Coraline Full, Uncut, Early reaction

Comments

I taught the book back when I was a teacher. The end of the movie has the cat vanish behind the sign. It alludes that they still have the other world influence over them or may still be trapped there in some capacity.

I think you would also REALLY like two other movies from this studio: Kubo and the Two Strings and Paranorman. Both INCREDIBLY well told stories, though no as dark as Coraline. But this studio has such an incredible sense for atmosphere and storytelling that I simply adore. I always check out their work whenever I get the chance.

My mom took me to see this as a kid, I remember begging her to leave and she told she already paid. Sat through the whole thing. Now its one of my favorite movies of all time. Scared the crap out of me as a kid but I love it LOL

The thing with Coraline in the beginning is that she's just moved to the middle of nowhere in another country away from any friends she'd have made. Also, her parents are apparently trying to support their family as gardening bloggers, which... good luck with that. So, Coraline starts as a lonely, somewhat emotionally neglected child who is likely going to be easy prey for a "kind" stranger with "candy."

You should also check out ParaNorman

Originally this was going to be a musical with songs by They Might Be Giants, but there was a change of plan so all but one song was dropped - the one the Other Father sings to Coraline. To date, as far as we know, only one other song has been released, "Careful What You Pack" on the album "The Else".

Beldam is an old word for an old woman, sometimes an evil one, sometimes an evil spirit in the form of an old woman.

Fun Fact: This movie came out around the time my cousin Caroline was born, and for the longest time I kept mixing up the 2 names despite having not seen the movie at the time simply because I heard part of Other Father's song from a trailer.

DoctorAlakazam

stop motion can be creepy when done right and it unsettles me, especially weird clay figures, but when its done in a charming way I dont mind it... too much lol

I don't want to say too much about Kubo and the Two Strings. I went into it blind myself, which is the best way to see it. It was produced by Laika, who also produced Coraline. The stop animation is mind boggling. It's a fantasy story set in feudal japan. That's all I'd want to say.

Tabatha Cat

Another stop motion movie I really like that I don't think is so well known is Kubo and the Two Strings. I recommend it highly.

Tabatha Cat

Yay!

I'm surprised to hear you like stop motion after what you said in your Gravity Falls "Little Gifts hope of Horrors" reaction. But indeed, this movie's a masterpiece. The Other Mother is perhaps the creepiest animated villain ever.

Dan_Gaming_Fan

My dream world would involve a lot of sleep.

William Timmins

I just rewatched ParaNorman and it's even better than I had remembered.

Belle Dame is probably a reference to the Keats poem La Belle Dame Sans Merci, which is either about a fae, vampire, or... something.

William Timmins

Personally I think 'spider creature' is not inconsistent with some form of the fae.

William Timmins

Watching this during a storm omg that's so fucking perfect

AnimeJNKY

Yes, the two older women are a couple. And the Other Mother is a spider creature only in the movie version. In the book, it's implied she's some sort of fairy/fae (as in those fucked up creatures who are famous for lacking and not understanding human morals, not the cutesy modern portrayal.) In the book, eating her food explicitly messes with your mind and makes you less likely to see through her illusions. Luckily for Coraline it's not as bad, but in fairy folk stories eating their food means game over and nothing can be done, with you becoming permanently trapped in their realm and no longer wanting to eat anything else ever again.

Neil Gaiman wrote the book this is based on, I read it when I was little. I don't remember what the differences are really, but I feel like the vibe was generally different in a lot of little ways and it seemed to specifically be set in England, and the house was a lot older than just 150 years

Word to the wise - don't take a shot every type Mosco "nopes!" during the movie. (*hic*) "Piracy works!" It does! And it's not like the artists who work on animated features get residuals, so you're not robbing us of income. "How long must it have taken them to animate the fingers that precisely?" It takes days to do even a simple shot. And there's no undo. Everything is animated straight ahead, on ones. The faces are 3D printed, were hand painted, and replaced every frame. The puppets are about 12" (30 cm) tall, and the props and sets are the same scale, too. And Laika barely used CG, so aside from rig removal, painting out face seams, and layering multiple passes, almost everything is practical. Yes, I know a lot about Laika. Because I work there. "Just watch the damn movie, Tammy!" Gonna bleep that for YouTube? When you paused on Other-Wybie's face, I thought you paused because of the back of Other Mother's skirt, which was the first hint of her true nature... "It's a lot to ask of a child..." well, there's the through line of all of Laika's films. You didn't "I has a biscuit." :( I think you'll enjoy ParaNorman, Laika's second film. It has similar vibes, and hands down one of the scariest "villains" in any "kids" movie. Maybe next Halloween?

Ryan Porter

The voice actor for the character you thought you maybe heard a bit of a Scottish twang is Jennifer Saunders (yes, she's English: born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England). She's a legend, with a long, LONG list of credits as a comedic actress. Animation-wise, her role before Coraline was as the Fairy Godmother in Shreck II.

That was a kangaroo mouse. They’re a desert rodent that lives in the southwestern US. They look like jerboas, but don’t have the long ears

Sobbingleaf

3 minutes in "I don't do well with scary stuff." I predict you will not be a other mother fan. Fortunately I was like 17 when this came out. I know for a fact this movie legit traumatized some 8 year olds.

cipher

Well, I fell short on the number of "nope"s, but I did correctly guess Mosco's (first) big "nope" moment. (Not hard, because it's the same as most people's)
