It's kind of a subjective thing but I personally didn't have any issues with these scenes (though the anime does make them feel like a bigger deal than it was in the manga- they were barely a few panels in the manga so it wasn't meant to feel like such a big moment. Nami cries all the time. She runs away screaming and crying literally all the time in the series, I don't really know what you're talking about. Now to be fair, a lot of that is usually played for laughter (like Nami crying out to Franky after facing Big Mom just a few episodes ago) but regardless Nami has never been an emotionally stunted character like Robin and Zoro. She wears her heart on her sleeve, its actually why I think she's such a strong female character. Unlike other writers, Oda doesn't feel the need to make Nami a cold, unfeeling, brave badass to show her strength. Nami is just like Usopp- Physically weak, a coward in the face of danger (which is totally fair when you're not a monster like the rest of the crew), and easily affected by the situation. If you think crying makes someone emotionally weak I'm a little confused how you enjoy One Piece at all, given that most character's strongest character moments are when they are crying (and it's not because they are weak, but rather because they are becoming stronger- IE: Sanji in Whole Cake, Robin in Enies Lobby, Luffy during Post-Marineford). Nami and Usopp didn't have some big plan when running away from Page One and Ulti. They were running because they were being chased by people way stronger than them, and unfortunately the rest of the crew just believes in them/were busy and so didn't feel the need to help them. I feel like this one is pretty simple. Is it a plot device? For sure, but it's not one that feels forced to me. As for the scaling, I mean, it has always been the case that trying to power scale in One Piece is a little ridiculous. It's not like Oda is super flippant about realism in combat power but he's never been that concerned on making things perfectly reasonable. In my opinion, Nami is quite fragile and yes, we haven't really seen her ever take huge hits from anyone, so I think its fair enough to feel a bit confused as to why she managed to take the hit (despite humans being obviously a lot more durable in One Piece compared to our world). That said, I do think Usopp has more than showed his durability throughout the series. Man has taken full-power hits from Luffy during Water 7, that metal bat that literally broke his face in Alabasta, all the bombs from Perona in Thriller Bark, and he fought the Trebol/Sugar combo in Dressrosa and managed to stay conscious, just barely. I totally buy him taking a hit from pretty much anyone in the series and staying conscious, broken but alive, except for like Luffy now, the other emperors, and maybe like Katakuri and King. But I don't think it's a reach at all for him to take a hit from any of the other Tobi Roppo and stay conscious given what we've seen. Anyway, I think most people took these scenes too seriously. From my perspective, especially given how short the panels were, this was just Oda pulling his typical coward trio gag but trying to twist the end of it to show how much Nami has changed. MelonTeee actually has a great analysis that made me like the scene even more- basically, after all this time of Nami being the type of person to always consider practicality and intelligence over her personal feelings, Nami is starting to become more like her mother, Bellemere. A lot of people think Bellemere died for nothing, given that she could have just lied to Arlong about not having children and gotten away with it without dying. But to Bellemere, it was really never a choice for her. Saying that Nami and Nojiko were not her daughters was something that she couldn't bring herself to do, no matter the consequences, no matter how stupid it was. So even though Nami was freed by the Strawhats and became a lot more happy and open journeying with them, she never quite understood that feeling of standing up for your beliefs in the face of death even if it's a stupid thing to do. It's actually made quite clear in Whole Cake- After Sanji beat up Luffy, Nami was 100% willing to give up on him, abandon him to his tragic fate, and leave, despite probably knowing he had his reasons for doing so. But I think something Luffy showed Nami through his actions in Whole Cake is that stubbornly insisting on something that you know to be true and that you believe with your whole heart can lead to good things sometimes, instead of tragedy like in the case of her mother. Therefore for one of the first times in her life in this scene, Nami defies her common sense and logic for the first time to do something incredibly stupid and silly for no good reason, purely because she believes in Luffy and can't bring herself to talk him down. I believe this is the main reason she's crying in that scene- because she 100% thinks she is about to die, and she knows she is sealing her fate by doing what she's doing, but she literally can't stop herself. Despite her similarities with Bellemere, Nami is ultimately physically weak without her staff, and she has strong, reliable teammates. Bellemere was a strong marine soldier who was used to risking her life. So to Bellemere, throwing her life away for her ideals was something she could do while remaining calm and smiling, but for Nami, it was her first time doing so, and she normally would never do anything so reckless, and I bet her subconscious was screaming at her in the moment, so needless to say her emotions were running high in that moment.

You just have to take some artistic liberties and translate the *idea* of the text rather than word-for-word. That's what good translators do, anyway.

Tony

@SpeedyRam Exactly, it's not an Usopp thing at all. It is not expected by Luffy for a crewmember to die just to say Luffy will be King of the Pirates... it's just that Luffy means too much to them for them to say otherwise. It would be like rejecting something they fight and live for. Usopp would not be able to say it either, he just doesn't want Nami to die. I think it would be dumb for Usopp to internally be like "don't say it" when he would fully expect Nami to just get immedietly killed for not saying it. That makes no sense. The crew would prioritize Nami's life over a lie, but they just can't bring themselves to say it is the point.

DiamonDust

How would you even translate it and make it work with the subtitles order, then? I don't think there is any way around that... english just is written in that order with the wording. The wording has to be "Luffy will never be King of the Pirates" in english, and she is reciting it according to what her enemy said so it's not like the order or wording of it are negotiable. Unless the meaning of what she said in Japanese was way different, but it sounds nearly identical to me just in english word order.

DiamonDust

Wdym calm down? I am calm. I just shared my opinion like you did, you aren't being attacked. Nobody said you can't dislike a character, or that we have to agree. I don't even recognize or remember replying to a different comment of yours, but so what if I did? You are posting an opinion in a public space for people to read and reply to... if you don't want replies that disagree then don't post the opinion. Nobody is personally attacking you lol, relax. I don't think you were insulted at all, but sorry if it came off that way.

DiamonDust

Usopp wouldn't have been able to say it either, Jack, you misunderstand. Usopp just didn't want to see Nami get killed, that's all. Lying was objectively the best way to survive, and nobody (not even Luffy) would blame them for lying. However, no Strawhat would ever say Luffy cannot become King of the Pirates because Luffy and his dream mean too much to them. TBH, I do kind of dislike these scenes though even though I think they had potential and some good aspects. Nami should not be crying so much in the face of the enemy... she endured more pain than almost anyone without crying in her past even as a child. Crying when she refused to say he wouldn't become King makes sense cause it would be emotional tears rather than it being out of fear, but crying just from her life being in danger? Idk man, seems like character assassination. Say what you want about how strong Nami is physically, but she was never emotionally weak. Also it just felt a bit forced. Why did Nami and Usopp run away and leave to where they had no allies to help them? They would be no match for one Tobiroppo let alone two, this is so overkill as a match up for no good reason. Lastly, the scaling really doesn't make much sense for Nami or Usopp to survive (let alone stay conscious) after taking those hits. You can kind of explain that away by just saying Ulti conserved her own energy and didn't go as hard as she did vs Luffy, but even then I think them remaining conscious is kind of bogus lol. This was an enemy that was gonna push Luffy into 4th gear after she caught him off guard, mind you. I think it would have been better for them to either get knocked out or just not take the hits to begin with.

DiamonDust

Okay…? Calm down 😭 Remember, people allowed to dislike characters! If you find it entertaining good for you, I find her extremely annoying. We don’t have to agree on one thing. Also I find the reason she attacked them is shallow not why she had to attack them. You don’t have to reply to all of my comments about Ulti, or being heated about it bc we saw something differently, more so arguing about it knowing the outcome is just nothing lol. Just scroll down.

Gita

You are just describing why she is an entertaining character, but ok. I don't want all characters to be mature and perfect. Unreasonable characters are often more entertaining and have more personality. Also, I'd argue that wanting to beat someone for that reason (wanting to be king of pirates) showed her loyalty to Kaido which made her more interesting and it created a parallel to the Straw Hats. Also, it's not anybody... it's the guy who invaded Kaido's stronghold and THEN said that. Plus, they are fighting a war anyway so idk why you think it is stupid for her to eliminate the enemy. Especially the Straw Hats who are some of the biggest threats.

DiamonDust

usopp said that out of worry for nami, usopp literally was the second strawhat to ever say luffy will be king in the face of death

pablo

Don't forget that Usopp's role is literally The Liar, not The Sniper like most people think lol

Fae

With Onigashima, the lows are very very low, but the highs are the most peak moments in the entire story

SimStu

yes, it's time to weaponize otama

CouldBeNadir

yeah there's a lot of boring scenes in this arc but as you said, the good parts are the best anyone has seen in the show

Umar Baig

Onigashima drags for a while, but the good parts are amazing. Can't wait for THOSE episodes. ;)

BrindleBoxer

we getting close yall to the big 15!!!

FREEMAN

Ulti is such a kid. Imagine being in a serious war like that, and you run around wanting to kill someone just because you saw their friend (Luffy) want the same dream as millions of other people. If she sees powerful people like Big Mom, and she says in front of her face that she will be the King of The Pirates, she'll be mad like that? Such an annoying character. Her, Apoo and Hawkins. I really can't stand them lmao. Props to her voice actor though, she nailed it.

Gita

Don't take a close-up shot because I'm falling in love. ♥️

Christian Blanco Amaro

Honestly I'm pretty sure Ussop wouldn't have been able to lie if he had been in Nami's shoes either, he was just deathly worried for her. He could have played with his own life but that's his bestie right there and he was terrified. Also love how easy it is to forget that Yamato is Kaido's kid because he looks so normal, until you see him tank like 20 canonballs without a scratch lmao

Log

I totally get your take on Ussopp at the end. His name literally means "Lie" so that part of him will probably stay that way to the very end, even in situations like this if he needs to lie to survive. But I don't hate him for it because I know he doesnt actually mean it and has complete trust in his captain. And more so, for the sake of storyteling, Ussop (of all people) had to be the one to say that to hype up Nami's moment. The fact that he manages to pull through after his lies is part of his development. So I wouldnt say he has the least amount of development. Though it would be a sick moment if he surprises us one day!

Levy

man, the remake gotta come sooner rather than later 😭 or at least remaster wano like fishman, although dressrosa really needs it too. The ice oni pacing is SO ROUGH

RichiPete

that zoom in during Brook's "meltdown" had me in stitches.

True Monk3y

This is a common interpretation of that scene that I've always disagreed with. If Usopp were in Nami's position, I believe he would've done the same as she did. Although Usopp knows how important it is to acknowledge their captain as the future pirate king and would likely do so even in the face of death, he doesn't want to see his friend die over it. And I don't think this is a viewpoint only Usopp would have as I see this situation playing out nearly identically if you put any other strawhat in Usopp's place.

SpeedyRam

Nami's big line was horribly translated. Since Japanese word order puts "King of the Pirates" at the beginning of the sentence whether it's positive or negated, they could start Nami's line with that and keep the meaning of the sentence as a whole ambiguous because the viewer wouldn't have heard the spot where the negative particle goes yet. So the voice actor never actually says the Japanese equivalent of "not." In English, I'm not really sure why they changed it to "Luffy will never be able to..." but it affects the meaning of the line.

Tony

I love that nami moment. I have no idea what Oda is doing with Usopp man.

Happy

Yes he lies and as Jack said he is one of the least developed straw hats (basically since after Water 7) but I think for a reason tho, I believe Oda has some serious plans with Usopp. Also he is lieing with words but he doesn´t with his actions.

Ender

Ice Oni has Jack tweaking and ngl I can't blame him.

Portalbeard

Yeah that's one thing I really dislike about Ussop, like he's just trained to lie even if it breaks something sacred within the crew
