I know I'm really late to the party but the discussion between Canute and Willibad about love versus discrimination is really about unconditional love, which is what God asks of humans but they are incapable of. They discuss how original sin prevents humans from doing any more than discriminating (positively) against the people we are close to, but we are asked to "love thy neighbor" and extend that to all people. That is the love we are meant to strive for but are incapable of embodying in life, only after death can we achieve it. Canute's resolution comes from the paradox of this test God places on the people of earth.
