Yeah. It was just emphasizing just how many gems were made there and how huge the kindergarten was.

Pikagirl

I don't know if someone alredy told you that but Amethyst's voice actress is the same as Vee from ToH

Sally

We just learned about Future vision and here Pearl appears from nowhere saying "Garnet said you would be here".

Markus Erdt

Even after watching everything On the Run is still on of my favorite episodes & I've seen it half a dozen times but it still makes me tear up probably more now because I love these characters

Film Vagabond

It's so cute that she's wearing her girlfriend's merch.

Marcy Wu

Hey, remember Garnet's joke at the end of 'Steven's Lion'? "We kept Amethyst"

Nuk Limpear

August 27, 2000... well, the first webcomic I started reading began April 1, 2000, so I guess that makes me ancient too. XD

Sanmei

It's funny because it's true ^^

Arianod

40:30 it’s just some ominous music, nothing to worry about 👀

Wolfie

how do you join the Patreon only discord? I can't seem to find it.

Peridot

Here’s the thing about getting answers in this show. We’re stuck with the mind and perspective of Steven. Which means, as long as the gems try to protect him from the truth, you’ll be getting protected from the truth. Don’t worry, the answers keep coming forever, up until the finale. This show slow feeds you, which just means each revelation is the hypest thing ever.

Gab Gab

yeah lmao, as someone who struggles with catastrophizing, Garnet's ability seems like a nightmare. also I love On The Run. any episode where Michaela Deitz gets to sing is top tier IMO 😤

Alp

Guys, I don't think Mosco is ready for the *really* heavy lore stuff to drop.

Arianod

"I drink coffee for breakfast" was WAY more funny than it had any right to be XD

Arianod

"I'm getting answers but they're giving me 50 more questions" welcome to Steven Universe Mosco.

Ferret

Not just good but ADDICTED. must've been nice to be locked-in on one outcome with no edge-case surprises for once.

Craig Rangoon

I love on the run. Its one of my favorite amethyst episodes.

Jack

While I'd typically agree, especially since the crew was clearly referencing that short story in this episode, I don't think it's doable for Mosco with her trypophobia. (Not to mention the body horror themes on top of everything else in that short) But to everyone else, definitely check it out!

TXOT

I haven't thought about that webcomic in years.

Erin Cobb

And story just gets more interesting, terrifing and.... Well all the way more complicated from here. Have fun Mosco. (And to anyone who is watching this show for the first time and is figuring out the story as she watches it)

LikeCat

Right as the fog clears and the scale is shown

Phoenix Mackenzie

Well "kids"

Phoenix Mackenzie

Kindergarten literally means "Kid Garden" The gems just take it literally, they're growing kids from the earth.

Ashley Minor

Lol, ancient. I guess that makes me ancient too. I actually followed that webcomic, RPG World, regularly back in the day, it was my favorite webcomic. I was a regular in his forums. When he had to prematurely end it because he was entering the animation industry, I was a little heartbroken, but I was sure he would go on to do great things. Fast-forward several years, he co-created Steven Universe and put a little easter egg to RPG World in it, and I couldn't be happier or prouder of him. Later on, he went on to create another show, OK K.O. on his own, and it's also really good. They even made one episode that took the characters from his webcomic and gave it a little conclusion, complete with a comic page at the end that gave Hero and his girlfriend a happy ending. I got to meet Ian Jones-Quartey a few years back at a convention, and I printed out that final comic page as a poster and asked him to sign it for me. Anyway, that's my story about my connection to the co-creator of Steven Universe.

Craig Rangoon

💡"Injectors"

Craig Rangoon

i forget just how raw Amethyst's emotions are in on the run. that corrosive mix of self hate and anger.

Willow Arkan

the way she talks sounds a lot like what some kids from unplanned pregnancies can feel like

Willow Arkan

If you look at when they arrive, you can see where the grass dies, the colour is gone from the land and there are animal bones

Verdigree

That was just a spooky sound effect

Verdigree

“I’m pretty sure that’s a Play Station character” Interesting fact: it’s not. Most people mistake that figurine for Cloud from FF7, but in actuality it’s a character named “Hero” from an ancient webcomic called RPG World that was made by Ian Jones-Quartey, who is married to Rebecca Sugar.

Matthew Abbott

The Enigma of Amigara Fault by Junji Ito is required reading after this episode, but don't read it unless you have your therapist on speed dial.

Panic Blitz

so by now people have mentioned that the noise at the end of On the Run was just to highlight the scale of the kindergarten, but to narrow that more specifically it shows just under 400 gem holes in the mountains (396 when I counted, but I may've lost track while doing so for hopefully obvious reasons)

Tiporax

At least 10 questions for every 1 answer 🤣🤣

Phoenix Mackenzie

Fun fact: the word "kindergarten" is German and means "children's garden." The Gems come out of the ground. And now that we've got to this point and you know Gems are artificially created, here's a few Gem facts confirmed by the creators: They are all created fully-grown. Children are not a concept in their culture. Gems are also sexless: they don't have any kind of private parts, and only do if they specifically choose to shapeshift them. For example, Rose clearly has breasts, but Gems normally do not. The creators have also confirmed that Rose created a womb to have Steven. Good for her.

Vilmu

At last we got some lore, and Mosco, you watched it best you could. Respect. 👏👏👏 But like she said, we get one question answered, 50 more questions come up. We need more information! 🤣💜

Liam Gradwell

Ducktales and dragon prince will be back in a month or so, they've just be preempted by other shows returning. Once we get past arcane and presumably the november episode of helluva boss, ducktales should come back.

potato potato also another potato

yeah, it's when I remember finally feeling like I understood, at least on some level, what was going on with the broader story arc, and it's when I threw out a theory I'd had since Mirror Gem (which was very very wrong) that had been distorting my view of the gems, garnet in particular, and their role on earth.

potato potato also another potato

Just wait till you meet the quintessons, then things will get fun

Omegasigma

"It's me siiiized!" those who get that reference can't help but give horrified laughter

cosmotron

Future vision gives such an amazing g insight into Garnet and how she’s able to stay so cool and calm for someone who’s first solution to most problems is “I’m gonna punch it”.

A Magic Duck

cartoon network studios still exists, it's just kinda been absorbed by warner bros animation and has a reduced output since WB is focused on...destroying things for tax breaks? It's a whole thing.

potato potato also another potato

"On the Run" is a great episode: finally we get some idea of why the Crystal Gems team was formed - and we get a big slice of Ammy's backstory. Looking at the CGs as a family, Steven finds out his youngest older sister is a foundling! Answers! Questions! Spin Dash! Emotions!

Albedo12

"Future Vision" lets us know that all those times in previous episods Garnet was giving confident laid back support was because she'd taken a peek and already seen things were going to be OK. It also makes the moments where she's not relaxed waaaay more interesting, because you know she must have been caught off guard. Did she know how quickly Steven was going to figure out fusing? Probably. Did she know it was going to be with Connie? Her genuine beaming delight suggests that this was not on her radar, or at least a very unlikely future.

Albedo12

it suddenly occurs to me that THAT is why she's so good at that rhythm game she got addicted to early this season.

potato potato also another potato

there are many many gems, if it wasn't obvious, as you can see the place is decolate and just dirt, keep that in mind when they talk about 'bad things', I think this topic comes up in season 2 so you'll have to wait a while. also you talking about tryphobia made my tryphobia act up lmao.

icy

"I drink coffee for breakfast" is such a great line... And it's amazing how Amethyst's character development went from practically nothing to probably the most well developed of the Crystal Gems.

Carabas

Garnet's three-sided gem refers to her three eyes. Just wait 'til you find what she's got four of!

Albedo12

The way Amethyst is excited for her hole is a nod to junji ito's the enigma of amigara fault. Those with trypophobia will probably get triggered by it.

Cyren Cooper

Future Vision is hinted at in a few previous episodes. Another example of the great writing of this show.

William Timmins

Not to worry; the noise at the very end there was just that: an ominous noise. Nothing was seen on the screen.

Stephen Mumford

So fun(-ish) fact, the aesthetic of the Kindergarten is likely inspired by a short story by Junji Ito who is a famous horror mangaka (manga author). Without going too much into detail about the short story, it's about people who discover person shaped holes in the sides of cliffs. It was a VERY disturbing read.

Nicrocon

"I'm getting answers it's just given me fifty more questions." Welcome to Steven Universe!

David Johnson

Another amazing pair of episodes. Steven gets Existential Dread +1! As a Catastrophist, the message behind "Future Vision" really hits home. Sometimes we sit here obsessing over everything that could go wrong and we just freeze up. It's not a way to live. Things are gonna go wrong. That's just a fact of life. The best you can do is make good choices to mitigate the damage. It's pointless worrying over what's beyond your control. "On The Run"... hurts. It's the first time we see that Amethyst has a serious side. Imagine living with that. It's why she doesn't feel at home. She's constantly reminded that she is "the other". We see it as Pearl is off-handedly telling Steven about the "bad Gems" and Amethyst is taking it to heart. Pearl never meant it that way, but you gotta imagine all the times Pearl has said stuff like that in earshot of Amethyst. That... hurts. I think a lot of us have been through something like that.

Joey Quixote

On the Run is one of my favorite episode of the whole show. And I laughed when you said that every question you get answered just leads to more questions. Welcome to SU lore! Nothing important happened at the end. Just creepy vibes and holes as far as the eye can see.

Emily Brown

I will say the next two EPs you should really take in and enjoy. After them it is all downhill from there. Hehehe *insert ominous laughter* 🤭😈😇

PinkPonytail _Girl

Yeah that’s fair, I also don’t like gross humor Amethyst is my favorite because of her arc in the show! I won’t get into it for spoiler reasons but she just hits close to home for me (in very specific ways because I don’t act like amethyst at all) it’s mostly just the self worth stuff and a lot of how she feels and how she deals with issues later in the show

ServerGlitch

On the Run is one of my favorites! I was looking forward to this all week. Great reaction as always :)

Dragonmaiden

So I can’t say much without saying anything that will be explained later but what I can say is that Pearl meant that she sees the kindergarten and stuff associated with it as bad and Amethyst as the only good effect of it

Ratataj

Oh my gosh! This is what I love about this show, I have rewatched Steven Universe well over a dozen times and I never noticed the fog clearing to see the hundreds of gem holes and many more 'machines' (I know what they are called, but idk if their name is a spoiler).

PinkPonytail _Girl

As for the end of the EP, it was just a dramatic ominous shot of the Kindergarten, designed to give suspense and make fans draw their ttention to and question the concept of a Kindergarten.

PinkPonytail _Girl

I think On The Run is the first episode we get a direct answer about what the Crystal Gems are doing on Earth. Before they kind of best around the bush with a "Oh we protect Earth" vague response, but here they say WHAT they're protecting Earth from - invading Homeworld gems. This sound design is so well done too, it really gives a creepy and ominous vibe. This is honestly one of the best s1 episodes in relation to both lore AND character relationships. I love how Pearl reassures Amethyst that she's not to blame for what others have done and that her family loves her. It's such a sweet moment between two characters that are usually at odds with each other.

vivian xavier

On hiatus cuz of Vox and Arcane

Kayla Ryan

I honestly love how mature steven is in On the Run. And i love how since he knows Amethyst better than arguably anyone else, he knows it wasn't up to him to help amethyst. It was up to pearl. He firmly told pearl "you have to talk to her"

xman t

For the scene at the end, the fog simply dissipated enough to show just how many holes and machines there were (a metric fuckton)

Kris Grimsley

I was going to say "I never liked Amythest" but more accurately, "Amythest is my least favorite of the main gems, but I still like her". Still, of all the reasons she isn't my favorite (I don't like gross humor, she comes off as too much of a bully sort of older sister where I'm more a Peral/L/P mix) this begins when we really see her grow and her character arc is amazing.

Mina Beavers

We love Steven Universe songs and how trauma typically follows! Lol song = trauma in Steven Universe. 😂😂😂

PinkPonytail _Girl

I honestly thought Garnet never came to get him, Sadie and Lars because she saw he would be fine. I don't know if Garnet is always looking into his future, but I think as long as he's safe (even if, say, lost on an island) she allows it to happen.

Mina Beavers

Future Vision contains a ton of video game references. XD The one that took me the longest time to remember is that every time Steven is reduced to a skeleton, the animation is based on Ghosts 'n' Goblins / Ghouls 'n' Ghosts.

Sanmei

After bits and bits we get our first big heaping scoop of lore! And yep, it leads to even more questions.

Chet Bliese

what happened to reacting to Ducktales?

John Bossert

This isn't too much of a spoiler, but, yes. Every (type) of gem and fusion has their own unique abilities. But there's like a lot more than that.

Mina Beavers

“maybe he’s better of not knowing” don’t say that! that means you’ll never get the answers either 😂

luviemoo

This is so heart braking I wish I could give Amethyst a hug

Jeal Tar

it’s time for one of the reasons why amethyst is my favorite gem >:)

ServerGlitch

0:56 "we never get any answers" She spoke too soon in relation to 'On the Run' 😂😂
