It's a pun. Just say "Laugh tale" with a bad Japanese accent, then laugh at the sillyness of the joke ;).

elementalist33

Jack, seriously Jack the apology was to the ancient mermaid princess you know this already why confuse yourself every time somethings reintroduced.

erueka6

its not an error, its Oda played with Japanese language. Check out this https://www.quora.com/Was-Raftel-a-mispronunciation-of-Laugh-Tale

BUDDY WE'RE BARELY SCRATCHING THE SURFACE WITH ALL THE LORE

This is just a theory but I think with the four road ponoglyphs one represents the X axis one represents the Y axis one is the Z axis, giving verticality and the three dimensional shape and finally the last one represents a timeframe giving a fourth dimension to this island

Zura Janai, Katsura Da

You don't know why you're crying? I'll tell you why, because You Love One Piece!!

Mel Jaimes

I thought raftel was a subtitle error and it was laugh tale all along

Luis Garza

He laughed

Also! Because you already watched this episode, it is safe to say what Inuarashi / Dogstorm and Nekomamushi / Master Cat Viper talked to Nami in Zou when she asked about the Log Pose. Correct me if I'm wrong. and I'm sorry if this is too long lol. We all know that she's afraid that they were off the course since learning about Road Pone existence. Nami's main purpose now is to sail her crew to Laugh Tale, to fulfill Luffy's dream. However, we know that the Grand Line sailing rule is hopping island to island based on Log Pose. If what they wanted to find is another island which based on coordinates from Road Pone, then the last island which the Log Pose set isn't the actual Last Island. In the backstory, Roger mentioned, the last Island name 'Lodestar', that's what Inuarashi meant that they need to learn about 'something' there first before knowing how to get to the last Island. From what I understand, that's why Roger is convinced that there is one more Island, and to go there, you need all four Road Pone. Inuarashi said to Nami that she doesn't need to worry about the Log Pose because the Straw hats is already on a Journey which lies beyond that point. Which lies in what it actually means. It could mean even before they get to the last island the Logpose pointed to, 'Lodestar', they already knew they needed all 4 Pone to the last Island, and also you've noticed that in Roger's Last Journey, the route is exactly like Luffy's first Journey. It might also be what it meant.

Gita

at that moment, Roger was.... laughing. So were we. We laughed so hard that we cried.

chrisis

oda cooks yet again

lucian serros

The way you cried because you were overwhelmed by not even a sad backstory, again I feel you so much. I understand it so much, and you wouldn't react that way if One Piece was not the same length as it is now. In 900+ chapters, we've embarked on a journey with Luffy and his friends, experiencing the One Piece world like the Straw hats for the first time. From East Blue, to Paradise and to the New World. We've been hearing about Gol D. Roger as if he's some monumental artifact that happened a hundred years ago, for hundred hours. Such a phenomenal character, and now when in the present time, Luffy is on his way to fight one of the four strongest pirate in the world, another monumental level to him and to the series as a whole, we've learned how Roger finished his journey. That feeling will only be achieved because One Piece is as long as it is. It will not hit as much if it has a shorter length. The number of episodes is indeed intimidating, but damn it's worth it.

Gita

Don't know if jack realized but what Roger said to Pedro is the same thing that Pedro said to carrot

Glad I'm not the only one to cry from non sad scenes lmao

Jack you are literally my favourite person ever, not tryin' to glaze. I've never seen anyone so damn genuine. Don't ever change that.

Kian D. Johnson

As I said before: Upon release Chapter 967 was considered the Chapter of the Decade. THIS is what a fictional world is supposed to feel like. Those moments when you forget to breathe and enter into a higher state of being. The only works of fiction to ever make me feel like that were One Piece, Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter and The Promised Neverland.

Kian D. Johnson

Yo Jack, I know this sounds crazy but I would ABSOLUTELY watch an entire Rewatch Series of One Piece. Please please PLEASE consider at least recording your rewatch.

Kian D. Johnson

That's insane

Kian D. Johnson

Ender Craft7393

You said last episode was peak. But i'd argue THIS is peak. This moment surpasses so many. And yet, knowing what we know, this isn't even close to the highest peak. One piece is just peak after peak after peak. I love this story so much.

Sceptic Llama

Jack im so glad that I could reach this point in the story with you. The big lore bombs and huge moments don't stop with this episode. I can't wait to catch up with you!

As others have said, ラフテル (rafuteru), which was rendered "Raftel" by localizers, was obscured in meaning due to not having an official Anglicization (rendering sounds into English script) early on. So no one really knew what Oda was trying to imply abroad. While the English word "laugh" is indeed represented by ラフ (rafu), テル would be associated with "tell" instead of "tale" ("tale" is usually rendered テイル (teiru)). But it could also be associated with the word "raft" and maybe added a fantastical flourish of "el" to make it sound exotic. Laughtell or Laugh Tell does not immediately sound as good as Raftel to the English ear. I'm not sure how obscure the meaning was in Japan. It seems Oda may have made it a bit of a puzzle over there too, because he hid a Japanese translation of "Laugh Tale" in Binks' Sake. And Roger references this in the line "It's such a funny story..." The word is 笑い話 (waraibanashi), literally "laughing story" or "funny story." It closes out the last verse of Binks' Sake, intentionally, it seems. Since Oda didn't render the English meaning until this very chapter, I would say the Japanese audience also had some confusion about what ラフテル was supposed to be or mean.

Waywatcher Fireson

i have been waiting for you to watch this for years now, so glad to rewatch this and seeing you experience the same joy i had first time reading this backstory. It was so well, that i forgot about our main characters.

Nermin Selimovic

because we are supposed to believe its raftel until this reveal

VENTUZ

One of the absolutely greatest chapters and episodes.

Conor Murphy

I think that chapter released on Christmas Eve years ago now, special memories

S W

Jack so overwhelmed he didn't notice the last Road Poneglyph used to be on Fishman Island.

EACB

Yeah, because Oda hadn't revealed the proper romanization until this flashback. Nobody beside him knew it was supposed to be Laugh Tale.

EACB

And to think when these chapters were releasing people were borderline begging for the flashback to end.

Team AWAP

just go to show if roger was the main character the show would have been just as good

Dark Kronis

subtitle said raftel too

Umar Baig

so true definitely one of the best one piece episodes

Umar Baig

THIS SHIT MEANS SOMETHING TO ME MANN

Kyle Nicholson

this is HISTORY in the making, while rewatching these episodes i always get CHILLS, my god how beautiful is one piece...

Gabbo DG

The parallel that Roger and Oden could hear THE VOICES and Momonosuke and Luffy and notice only the ones who ate a df (Toki and Buggy) became ill and not the rest...

Umar Baig

Also this episodes are like a bucket of cold water letting us know we are already "so close" of this story to end 😭 ... yeah it still might take a couple more years to finish, but Oda is already in the ENDGAME of this story 🥹🥲 Personally the first time i got this feeling was back on Zou when we discover how to reach Laught tale ... then the 2nd time was we getting all younko but also Rogers bounty, and this was the 3rd and the one that hit the hardest 🙃

Azael Santacruz

And he absolutely smashed it, because we still have absolutely no idea!

Y0m0three

Oh and last comment of the day 😂 about Raftel being renamed into "Laugh tale" ... in japanese language "L's" are pronunced as "R's" ... that why if you pay attention you could notice Nami calls "Luffy" and it sound like "Ruffy" sometimes ... looks like Oda took advantage of this japanease lenguage phonetics thingy ...and used it into his advantage to trick all of us since the beggining!!!! so we thought the name of the island was always "Raftale" and not "Laugh tale" ... so there's obviously some hidden meaning there to!!!

Azael Santacruz

Raftel was just an early mistranslation before anyone knew what the true name of the island meant. Also, Jack, you're not alone, bud. This stretch of 5-6 episodes covering the Roger flashback hit me pretty much the same way. I can remember various points in One Piece where how I felt about the show stepped up a notch. The moment when Zoro lectured Luffy about not letting Usopp rejoin the crew without a sincere apology was the moment I really felt like I could say I love the show. Marineford really cemented the series as a modern epic for me. These Roger flashbacks punched me in the emotional gut so hard, and put the show at a point for me where I just have to tell people that it's hard to explain why the emotional payoffs hit so hard if you haven't gone on the thousand episode/chapter journey yourself.

JStymie

And about Buggy and Shanks, this is finally us getting the confirmation that they did not went into "Laugh tale" ... but they both were still there, where the crew was pin pointing the cordenates on the map ... soo maybe they could know where it is or how to go there... but are choosing not to go for some reason? 🤔

Azael Santacruz

Another important piece of information that i dont know if you missed or just forgot to comment after being overloaded with such a master piece but... Back on Roger's time the 4 Road phoneglyps where: - 1 in Wano - Big Mom had one already back since then - 1 in Zou - 1 on Fisham Island On present time 3 of them are still on the same place, but remember in Zou, Neko and Inu said the 4th one got lost and nobody knows where it is... its the one that was on Fishmen Island ... when Robin read Joyboy's apology letter, that was the only one there ... where did the Road Phonegly went? D: More logical thing to bealive is someone move it away, but when, why, who, and where did it put it on presen time? D: 😭 Also fun fact! The last Road Phonelgyp Roger read was the one in ZOU wich hapens to be the 1st one that Luffy read 😃

Azael Santacruz

Ever since you started OP I’ve been waiting for these episodes. Around 2 years and we’re finally here. Can’t wait for the rest of peak piece that’s around the corner

Luis Cardona

The North Pole South Pole Shanks and Buggy arguement is the one shown back in Orange town Buggy's flashback. You also see Rayleigh's REALLY early design when he stops them 😅 the tie in is crazy

Happy

This backstory catched all of us unprepared when it came out on the manga... it was THE PEAK that most people forgot or didn't wanted to go back to wano present time ... we just wanted to keep knowing more about Rogers journey 😭 Also that panel, is probably considered the best in all of one piece since it came out, and it was even made by the OP community into the reddit /rplace pixel wars event... and noboy deared to try to mess with it 🥹❤️ Also Oda stated he had to be VERY VERY careful when deciding how much to put in this, because he was afraid or "accidentally revealing" what the actual One Piece is 😳😨
