Night Scepter

Staff (Arcane Focus), Legendary (Vestige of Divergence), Requires Attunement

“This staff is a symbol of the pact between the Brumal Queen and her mortal knight, its presence striking both fear and respect from anyone of fey heritage or with knowledge of the fey courts.

The Night Scepter exudes both the harshness and beauty of Winter. The frozen wood of the staff radiates a chilling cold, though if its wielder is aware of this, they don’t seem affected. Other creatures however, feel winter’s bite all the more keenly when around it. The twisting white holly and ice atop the staff leave fine snowflakes and frozen holly leaves in its wake. 

DORMANT

This staff can be wielded as a Quarterstaff, using your Spell Attack Bonus. While wielding this weapon, you gain a +1 to your Spell Attack Bonus and Spell Save DC, and may use it as a magical focus. 

As an Action, you may cast the Ray of Frost cantrip through the staff. This cantrip scales with your level and uses Dexterity or your Spellcasting ability when determining the Spell Attack modifier. 

AWAKENED

Your Spell Attack Bonus and Spell Save DC bonuses increase to +2. 

Upon reaching its Awakened state, you may now cast the Ray of Frost cantrip as a Bonus Action through the staff. Additionally, a creature hit by your Ray of Frost now has its speed reduced by 15 ft. 

At the start of your turn, you gain 10 temporary hit points as a thin armor of ice covers your body. If these temporary hit points are reduced to 0, shards of the ice explode off of your body, causing each creature within 5ft. of you to make a DC18 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the creatures take 1d10 Piercing damage and 2d6 Cold damage. On a success, the creatures take no Piercing damage and only half Cold damage. 

EXALTED

Your Spell Attack Bonus and Spell Save DC bonuses increase to +3. 

Upon reaching its Exalted state, you may now create a number of rays equal to half your Proficiency modifier (rounded down) when casting the Ray of Frost cantrip. When doing so, the damage of the cantrip is halved. Additionally, creatures hit by your Ray of Frost now have their speed reduced by 20 ft. 

As a Magic Action, you unleash a blast of magical snow and frigid air in a 30 ft. Radius around you. All creatures in the area that you choose take 8d6 Cold damage and must make a DC18 Constitution saving throw. On a failed saving throw, the creature is Paralyzed, by the freezing cold. At the end of the creature’s turn, they may repeat the Saving Throw to end the Paralyzed condition. If a creature Paralyzed by this ability takes Fire damage, the condition immediately ends.
