Honestly to sum it up: blame the puritans

Tahrae The storyteller

Also Hei Hei the chicken in Moana. Hahaha.

Fun fact about Clayface’s voice actor, Alan Tudyk: he’s been in most, if not all, Disney animated movies since 2012, starting with his role as King Candy in Wreck-it Ralph. I mostly remember that he voiced the Duke of Wesselton in Frozen, and then he voiced Duke Weaselton in Zootopia. That was the character that sold animal version of Disney movies. He also voices the Joker in this show.

Explaining the US's relationship with swear words is...well, it's impossible. ;) Clayface is every method actor ever, turned up to eleven.

5 and a half minutes in and you’re response is better than I hoped for! And let me just say, I personally don’t have a problem with the word as a general insult. I think it’s better than using the word “pussy” to refer to someone who’s doing something considered weak. If I had to guess I’d say my lax attitude about it probably comes from all the Game of Thrones I watched as a teenager.

Before I start, I just want to say I’m really curious to see your reaction to Dr. Psycho using the word “cunt,” and how the rest of the characters react to it, because I know that the cultural response to that word is dramatically different over here in the US compared to the UK.

If you haven't caught on yet, misogyny and toxic masculinity are the real villains of the series. Fortunately, the series is self aware of its position on things and handles it gracefully, unlike some other shows that we won't mention. Clayface is voiced by the wonderfully weird Alan Tudyk, perhaps best known for his performance of Hei Hei the chicken in Moana, and for his brief time washing spears. If you haven't seen it before, the video of him recording his "lines" is priceless - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaGYXjMwS60 Get used to Clayface's "overthinking the part" bit. It happens... a lot. He really prepares for his parts, and understands his GOTE.

Note that the voice actress for The Queen of Fables is Wanda Sykes, noted black lesbian comedian. LOVE her (she's hysterical, check out some of her stand-up)

All the characters in this show are a riot. And yes, Dr. Psycho won't be the last misogynistic piece of shit you'll encounter. Fortunately, most of them get what they deserve. And then some. The bureaucracy and agencies attached to the villains and heroes reminds me a lot of "The Venture Bros." where that was a running theme throughout the series. Where you actually had to be properly licensed in order to menace someone, and they had to be on the same level as you. Not the case in this series, just a parallel I picked up on when you pointed it out. Yeah, here in America "cunt" is typically directed at women. "Fucker" is more unisex. It would still get bleeped, but doesn't have the misogynistic connotation attached to it. And, no, not the last pixelated dong you'll see in this series. We'll try to warn ya.

Joey Quixote

Depends on the culture but around here it's often seen as a misogynist slur. (I mean it's not a coincidence that Psycho, a misogynist character, uses it exclusively to refer to women)

Rufus May

I say the word cunt all the time, it's the only word that isn't a slur that still carries weight.

Amy Payne

I love how Clayface can't just take on a disguise and run with it. No, he has to come up with their whole backstory, and motivations, and repeat them to everyone he meets. Pretty fitting, considering his origin in the comics was that before becoming a creature made of clay, he was a rather untalented actor.

Well at least you can have another couples cosplay to add to the ever growing list.

Kieran O'Connor

Listen... I dont need to be called out like that!

It’s nice to rewatch this show again, I forgot how funny it was even at the start. I hope you keep enjoying the show, just be ready it can be… a lot… at times. Hmm your favourite character is the sassy, red haired straight woman who struggles to accept romantic advances and has a partner who is a chaotic ball of hyperactive energy. Who could have seen that!?

Kieran O'Connor

Too bad Dr. Psycho wasn't in Scotland.🤣 Also, I think the reason it's such a bad word over here in the States is because of it's misogynistic implications. Anyway, Clayface is easily one of the best characters in the show. And just wait until you see who we meet next episode.

I think with doctor psycho, joker, and Zeus it just is great how awful they make the men because it directly reflects a lot of the male comic book fanbase. Honestly I personally only like one or two male characters on this show because a lot of them reflect toxic masculinity in obvious ways but also subtlely like with kiteman. This season definitely only goes up from here so I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
