I love Dean but Dean can be completely selfish at the same time as his heart being in the right place. Dean cannot be alone. He stopped it so Dean wouldn’t be alone. Sam was READY to die but Dean took that choice away from him. Sam left Dean in Purgatory (that whole storyline was ridiculous) even Jared has said that Sam wouldn’t do that. It came down to it, I don’t think at that moment in time Sam would stop it to save Dean
