2025-11-12 21:48:23 +0000 UTCIdk if this is causing confusion but: Ichigo has a mask because of the training he did with Urahara after Byakuya took away his soul reaper powers way back when they captured Rukia. It’s not RNG. To get Ichigo to manifest his soul reaper powers again, Urahara had to sever his soul chain, but this also causes the chain to slowly eat itself. When a soul chain is completely depleted, the soul mutates into a hollow (this is what leaves behind the hole in their torsos). Ichigo reached the very brink of this while down in that pit and began the process of hollowfication, but was able to overcome it. So now he has the mask. Also: I feel like the concept of gigai is a bit confusing. When Urahara and Isshin were talking in the previous episode, one of them made a comment about wondering if Isshin had become weaker over time and if it would be Urahara’s fault. Urahara likely supplied Isshin with a special gigai (fake human body). I guess they were just speculating about the side effects of living as a human in a gigai for that long. Any time you see a soul reaper in the world of the living and regular humans can see them, they are in a gigai.
