Steven Universe Episode Order Poll

Hey folks, so I've been seeing and hearing a lot about the Steven Universe intended episode watch order. Apparently (much like Ducktales) the episodes aren't numbered correctly.

Here's a post explaining things: https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/3mudsq/steven_universe_episode_order_issues_masterpost/

So my question for you, do you want me to stick to the episodes in their numbered form, regardless of how the creators intended the show to be viewed? Or do I go by the order contained in the reddit post above that others have advised me to use?

Comments

I would suggest trying Say Uncle when you get to it in the new order, but for the love of God, do NOT go into it with the expectation of seeing a normal Steven Universe episode. If a normal episode of SU is a healthy, well balanced meal, Say Uncle is a plate of crack cocaine.

And it is also kind of canon. Something does happen in it which I hesitate to spoil that affects the series from that episode forward.

IN THIS HOUSE WE APPRECIATE SAY UNCLE

it has some fun moments with the gems, but it's really hard to get past my deep seated dislike of that show. Could be fun to watch mosco react to it's...just baffling weirdness though. At the rate we are going it might line up well with april fools too, given that's what it was intended as. (though I have no idea if april fools is a thing in scotland)

i guess the issue was scheduling shenanigans from cartoon network forced a handful of late season 1 episodes into the start of season 2, so you just get this weird stretch where nothing is really happening storywise.

it really does explain why the start of season 2 felt so off to me when i watched it recently. The pacing gets thrown way off by those 4 extra episodes being out of place.

I watched in numbered order a few weeks back (currently mid season 2) and agree the intended order is better. The numbered order basically has you watching a bunch of late season 1 filler episodes right in a row at the start of season 2, which felt hugely disruptive to me. All but one are quite good, but it still interrupts the flow of the story in a pretty major way. Assuming you are watching the same uh...illicit version of the show I am, the other stuff mentioned in the reddit post seems to be in the creator order already, i think? I didn't want to look to close given I've already seen one late season episode title that felt like its probably a big spoiler. Also, I second the asterisk in the post. the episode say uncle (s2e3 in the numbered order) was a april fools crossover with another cartoon network show that...I at least, LOATHE, it's non canon and generally not worth your time. You may like it though, who knows.

Yep! Looking through it, definitely recommend the “Reddit” order. Some are not too important changes, but some are! (Especially that “Steven week” bunch, that should NOT be in S2! What?) Also, just keep an eye on the s3-5 orders. And keep sure to go by RELEASE date on THEM! And not Netflix, etc, order. 0_0 (You starting this series made me rewatch the series again, and 4/5 are on Netflix, so I started to switch from “other sources” to Netflix from s4, in attempt to support the show as much as possible but… the order… is criminal. Especially in those later seasons where everything gets more and more sequential). Seriously beware… but also have fun! 🥳

Unpopular opinion, but I actually and unironically love the Uncle Grandpa episode. I never have nor ever will watch the other show itself, but there are some BANGER lines in the episode. (The urge to start quoting off ones here be so strong). ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ

Honestly that’s fair but the piece of foreshadowing is so niche it’s unlikely to actually register in most people’s minds. Hard agree about it being a fun silly episode though!

Regina Diana

Disagree about Uncle Grandpa, she shouldn't skip it. It's silly and it does have one little piece of foreshadowing in it

As someone who initially watched the show in release order and then rewatched in creator intended order, I have to say the intended order is both more emotionally impactful and creates a more cohesive storyline for the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2. I was definitely planning on commenting on this already after you watch the midseason finale but I’m glad you were already aware of this! Also for what it’s worth the list of episodes on Wikipedia are in intended order if it helps you keep track of what you need to react to next! (Also you can go ahead and skip the Uncle Grandpa episode, it’s non canon and doesn’t really add anything to the story anyways lol)

I just watch shows in release episode order cause thats how everyone typically experienced them, but you can mix it up, heck I wasnt even aware there was a different order for the show

Absolutely use the order the creator recommends. Rebecca Sugar and her crew put a lot of effort into the continuity, which will become very important soon, and it just flows better this way. The way they're ordered otherwise, you get a couple season 2 episodes in season one, which definitely doesn't make sense.

Dan_Gaming_Fan

Definitely the creator recommended order. It might not seem like it yet, but continuity is *very* important in this show.

Matthew Abbott

The Crewniverse put a LOT of effort into continuity, especially around the middle and end of season 1.

I didn't know about this episode issue before, but now having looked at the modifications, they do make a lot of sense narratively. It will, however, take more work on your end to split up the episode segments and does run the risk of you accidentally hitting big spoilers. A majority of these changes would take place between episodes 45 and 62, so it would affect 9 viewing segments total, 10 if you're flipping around episodes 36 and 37.

It's fixed now, but when Netflix UK first listed season 5 they put the episodes in production order, so the season started with eps 3 & 4, followed by 1 & 2. Given that they actually form a single 1-hour special, this was pretty terrible! It also meant about six other episodes were misplaced.

Albedo12

I never knew this was a problem even if you follow episode numbers. If you think this is bad you should see how Amazon in the UK breaks up the show. Episode order is random and it has 20+ seasons. (Censored episodes too!)
