I'm sure someone already explained this but the Mythical Type Fish Fish Fruit Model Asure Dragon is Kaidous fruit.
It's the prophecy behind Magikarp and Gyarados in Pokemon as well to help ground it. The story is that if a Carp becomes strong enough to swim up a waterfall it will be granted Mythical powers and become a dragon. Ah la Fish Fish Fruit. Ah la Mythical. Ah la Asure Dragon that looks like Gyarados

And I say "presenting as" because that is the language used to differentiate someone's biological sex from the gender they choose to present as, as well as the gender they identify as (in cases where someone does not present as the gender they identify with). Now, I'm gonna go ahead and predict that you disagree with the scientific consensus that gender identity can be separate from biological sex, in which case you're a lost cause.

At what point in the source material does Kaido say he calls Yamato a son for that reason? Nowhere, because Yamato is very clear that he chose to become a man because Oden was a man. While it's a weird reasoning, there is no debate on that being the reason. As for Kyuubei, I chose that example because of how similar he is. And if you watched Gintama, Kyuubei has several scenes of self-realization of how he identifies with being a man completely separate from his upbringing. That said, there is still ambiguity and enough reasoning to still say Kyuubei is a girl, and either interpretation is acceptable.

@The Otter Man Once again, you're ignoring Oda's creative intent with Yamato being called bocchan. She was raised as a boy because Kaidou wanted a male heir. You can see this concept stated almost explicitly in Yamato's concept sketches. And she's based on another manga character with this exact same lore. I'm sorry you hate the truth about this issue, but the truth is the truth. I address the boku terminology elsewhere in one of these threads.
The fact you reference Kyuubei from Gintama to support your case is hilarious. It's exactly the same trope Yamato is. Kyuubei is not a boy. She's a girl, and that's the whole point of her story. Your use of "presenting as" language reveals your ideological capture here.

Sure you could pick out instances where it doesn't follow that pattern, but like I said on a previous post, that's like saying "bro" isn't male-specific in english because sometimes women can be called bro.
The Otter Man
2025-03-22 22:50:31 +0000 UTC
Ok and many people/chartacters born female but later presenting as a man also use boku. As for the way they call Yamato "Young Master", the phrase used is almost exclusively used for male heirs, unless its a female-born character presenting themself as a male heir (one of my fav examples is Kyuubei from Gintama). The point is, I was just giving one example, but I could do this for literally dozens of terms that are used either by Yamato or others to indicate his status as a man.
The Otter Man

Quite a few women use "Boku", usually as a sign of being tomboyish. Example: The lead singer of "Glim Spanky", Remi Matsuom that sung the ending of One Piece Film Gold "Ikari wo kureyo", is very openly a woman, yet only uses boku as a self honorific. So, sorry Otter man, that argument is irrelevant.

@Y0m0three
I don't think it has come up before, actually, and I wouldn't expect anyone to be familiar with that legend outside of Japan. Dinosaurs look like flightless dragons so that made sense, but making the connection between fish and dragons is not as straightforward. I really only blame him for losing track of Ace's timeline, but even then I suppose it is understandable since it wasn't really established in any kind of certain way that Ace was only at Wano one time.

Jack saying "does he not know how this works?" to Queen lmao (love you Jack). Marco is not Logia... his powers are far superior to Logia invulnerability. He ate a mythical zoan, the phoenix fruit, that gives him instant regeneration from any damage that he takes (including fatal damage like being stabbed in the head), in addition to giving him flight and fire attacks. It's one of the most busted fruits in the entire show. So Queen is confused because, yes, Queen is clearly using haki infused bullets OR seastone bullets (prob haki bullets if I had to guess). He does not understand how Marco's ability works at first because it is completely unique to Marco.

Notably, Yamato consistently uses "boku" to self-identify. If you google "boku meaning," the first result is "In Japanese, 'boku' (僕) is a first-person pronoun meaning 'I' or 'me,' typically used by males, especially young men, in a casual or semi-formal manner. "

@Sceptic Llama Yes, possibly. While that legend does exist, it's not explicit, even in the SBS. Oda doesn't seem to imply Kaidou's awakening was turning into a dragon anywhere. The fruit's model name was always Seiryuu, which means the creature was always a dragon, but classified as a fish. The Magikarp Kaidou idea seems to be a fan head-canon more than anything (though I do think it's hilarious and a great theory).

Fun fact that's not been said in the anime (At all as it's only been said in the SBS): Ulti and Page One's dad was an affiliate with Kaido's Crew, as he was the one who provided most of the Zoan Devil Fruits to his crew. His name was Hanafuda (Epithet: King of Lizards), who was also a previous Warlord of the Sea. He was defeated by Ace. Due to this and because of his strength in the short-time as a pirate, was the reason he was offered a Warlord Position. Also the fruit Kaido has is the Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon. The reasoning behind it being labeled the "Fish-Fish Fruit" is the connections between dragons and fish in East Asian mythology.

also, tbh, there'd be no reason for Ace to call Yamato he or use any male suffixes as Yamato at the time had not taken on the will of Oden. It is only after Ace that would be a thing.

I believe it might also be a reference to the koi fish legend in japan https://www.animalwised.com/what-is-the-koi-fish-legend-5566.html which talks about a koi that swam upstream up a waterfall and became a dragon(I think that is how it goes).

Marco isn't a Logia, he's actually a Mythical Zoan. He literally does take the damage he receives, but he regenerates from the damage, being a Phoenix and all. when he was stabbed through and shot up, he basically just ate those, and pulled a wolverine on steroids' lol.

This isn't a spoiler since Oda had to reveal it in an SBS, but Kaidou's fruit is the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryuu (Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon). Think eastern sea serpent, not a western mountain/cave dragon. In older speak (in various other languages too), sea dragons would have been considered 'fish' since they swim.

Ace doesn't call Yamato 'he' in Japanese either, btw. People just ignore all of this and cling to the biased English subtitles. Shinobu doesn't use "sir," either. She's just speaking formally.

Kaido's devil fruit is the mythological Zoan fish-fish fruit, type azure dragon or Uo Uo no Mi, Model Seiryu.
He received this fruit from Big Mom and also ate it.
The manga explains it better: this Zoan fruit enables the transformation into a koi carp. However, this carp is a mythical creature from a Chinese fairy tale with the ability to transform into a dragon. This is where the ability to transform into a dragon comes from, even though it isn't a dragon-dragon devil fruit.

yeah not gonna lie, sometimes he is on point and sometimes this man is a massive goober I swear. Eastern dragons are related to fish, it's western dragons that are reptilian, like I swear Kaido's fruit has come up before and he didn't have a problem understanding it then. Not to mention the actual dragon-dragon class of zoans is already known to be used for dinosaurs and not actual dragons.

Jack I can't belive you've done this again
Ace didn't have the Whitebeard tattoo on his back when he came to wano so that was obviously before he joined him. He had a crew called the Spade Pirates when he first set out to sea then that crew got smushed fighting Jinbei when Ace was trying to get to Whitebeard
Puddings potential as poneglyph reader was revealed during wholecake and mentioned multiple times
Also in Asian folklore Koi fish that get to the top of the waterfall transform into dragons

Ace came to Wano before he met Whitebeard with his own crew and wanted to go to Wano again when beeing under Whitebeard but that would obviously count as Whitebeard Pirates attacking another Yonko, which obviously is bad (as we saw a similar scale on Marineford). About the Mythical Fish fruit, it will be relevant later :) can´t wait for the next episode.
