W Jack moment recognizing King Hitsugaya being a badass

Wesley Owens

I'm a bit behind on these reactions, so this comment might feel a bit late: It's often stated that a fighter's true strength lies in their emotions; while that certainly applies to most characters in anime, when it comes to Orihime, it's almost entirely literal. You might have missed this, but it was very briefly stated in a previous episode that, unlike traditional combatants like Ichigo, her powers are DEEPLY tied to her emotional state; this was especially apparent during the fight against Yammy: Sōten Kisshun (Healing shield) responded greatly to her intense desire to save and heal Chad and Tatsuki. At this point in time it's her strongest power mainly due to her strong desire not to let anyone get hurt or feel pain. Santen Kesshun (Defense shield) did manage to barely reject Yammy’s powerful finger jab, though it did shatter. He is one of the stronger Arrancar, and his casual jab carries immense destructive force. Even so, the fact that it shatter just from a finger shows that deep down she doesn't believe she's capable to outright protecting her loved ones from harm, despite how much she wants to protect them. Finally, Koten Zanshun (Cutting shield), which completely failed to lay a mark on Yammy, and Tsubaki, the spirit responsible for the attack, was easily destroyed. Orihime’s pacifist nature and reluctance to harm others directly affect the strength of her attack. Her failure with Koten Zanshun against Yammy isn’t just a matter of power, it’s a reflection of her intent. It is meant to inflict “harm” on a target, potentailly maiming them. But for that to work, Orihime must WANT to hurt the target. Yet in that moment, her emotional energy is entirely directed toward saving Chad and Tatsuki, not harming Yammy. Her subconscious prioritization of preservation over aggression weakens the offensive spirit, Tsubaki, who embodies her will to fight.
