She-Ra s1 ep2 The Sword Part 2 Full Reaction

Comments

I like to think of She-ra as being kind of like the avatar state. And Adora’s always reminded me of Korra, but way less hot-headed. Adora is basically like a himbo version of Korra.

Based on Shadow Weaver’s treatment of Catra the last couple episodes, I think it makes sense to view her as a victim/survivor of abuse. And so often people who’ve been raised in those types of environments struggle to get out of them. Plus like Catra said, Adora’s known these people for a couple of hours and she’s ready to give up on their life they’ve been planning together. Last episode Adora told Catra to stay behind instead of letting her come with, and that led to Catra getting in trouble and threatened with violence. Then Adora asked Catra to come with her almost as an afterthought. Yeah, Catra’s psychology is just really interesting and complex!

The scene where Adora realizes she’s turned against the Horde and starts freaking out reminds me of Hunter at the end of TOH 2x16! Really Adora’s journey the last two episodes reminds me of Hunter’s arc throughout TOH season 2. Teen prodigy of the conquering empire gets a promotion, starts to see the world and make connections outside of the compound where they were raised, and discovers they’ve been raised on propaganda and brainwashing by the villains.

My favourite part in a future ep is where Bow says nothing but ADVENTURE for 7 full minutes

Honestly, any discussion of Catra's psychology feels kinda spoiler-y to me. This show has a lot of "character's motivations slowly revealed and explored but never outright stated", which can impact how we interpret things on a re-watch. It also causes some divided interpretations within the fandom. So, I find it interesting to see how various reactors interpret each character, and how those interpretations change as the show progresses. Catra is probably the best example of this, I've seen some very divided opinions on why she acts the way she does.

I'm excited to be on Patreon to see your full reactions to this show! I hope you enjoy the ride; I actually watched it as it came out. Initially I started watching the series out of spite -- to spite all the whiny man-babies who were crying/raging about She-Ra's less sexualized design (I think I saw someone already mention how the 80's design was essentially a ploy to sell dolls) and many were fat-shaming a noteably curvy character. It's hard for me to start new shows because of my attention span, but that spite brought me to start S1 - and then interest did the rest of the work, as the seasons only improve as they advance. EDIT: ALSO, good luck with submitting this on YT.. it's probably on-par with TOH in terms of how much copyright has sucked for reactors. That probably won't surprise you with your experience, but fair warning. :(

Catra is a very complex character, she reacts to and copes with her traumas by emulating them. You'll definitely disagree with or not understand why she does certain things at points throughout the show. But from a psychological standpoint they are common reactions and coping methods that people in a similar situation may have.

Horsi, that is a stupid name for a horse.

Are you ready to be emotionally destroyed by this show? Oh yeah, Catra's a complex character she contradicts herself all the time

Friends to enemies! A powerful trope.

Not that you needed MORE secret codes, but the First Ones language that Adora reads can actually be decoded. I forgot how important Bow was to winning Adora over. His kindness and empathy really went a long way while Glimmer was resisting. Kinda makes him instrumental in saving the rebellion, if you think about it.

Trust me. You'll find out soon enough.

It's really hard to discuss why Catra is the way she is until ep 11.

I did not pick up on any of that, hopefully we get to see more of Catra's side in flashbacks going forward. Still feels weird that Catra would rather turn back to the people who hurt and abused her over Adora, if I were her and angry with both I'd just leave both behind. Why choose abuse over a misunderstanding?

Catra feels betrayed by Adora. The Horde has been hurting Catra in front of Adora their whole lives, and Adora is only JUST NOW realizing that The Horde is evil? Because they're unnecessarily harming innocent civilians? I can imagine Catra feeling like, "Oh, what? So was I not also innocent? Do you think I deserved it? Did you care about me at all?"  Catra has stayed in The Horde and put up with regular torture, holding onto the belief that she and Adora would one day have enough power in The Horde to be safe, to rule together. And now, with Adora leaving, that's never going to happen. Then what was the point of all that pain?
