2025-02-23 19:15:31 +0000 UTCIf I remember correctly, Yamato was inspired by a character from another manga, a girl that was raised as a prince so she could inherit her father's kingdom or something upon his death. The father forced the boy stuff on her, and it is eventually revealed she was his daughter. Oda liked that subplot and worked it into Yamato. You can tell Oda wanted to make a point of Yamato being Kaidou's heir, so the implication was that Kaidou raised her as a son. But this was never put in the manga explicitly and only exists in Yamato's concept sketches.

2025-02-23 18:53:32 +0000 UTCThis is a translator bias, btw. They did this intentionally. Third person pronouns are relatively rare in Japanese. They are usually used as disambiguators only. Yamato is never referred to with "Kare" (he/him).

2025-02-23 18:50:08 +0000 UTCThis is because the subtitlers and translators had this implicit bias, so you never read Yamato being referred to as a she. This is why it was a problem to begin with. Fans that knew Japanese knew something was off with the translations. Using male pronouns is fine before the reveal that Yamato was Kaidou's daughter. She is given the title Kaidou's son, etc. But once she was revealed to be his daughter, every translator *should* have switched their language. But they didn't because of their political persuasion and fear of trans backlash.

2025-02-22 12:07:57 +0000 UTCOh, when I see the Yamato debate situation in the fandom, it makes me happy that i hadn't joined before I caught up with the latest anime/manga chapter because I just accepted what Kaido, Luffy, and the others called Yamato with he or him. It's simple for us who watch the show or read the manga outside the fandom to take these kind of things at face value. I don't know why people popping veins over that so much. I definitely recommend to people who haven't caught up yet, do not get into the fandom before you catch up to get the full experience! Let this be your journey.

Cause there's no way the child abusing, country strangling, alcoholic captain of the beast pirates would accept Yamato just like that
