Steven Universe s1 ep35&36

I've seen this series around 10 times at this point. I lost my mother last year and this first episode hit me like a truck. You are so right. Please don't take your loved ones for granted. You will look back on every part of them and ache for a chance to have it back once they leave you. I think you might have misheard Rose a bit in the For Steven tape. She didn't say that half of her would be half of Steven. She said that SHE is going to be half of Steven. Meaning her whole will be making up half of Steven. Steven has her entire gem, after all. 😉 (it's like how we are all half and half each of our parents. We have all of their dna, just mashed together) Also, as far as fusion goes. It CAN be a sexual thing, or at the very least a passion thing (becausethe gems don't really have sex or real genders). But it doesn't HAVE to be, is the main thing. Fusion is about relationships and therefore can be as unique as all relationships are, be they platonic or otherwise. Also also! I saw this series WAY before She-Ra and so that voice is 100% Stevonnie to me lolol And I actually never put it together that is was Catra's voice at all until you said something 🤣

I'm loving your reactions because it's exactly how I felt watching SU while it was airing lol CN treated the show terribly and had a bad airing schedule, especially after s2. So there would be months-year waiting on new episodes for the same season. It's definitely a show best enjoyed as a binge :)

The reason Garnet says that it's not hard for her to fuse is because later on it's revealed she's from a separate caste of gems who focus their entire culture on fusion so they spend thousands of years training to be able to fuse with anything.

Coming back to this, I think fusion could be seen as analogous to a relationship. Some fusions are very good for some gems and terrible for others, not necessarily because the gems themselves are terrible, but they bring out bad parts of each other. So when Pearl said Sugilite had been fused too long, I think it's because Amethyst and Garnet's individual issues had fed into each other until they blew up out of control. I think the length of time they'd spent fused was less of a concern than how their specific fusion is, as Pearl put it, "unstable."

Love your theories, but for the rose bit, you're overthinking it. Remember for gems, the gemstone IS them, their bodies are just hard light projected from the gem. When Rose said she was going to be half of Steven, it was that by giving him her gem, all of her would be half of him (Because he's only /half/ Gem)

Lion's mane is the first indicator that Rose had portal powers. That's how Pearl finally gets back into space, when Stephen figures out how to make new portals to other worlds.

Yeah, they threw a curveball at you, if the show was more formulaic, we would have gotten the fusions of each pair of gems before doing anything with Steven, but Surprise! I'm gonna be super cryptic and not say what this is about, and say that while your theories are off, you're asking the right questions. Hehe. Except about that "other half of Rose" thing. You misunderstood Rose, all of Rose + DNA from Greg = Steven. So, Rose becomes "half of you". Also, I now really, really, really want to see some artist draw you and Elijah as a fusion!

And Rebecca Sugar says fusing is more of a metaphor for relationships in general, including platonic. And this episode is meant to be about exciting and nerve-wracking firsts in a relationship.

Absolutely love Lion 3. Tears. Every time. I remember just feeling ambushed by this one, the feelings building when Sadie whispers "Steven... thats your mom!" Ugh! That whole sequence is so good. I love how AJ was able to speak as two different people, but as one. I'm sure by now you've rewatched this a couple times (and maybe again with Elijah) and picked up all the nuances. But all the fake spoilers about She-Ra and Catra and people using the word "experience", now you know.

Man, I can’t believe how close Mosco already is, to calling the season finale! Where Steven and Lion fuse, but then they Unfuse into a fully formed Rose Quartz and a Gemless now fully-human Steven. But yeah, that’s how the whole series ends! Steven looses his powers but gains his mother back from death. Very poetic. :’) (Also, Stevonnie uses They/Them pronouns only! FYI. ;3)

Alone Together cemented my interest in this show nearly 10 years ago. Seeing SO many important themes rolled up so well into 1 short episode convinced me that the Crewniverse knew what they were doing. Also, it's funny seeing folks react to earlier shows after having seen later ones because, as others have already mentioned, I couldn't watch She-Ra and not hear Stevonnie whenever Catra was on screen, or Vee on TOH and not hear Amethyst.

Stevonnie is non-binary and intersex, and uses they/them. While AJ does largely use the same voice, it's still quite a difference with Stevonnie having a very innocent and friendly personality (if you're not a jerk to them,) while Catra's such a cynical bitch lol. There's some inherent intimacy with the way you have to trust your whole being with someone else's during fusion, but fusion is a metaphor for relationships in general, including platonic. With Gem stuff there can be a lot of variety with the metaphors, since literally Gems are quite different from humans. According to Rebecca Sugar, Alone Together is a metaphor for the terrifying firsts of a first relationship + the sudden feeling of going through puberty and being objectified because of your changed body despite you internally feeling the same (the other characters are attracted to Stevonnie, but they don't understand what's going on.)

I double checked and sure enough, it is the same voice actor. *i believe the gate is just the door the gems use to get to their respective rooms in the house, the house just hadn't been built yet.
