2025-02-27 02:50:24 +0000 UTCI don't intend to leave comments about this on any other videos cause this issue has been beaten to death over the years, but as far as the Yamato gender thing is concerned please know that it is open to interpretation if she is trans or not. IDC, what anyone says, it's open to interpretation. We have no 100% reliable way to know if she is trans or not, and that's why this whole debate exists. Call her whatever you want, it does not matter. Yamato would likely answer to both sets of pronouns anyway, he or she. Both are correct for different reasons imo. Personally, I call her "she" because the vivre card is the most canon indicator we have to go off of to prove her gender. Kiku is labeled as trans in her vivre card, but Yamato is not. I also think that Yamato's character makes more sense and is funnier as someone who "acts" out the part of Oden out of admiration, which includes acting out his gender. When you are acting, it does not mean your true gender identity matches the character you are portraying. But that is just me, and I see both sides. I have taken both sides of this debate in the past, so I don't think I'm biased.

I agree with lots of transphobes being in the anime community (not specific to anime community though, they are everywhere), but in my opinion Yamato is probably not meant by Oda to be canonically trans. It used to be far more unclear if Yamato was trans or not which was why there was such a huge debate (I even used to lean toward seeing her as trans), but since then there was a vivre card entry (basically canonical character info cards that Oda writes) released for Yamato that listed her as a woman. Compare that to the card for Kiku that makes note that she is male but has "the heart of a woman" (aka trans in japan meaning), and you have a very clear cut answer. Why would Oda give that label to Kiku who is undeniably trans, but not Yamato? Oda also drew Yamato as one of the women in a well known beach spread, so you can see how even without the vivre card there is already conflicting evidence. I, for one, see the vivre card as pretty definitive evidence, and I think Yamato works better as a gag character who just likes to emulate Oden than a trans character. Other trans characters in One Piece are very obviously trans and there is a very heavy gender focus, but by comparison Yamato's identity is more focused on Oden rather than Oden's gender. It's like Yamato is "acting" as Oden in a stage play, I don't see it as actually being trans because it is just acting and not her true gender identity. As an actor, you would naturally emulate everything about the character you are trying to portray including their gender. Hence the confusion. But hey, that's just my opinion. At the end of the day, who tf cares though? I am pretty sure Yamato would answer to both "he" and "she" pronouns in universe no matter what your opinion on the matter is so we should honestly just not fight about this and just refer to her how we want. I think it's puposely "open to interpretation". People can see Yamato as trans if they want, and other people don't have to see her as trans. In an ideal world that's how it would work, at least. This is a sensitive issue so that will never happen, though. I don't think your comment is really helping because it essentially implies that anyone who says Yamato isn't trans is a transphobe, which is just not true at all.

I've just never seen anyone on the Right push male Yamato. That's more what I mean. I fundamentally disagree that One Piece is a Leftist manga. That's like saying Bleach is a Republican manga. Japan has a different political system than the West. For example, Leftists wouldn't push the creation of weapons as an inherent good (see Tom's philosophy). Pirate King is an inherently merit-based, conquest-driven position of strength. That's a hard-right, Old World idea. Luffy doesn't care about people's races (colorblind philosophy, more Rightist) or pasts (more Leftist). Yamato calls themselves a He, the Beast pirates call Yamato a He, Kaido calls Yamato a He, and it's manga canon that Yamato uses the male baths, not the female baths. It was definitely meant to be open to interpretation, not attack others over.

If you talk about inaccuracies with the Vivre Card, they are almost always corrected, but they didn't correct the Yamato one because she is a woman. She is Oden, but still a woman, when she bathes with the men, she's Oden, but she's still a woman...

I find it baffling that this is such a big issue, it is not like Yamato can tell us how she feels about it and the way I see it that she just identifies as Oden and as he was a strong man so she needs to be. I would love for her character to have a conclusion some day to overcome wanting to be Oden and rather being a own character and person. I would also love to see the community care equally as less, would be so much easier not having to get headaches by endless discussion where no one will ever win or turn someone over with an argument.

Yamato also ended up on the all-female color spread last year. And Yamato is constantly referred to as the "oni-hime" (demon princess) as a child. Yamato believes she's Oden. She isn't actually a man. It's a personality quirk.

A large portion of the anime community are racists and transphobes so even mentioning a he/she will cause them to have an aneurysm. The fact that they are attracted to Yamato but they identify as a man really bothers them.

It is speculated whether he's connected to Kaido but I think he's almost certainly his source of Ancient Devil Fruits. For one, his name is a card reference. Second, I think he's likely Ulti and Page One's dead pirate father, who was referenced in their data as Kaido's acquaintance. IF this is true, they're very new and the Warlord is dead.
